Ha! Turning to other Leslie projects from this era, maybe one of the retro-rare-obscure YouTube channels will turn up either of her failed sitcom pilots.

Another April, for CBS from 1974, where she was a divorced liberal mother moving back in with conservative parents Barnard Hughes and Elizabeth Wilson. Featuring a pre-fame Howard Hesseman.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, for ABC in 1975, in the Katharine Houghton role. Bill Overton played Sidney Poitier's role, followed by Richard Dysart and Eleanor Powell in the Tracy & Hepburn roles, Madge Sinclair & Lee Weaver in Beah Richards and Roy Glenn's roles, and Rosetta LeNoire in Isabel Sanford's role.

Interesting how Barnard Hughes and Elizabeth Wilson played LC's parents in the first pilot.  A year later, I think, the two would co-star - again, as husband and wife - in "Doc," also on CBS.

I initially thought Barnard and Elizabeth acted together in Neil Simon's The Good Doctor, but that was Frances Sternhagen.

ETA: I wrote too soon. Barnard and Elizabeth acted together in Sheep on the RunwayUncle Vanya, and decades later in Waiting in the Wings.

This is hard to read.

As some know, I have been making my way through early 1990s "General Hospital" and am up to mid 1993. Riche is a gift to so many of the GH legends, particularly the women like Leslie Charleson. Monica is a fully developed character who is a brilliant surgeon, a mother who never feels she is doing enough, a wife who loves her husband but doesn't always like him, and a friend to her colleagues like Bobbie Jones. And Leslie plays each layer of the character with a quiet strength that makes you feel each individual slight from Alan and her boys AJ and Jason. Her rapport with Stuart Damon is remarkable as well as her ability to go toe to toe with Jane Elliot's Tracy. In the pre-Labine Riche era, Tracy and Monica are still at odds, but come together at times to support one another. In the GH thread, there is talk of Tracy's 1993 goobye, but one scene that isn't included in the video is from an episode or two earlier where Tracy and Monica have their last scene together and Monica is very optimistic and encouraging Tracy to not count herself out. It's a really tender moment for a prickly relationship.

In Charleson's honor, I watched all the clips of the David Langton trial from about May 30, 1992-June 15, 1992. Charleson is great, per usual. I didn't realize that they hadn't dropped the bomb that David was Dawn's father to the boys by this point and the courtroom revelation shocks Jason to his core cause a deep rift in his relationship with Monica. It's a heartbreaking ripple of this trial. Additionally, another courtroom bombshell from Monica's diary reveals that David made Monica feel a way no other man, including Alan, ever had. This leads to a bitter confrontation in the manse between Alan and Monica where Alan's pride gets the best of him and Monica remains humble, but never the victim.

I am sorry Charleson never got to appear under Mulcahey this last year. I hope her farewell episode is as memorable as Bobbie's.

She was so comfortable with Riche that she pitched the idea of Monica having breast cancer, and Riche and Labine loved the idea and they all told the story beautifully. That scene with Monica and Alan where she shows her scars to him and asks if he still wants to sleep with her and he says he would love to was so poignant and memorable. Stuart Damon also got to do wonderful work in that story.

Within the text is a Leslie quote:

In 1994, Leslie reflected on the progress of TV over the years.

"When I first started on soaps -- ages ago -- we were restricted. You couldn't say words like 'abortion'. You couldn't be political. You couldn't be topical. You couldn't cause any kind of controversy. I always thought that was a mistake. We're seen in people's living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms, five days a week. We have a responsibility to tackle real issues."

Now, put that together with the circumstances of LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING.

Life, soaps, history, CBS, Irna Phillips ...

Cause of death

Update (2/13): The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has reported the cause of death as sequelae (or, the longterm impact) of blunt head trauma. The report also notes that Charleson lived with asthma, arthritis, atrial fibrillation and normal pressure hydrocephalus (in which excess cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the ventricles).

    • Yes, they did.  I still have them.  I think there were three.  AMC and GH as well.
    • Ah okay, thats what I thought. I was hoping I missed the announcement somewhere. Thanks for the clarification.
    • A new day in Salem… and a new day for Days.  I like the way everybody found out and absorbed the news about John’s death, and how they all eventually found their way to Marlena’s to offer their condolences. I’m not particularly sure why they waited until the next day to tell everybody but I don’t really mind it.  We finally got Roman’s perspective! His scenes with Kayla were one of the best parts of today. I’m glad that Roman is thankful for everything that John did for his kids. I agree with posters who said that he should’ve had a scene like this with John, but I’m happy we got this at least.  Julie was used very well today too. She’s definitely the best person for Marlena to have scenes with at the moment. Hopefully, Julie continues to be there for her. And yes, I totally agree with Marlena and Belle sending EJ away when he came to the apartment. I’m curious to see what’s going to happen to his and Belle’s relationship in the aftermath of all this. And, while I enjoyed most of Brady and Kristen’s scenes, I still think the ship has sailed for them. Hopefully, the aftermath of John’s death causes Brady to finally end this thing with her once and for all.  And, I see a lot of people were wearing some kind of shade of purple today.

    • Wow, I love that current and former actors are participating in this. I barely recognize Staci Greason! She looks fine, just very different. But I will be happy to hear anecdotes from her. I shipped RoJohn and Isabella hard back in the day, and I sobbed buckets in my dorm room at college when Izzy B passed. Honestly, I'm interested in everyone's stories. Drake seemed like he was well loved among the cast.
    • When she first appeared, I was sure she was setting Tyrell up for a prank. She was too much of a manic pixie dream girl- I wasn't surprised Tyrell also became suspicious. Now I'm not so sure. If Jessica genuinely likes Tyrell, it seems like a missed opportunity to not have started her out as a bully, then we see her gradually catch feelings for Tyrell.  The McBrides are definitely the "C" family of BTG. They always get last priority. There have been a few times where the Doug/Vanessa/Joey characters reference off screen conversations which seem too important to not show us. Like when Doug thanked Joey for giving him extra time to pay off the loan. When did that happen? Or when we abruptly moved from Vanessa/Joey at Uptown to Vanessa/Doug in the hotel room. The McBrides don't even have their own set - even though Vanessa is a realtor. It's a shame because I am a fan of the characters and actors.

I am also adjusting to KR as Ted but I feel that AM and MJ had way more chemistry as father and daughter than AM and KR. We saw Eva dream of having a real relationship with MJ's version of Ted for months so it's a bit of a bummer not to have that payoff with the original actor except for those scenes in MJ's last episode.  Something I noticed about Eva today is how she takes genuine delight in being a schemer. As badly as she wants to be a Richardson, she still has so much of her mom in her. It was jarring seeing her earnestly promise to steer clear of Leslie in her scene with Ted, then immediately switch attitudes when her mom showed up.  I'm very surprised with how quickly the accident story has been moving along. I was sure that it would be months if not years before people figured out it was Leslie on the motorcycle, not to mention responsible for the potassium overdose. I'm looking forward to seeing how MVJ and Guza avoid writing Leslie into a corner.  Finally, I have been loving the Articulettes story. Bonita Brisker was just the right amount of OTT - remember Sharon is supposed to be even more angry than Tracy is. If Sharon didn't come in swinging, people would say she fell flat. The way Sharon and Tracy describe the breakup is so Supremes-meet-Original Recipe Destiny's Child. I get the sense that MVJ is re-writing the Return to Love Tour as a roman a clef, and I love it. I'm looking forward to finding out what the secret they share is. If Dante Green is as shady as Berry Gordy was, it's something dark. If/when they go through with the reunion, I expect Dante to show up and claim to own the Articulettes trademark in a Lou Pearlman-esque twist.
    • Other than hanging out with Liz, all of Lucky's stories have been stalled out or dropped; the relationship with his son; his wanderlust. He hasn't been involved in any of the action/adventure or con artist stuff. I don't think he's even had a scene with Sidwell since the latter came to town. He's a real after thought. I doubt he's long for the show.
