Knots Landing
I figured they would have more to do later on when they're older. I know the actor who played Eric tragically died during the show's run, but Michael became a main character for a few seasons. I'll definitely look out for more of them. I did already know that Olivia would have more to do, too, and yes - I already see how important she is to Abby (and that bond plays a part in Abby's role in the Val's babies story). The season six finale just started and oh my GOD lol I feel silly because I know everyone here has been watching this and discussing it for decades, but as someone seeing it for the first time, I am hookedddddd. So here's a question. I notice that there are not a lot of exterior scenes at the cul-de-sac. Was it a Dallas-type situation where they only went to Granada Hills at the beginning of each season, or was it a thing where as the focus shifted to the characters' lives outside of home, they just showed the actual cul-de-sac less and less?

Knots Landing
Well, for starters, I don't think I've watched anything else since I first turned it on yesterday lol It took no time at all for me to get deep into the story and characters. I mean, I've already known the main gist of everything for years and years (and have the first two seasons on DVD), but to watch full episodes has been a whole new experience. To me, the mark of a good TV show is whether or not it creates a world I want to wrap myself up in, and that's exactly what Knots has been for me so far. I'm learning that the big four primetime soaps really were unique in their own ways. I expected Knots to be more akin to Dallas (and maybe it is - we're in S6 of Knots, and I haven't gotten to the same point with Dallas yet), but it is much more dramatic, the emotions are heightened, and the characters just feel things a lot more than their Texas counterparts do. The music is also incredible at establishing the mood (something I already noticed from watching clips). I can't imagine the sense of tension people felt when they watched each week back in the day. The storyline for season 6 is plotted so tightly, just when you think one thing has nothing to do with another, they collide, and then there's no way you can stop watching until you see how it plays out. It helps the characters because you get the feeling that every single one of them has a real purpose, even Karen's sons, who I always figured were glorified extras who popped in for a "Hi, mom/bye, mom" every now and then. Those guys who did scenes from the show in drag really hit the mark with voices and mannerisms I really do need for it to be available on demand though because I've been enjoying this season so much, and I hate the idea of going to work each day this week and jumping ahead.

Knots Landing
Well, after 20+ years of being extremely interested in watching this show from beginning to end, I am *finally* in a position to at least watch it regularly. I didn’t realize the steaming channel would be available through Amazon, but here I am enjoying it on a Saturday afternoon. Can’t wait for it to be available on demand - and it better be available long enough to actually watch the whole series at a comfortable pace!

I’m kinda surprised it took me two days to read about his passing. I figured it would have been covered in a much more widespread way, but alas. Of the classic 70s hosts, we still have Martindale, Eubanks, and Chuck Woolery. Eubanks goes back farthest as Newlywed made its debut in 1966.

Tank Jobs and Sabotage
I think the thing with K&A is that it was a family sitcom that wasn't a family sitcom. It was about the two ladies, and the kids were always supporting characters and never leads. Even the kids problems were explored from the moms' perspectives. That definitely made it a unique show for the time, and I'm glad it ended up having a nice, healthy run, but with limited appeal to the teen/kid audience, it's no surprise that it rarely popped up in reruns.

A live action show in that 7:30ET slot on Sundays is just so old-fashioned, imo, even twenty years ago. I love the idea of a family-oriented sitcom focused on the kids doing well there, but it's really just a time for football, 60 Minutes, and adult cartoons.

Alan linked the video, which I hadn’t seen before, and she does seem to not be well in it. Gillian was a major player when I first stumbled across AMC in summer 2001, and I remember loving her with Ryan when he was still a regular character who existed within the ensemble. I’m so glad she was able to make one last appearance before the ABC finale. She was low-key one of AMC’s funniest characters, too. This is hilarious.

When you think about how geographically different in every single way these two shows are from one another yet they are both 100% on the Bob brand, it tells you everything you need to know about the man's status as a TV icon.

This is a neat thread, can't believe I'm only just seeing it. I don't have much to add, except To me, Gunsmoke is the poster child for this. It was a huge hit in its first decade on Saturdays at 10pm ET but started to slide rather quickly in the mid-1960s. As the story goes, CBS was ready to cancel it in 1967, but it was the Paleys' favorite show, so at the last minute, the decision was made to try it out on Mondays at 7:30pm ET, sending Gilligan's Island to its cancellation. The new timeslot, along with stories that were much lighter than what had originally made the show a success (for better or for worse, according to who you talk to), shot Gunsmoke up from #34 in 1966-1967 to #4 in 1967-1968. It stayed in the top 10 for most of the rest of its run and never left the top 30 again - though the average age of its audience had to be about 60 years old. CBS could have moved Gilligan to another night/time, but it had already suffered from being in a new timeslot for each of its three seasons.

Judith had to be considered a draw for the show on the strength of her time as Lenore on AW/SOM. Not long after she joined the cast in 1971, she was in a promo encouraging viewers to tune in for her "new part." I wish they hadn't killed Anne off. I can understand wanting to show that they were expanding the show and setting the Cortlandts down as the new "money" family, but honestly, how much character space did the Cortlandts take up? For a while, it really was just Palmer, Nina, Cliff, and Daisy. I think ultimately Anne suffered from not having much of a place anymore. Myrtle was running the Boutique, Brooke had taken her place as Phoebe's exasperated relation, Nick Davis was gone for good (besides short-term returns), etc. Having her and Paul ride off into the sunset together at around the same time Linc and Kelly did would have been a nice happy ending for the Tylers who kept the PV pot boiling for the show's first decade. The Cortlandts coming in as a second wealthy family really changed the tenor of Phoebe's character. Instead of being on a pedestal all by herself and looking down on basically the entirety of the rest of the cast, she was in a position to want to constantly want to impress Palmer.

Man, man, man. Bob was one of the greatest TV stars of all time, and his 70s sitcom is one of the best of that decade. It's heartbreaking to be losing all of these legends one by one.

Falcon Crest
So, for the first time ever, I'm going into FC in earnest with a watch from the beginning until as far as I can get (which I was hoping would be the whole series until Freevee took it off). I think I have access to at least the first three seasons. I'm going to have annoying questions/comments, so get ready 🥰 - Please tell me that them casually referring to Angela as "Angie" is just one of those things that only lasts through the first season and is never done ever again because it just seems so wrong! - Lorenzo Lamas was hot from episode 1. He and Jane definitely had the chemistry as scheming grandmother with her apprentice grandson learning her ways. - I forgot that the Giobertis were supposed to be a NYC family transplanted into NorCal, but the only one who gives off New Yorker vibes is Vickie. Cole absolutely looks, sounds, and acts like he's from rural America. Chase and Maggie give Midwest. - I'm actually liking the more self-contained early episodes, but I wonder how they really marketed the show at the time. DALLAS was full-on soap by this time, so I'm impressed by the fact that they didn't rush FC into serialized mode and took time to develop the characters and relationships slowly. The continuing plot of Angela wanting Chase gone and the threat of the Giobertis finding out what really happened to Jason is good, though, and it frames everything else well.

This is my favorite scene in the history of 90210, it's just perfect, delicious teen soap, from Brandon's knowing but slightly confused look to Brenda's lone wolf strut away from the foolery. I still know the dialogue by heart. "Why are you doing this to me!?" "Because we owe it to you, Bren." #ouch "Look, I hate you both. Never talk to me again!"- Melrose Place reboot in the works
I think most people go into rewatch podcasts not looking for juicy gossip but just for the enjoyment of listening to cast members enthusiastically discuss their shows on mostly their own terms, with some fun tidbits along the way. I've been listening to Kristin Cavallari and Stephen Colletti's Laguna Beach podcast, and it's light and fun. I saw a clip of an interview with Daphne, Laura, and Courtney, and they all seem to be taking this whole thing for the fun blast from the past that it is. The 2009 series wasn't that at all, you can tell that there's a lot less pressure this time around.- RIP: In Memoriam Thread
Man, what a legend. I don’t think anyone could have ever imagined her becoming a face of cancer in just her mid-40s and being gone not even ten years later. As young as she was, it’s amazing how huge and varied her body of work is. I think her passing is felt by almost every corner of the entertainment business.- Classic Cooking Shows
Yasssss, I love a good cooking show! There's something just engrossing about watching the slow and meticulous process of cooking/baking as a bunch of ingredients turn into a complete meal, and there really are no special effects needed. I was a daily viewer during the "food p0rn" era of Ina Garten, Giada de Laurentiis, Michael Chiarello, etc. because the focus was still on the cooking and presentation, but I really can't watch too much of the over-the-top competition shows. I've become a big Julia fan via her Pluto TV channel. The color French Chef is my favorite, but I do enjoy watching her aggravate the fck out of Jacques Pepin: I've never seen or heard of this one, but it definitely looks like it's worth checking out.- RIP: In Memoriam Thread
Woah, that’s a big one. I’m so glad she was able to regain a ton of her dignity in the last couple of years.- RIP: In Memoriam Thread
'ALF' Child Star Benji Gregory Dies at 46 Very sad and unexpected. I was obsessed with ALF reruns for a hot minute when I was maybe 11 or 12, and to this day, I can't hear that theme song without feeling a little pang of memory. It's so heartbreaking to see that child stars are still not okay.- All My Children Tribute Thread

Any time the Brit soaps bring characters back after 10, 20, or 30 (or even 40, hey Corrie) years, it reeks of desperation. They get that buzz for a month or two, then it's back to struggling to accept that they're way past their prime. Sad. - RIP: In Memoriam Thread
