Things Josh Griffith did that we actually LIKED

I thought since we have a thread dedicated to all the awful writing from Josh Griffith over the years (and the laundry list is long). I figured I would make a thread where we can discuss some of the things we may have liked or appreciated that he did. I am not expecting a lot of positive feedback but I am curious because I do have a FEW things I have enjoyed.

Mark Grossman as Adam Newman - this felt like a good fit for a recast of Adam. The writing still leaves a lot to be desired though because that dark side of Adam is rarely seen these days, but I feel that Mark Grossman is absolutely capable of showing it if someone writes it and brings that side back out. The casting was good though so I will credit him for that.

Bringing back Diane - it’s been great having Susan Walter’s back as Diane and I’m sure most of you would agree. I hope she’s not gonna be on the chopping block with the new writers. The Emmy she won last year was much deserved. (Another character that has lost her edge though, and I hope we see that come back.)

The Sharon and Phyllis friendship - I like this new development with their characters. People evolve in real life and soaps should reflect that as well. I don’t see them being the next Kay and Jill necessarily but some variation of that maybe? It was time for them to move on anyways so we can focus on newer rivalries (which should already have) or begin to be established. Claire vs Audra is not cutting it for me, sorry.

Traci being back on a more consistent basis - no idea if this was JG’s choice or the actress to have a more prominent role on the show so I’m unsure if this is credit to him or not. Either way it’s been nice to have her around more. Now we just need Ashley back as well.

Unfortunately for every positive Josh managed to turn it into a negative. Cole and Heather were needlessly killed off and Mamie was written poorly and then just vanished.

The only three I can think of are: Audra - the best new character in quite a while with a capable actress, but I feel like they dropped the ball to really have her be the new vixen on the show Susan

I do love Susan Walters so I would have to agree having Diane back has been a net benefit.

I love Susan Walters, too - ever since LOVING, in fact - but I'm just so tired of the back-from-the-dead trope. I think Y&R would've been better off bringing her in as a Diane lookalike (erasing Maura West's run from history, lol).

  2. Susan Walters as Diane. I was skeptical at first, but she really did a homerun. I want Diane to get a little messy again though.

  3. More Traci. She could be on every day for me though. She could easily be the heart of the show if they let her...that one good, morally center character that guides others.

The ridiculous back from the dead story used to resurrect Diane was a Josh blunder. A lookalike or long lost twin was barely more acceptable but they'd just done that with Hilary/Amanda.

I agree that Audra has a lot of potential but she's already been given so many backstories-Tucker, Holden, Noah .

The character needs to be defined better.

Bringing in Allie was a good move on a number of levels, but Josh wrecked it by making the character bland and dropping her too soon. But at least she's out there and able to return.

Putting Devon/Abby on recurring.

Despite my opposite post of pictures of his worst moments Things he did I thought were good:

-Mark Grossman as Adam

-Writing out Daniel Goddard’s Cane

-Bringing back Diane from the dead

-Alison Lanier as Summer and completely overhauling and revitalizing that character so much to the point she went from forgettable and annoying under HK to being one of my favorites under AL.

-Without a doubt, Audra Charles. Let’s not forget how much I also enjoyed her forerunner, Imani.

-Bringing back characters like Mamie, Cole, Heather etc for extended gigs I didn’t think we’d ever see or hear from again.

-Actually, for the most part I THOUGHT March 2022-Spring 2023 was overall decent and at least watchable until JG entered some major depression or something.

-Bringing on Holden and Damian.

Unfortunately for whatever ridiculous reasons he absolutely SQUANDERED almost of all his good work in the past year. Hope he thought it was worth it now that he has been fired again.

I should have mentioned Audra in my original post as well because I do actually love this actress and the potential she holds. JG just really didn’t know how to write for her 🙄. There’s so many examples of this with all his characters across the board. Just bland and lacking and distinctive qualities/personality..

And the saddling Billy Flynn with that part.

Yep. That’s why I had to add the squander part. I really don’t why he systematically destroyed any good he ever did other than he’s a constant self saboteur with psychological issues.

Look how his 2013 run started to get a strong groove on before he self imploded, ruined his own storylines and JFP fired him.

Despite seeing people online since the 90’s singing his praises, after seeing his early Sunset Beach work, ATWT work, three tenures as HW at Y&R, and one very, very disastrous tenure at Days, I personally think Griffith has been a massive hack all along and faked any of his acclaimed work.
