I gasped so loud when I saw this on Instagram. He was THE soap hero. So soon after Tristan Rogers, not to mention Leslie, Jackie, Denise, and all of the other GH stars we’ve lost. Plus, Drake Hogestyn, who was somewhat in his mold.

I'm absolutely devastated by this news...but I also have mixed feelings about it, too.

On the one hand, there's no denying the impact Luke and Laura have had - not just on GH, but on the industry as well. But, on the other hand, it's because of Luke and Laura, and the other shows' obsessive need to copycat that success, that the industry eventually collapsed under the weight of its' own '80's excesses; de-emphasizing and tossing out much of what made soaps so special to so many people - believable storylines, multigenerational casts, etc. - in order to capture a different kind of audience that was ever younger and ultimately proved to be so damn fickle.

Moreover, to say that TG and the majority of GH fans (along with Claire Labine and Wendy Riche) never exactly saw eye-to-eye on who and what Luke Spencer was would be an understatement, because the sociopath that was Luke in his final years in Port Charles...? That's not the Luke we fell in love with back in '79. Not by a longshot. And it's TG and his need to not feel bored or that he wasted his career and talents on a lowly soap opera that were responsible for turning Luke into a creature that hardly anyone recognized anymore and whom I, for one, was not sorry to see gone.

Regardless, though, my heart does go out to TG's former colleagues and loved ones. RIP.

RIP, Tony! You will be missed!

I know he wasn't exactly a young man and there were rumors his health wasn't great, but I am always shocked when a tv legend dies. They always seemed so larger than life on tv and you think they will live forever. Especially an icon like Tony.

This weekend has been utterly devastating. Anthony Geary too?! He was one of the last icons who just drew you to his character through sheer force of talent and aura.

I haven't cared much about the current state of daytime, watching more YouTube clips and I found myself binging the 1996- 1999 Cassadine/Spencer war. Geary earned and every last one of those Emmys. He just brought Luke Spencer to life. RIP to a legend.

I never cared much for the character of Luke Spencer but I certainly recognized Geary's skill and dedication, and his uncanny ability to stay front and center in story long after other GH vets had been swept by the wayside. He was indeed a legend of the genre.

I have vague memories of him on Bright Promise, where, IIRC, he played a very different role than Luke.

RIP and condolences to his family, friends and fans.

That was a lovely statement.

I am under no illusion that Tony and Genie were ever bff, but I does make me a little sad they hadn't spoken in years.

Wow, I'm shocked. This has been a rough year for soaps. Two of the most iconic daytime stars of all time, Eileen Fulton and Anthony Geary, gone in the same year.

That statement from Genie Francis was beautiful.
