There’s nothing fun about Lulu having to watch protect her kids from the literal supervillains who violated her while she’s painted as the difficult one. It’s crazy that they have her in the same STUPID story with both her children.

I actually like her as Carly 2.0 because she really does feel like she’d be the daughter of Laura Wright’s version of Carly, but not Sarah or Tamaras. Eden and Laura actually feel like daughter and mother to me when they’re in scenes together. The WSB thing is just the silly stuff I expect from soaps now. And I’m actually excited to see what Jason does with this knowledge and already disliking Brennan.  I can’t imagine he has more loyalty to Joss than Carly but we’ll see.

Drew realizing he couldn’t tell them he had blackmail material in his safe actually made me chuckle.

Since I only started re-watching GH during the pandemic (last day I watched before that was the day Alexandra Quatermaine arrived. I think that was 1979 or 1980) I was Team Nina, so I am biased. I am not a fan of Carly's.

Yes, that was hysterical. Wait until Drew finds out he has no leverage over Portia. And, I lived when Portia told Drew he was stuck with her as his doctor.

Oh trust me I am no fan of Carly. Once LW took over the only time I liked her was with Jax. Carly is an obnoxious, loud, hypocritical, shrew. I figured with how much Carly was in Joss’ life as opposed to Jax, it made sense she’d be her mini her.

I honestly wish Joss would take a long trip to visit her father lol.

LW's Carly is basically an iteration of Carly I have just come to accept.  I am no Carly fan either and I can't ever see SJB playing this version of Carly, but LW does seem to give it her all.

We’re in total agreement. She’s been there the majority of my GH watching and even though she’s nothing like Tamara, who was my Carly, she does not phone it in a single day. No one could ever say Laura phones it in whether that makes her portrayal good or bad, YMMV 😂

Tamara is my favorite Carly too!  Although I appreciate SJB.  I will say Laura Wright always entertains me regardless of what I think about her portrayal, which makes her a step above 70% of the cast. 😂  I think she's made Carly her own using her personal strengths and talents whether it's the right fit for the character or not.  I would never have taken Carly in that direction though.

I agree. And what makes it sad is that when these writers have written Carly in character (I still lived for Carly in charge of the mob temporarily during Nixon Falls), LW BROUGHT IT. She always does, but that period made me stand up and take notice cuz while yes, Carly would wait for Jason to save her...when that fails...and she's in a corner...Carly can and will come out swinging. And LW (in that white power suit) had that in spades.

Yeah, I lost interest after Luke and Laura stopped running from Mr. Smith. It's funny because GH became extraordinarily popular after that. I was in high school at the time and everyone loved GH. I went against the grain because I thought Guiding Light was way better.

I think I'm holding on to my silly grudge against Laura Wright. I hated that she left Guiding Light for GH. As we all can see, the move really worked out for her. 🙂

For me, SJB’s Carly was the first character since Judith Light’s Karen Wolek where you could see a crushing amount of low self esteem was baked into the DNA of the character, and she never fully dealt with it. She was impulsive and manipulative, self destructive, and also a walking wound of hurt. Judith Light got to fully explore that in her character, and Sarah wasn’t as lucky all the time due to the show focusing her more on the men she was after and Michael. But she always played it. They both showed a raw, frayed edge in their performances.

Laura Wright is a pro that has had to carry a lot of her scene partners and try to make a lot of crap work. I don’t fault LW. The character is just not the same Carly.

I think it's more that the character evolved, and then the writing degraded.

For over 20 years now Carly has had money, power and social status. She has raised several children. She is a pillar of the community and a known mob wife. All of this was either already true or made true of Laura's Carly not long after she took over. I can easily buy into Carly, any Carly, becoming nouveau riche and having this power and economic base after so many years. We saw the beginnings of this with Sarah's Carly after she married Sonny and became ride or die for him. She began throwing her weight around there. That was the start.

What has changed in the last 15 years (or more) is the approach to Carly. Yes, Laura's Carly was different from Tamara's who was different from Sarah's, but the harder edge is something LW initially brought back to the character when Carly got bent on revenge against, say, Dante and Lulu or Brenda. Laura could go at them hard in a way Tamara couldn't do the same way, but Sarah could've. This changed when the Guza II team left. While Carly had become somewhat 'respectable' in town by then, while she was sometimes more of a domesticated B-player with Jax, when crossed she could still turn rabid.

What we've seen since the early 2010s, with most of that writing team gone other than Korte and I think the occasional staffer, is a gradual softening of Carly into more of a flatter 'feisty heroine' role, where she is all things to all people, earth mother of Port Charles, etc. Few people are allowed to still be on bad terms with her, even those with longstanding bitter relationships with Carly. That all IMO goes back to FV and Korte preferring Carly be this way, because they feel the audience roots for Carly and Carly has inherited the role of a Bobbie or Laura as a nascent matriarch. Making her still make truly dark or bad decisions would interfere with that audience identification, alienate the audience they prefer to cultivate and go against their own personal preferences.

LW plays this stuff well enough because she played Cassie Winslow or Ally on GL and LOV/TC, who all had elements of the original Carly but were softer characters - like this Carly today. But Laura Wright can do more as Carly and is capable of doing more. She's shown it many times. I think she's often been very good in the role, but I think it's the writing that has failed her in the recent decade.

If it was down to me I'd still bring Sarah back tomorrow. But if it had to be Laura's Carly she can absolutely play more IMO.

Yes, Guza and that team still kept the thread that has been lost. Their Carly could still be a dangerous element because she inserted herself into situations and also made impulsive decisions. LW still played the threads of jealousy for Jason with Sam and Elizabeth, and to a lesser degree at that time, Robin. I just see it more as she was morphed into a new character to, not evolved into one.

What a waste to have Drew wake up this early!

Not at all which is why I enjoy those moments where the character beats/moves that feel like something SJB or TB would do pop up in current GH. Which is why I mentioned the mob meeting. They had Carly being all woe is me...and even I know of TB's Carly headlining a meeting (even though I was not a regular viewer then) so I was like 'what's this mess?' So props where it's due, she walked in and wiped that smug look right off Cyrus's face. And the following week was perfection and oh so Carly. It was brief, but I ate it up.
