With such a heavy heart, I can't really find the words today about the passing of this sweet, kind man. From the first day we met in the green room of Days of Our Lives in 1986, we were fast friends. Drake's love and devotion to his forever sweetheart Victoria, his children and grandchildren was one of his most endearing qualities. Such a good, honest man. We are all in shock of the news we received yesterday. @drakehogestyn you will remain in my heart always. Sending so much love to you.❤️#days

Both the Y&R and AMC Twitter accounts also posted condolences, which I think was a classy thing to do.

Tom/Alice to Doug/Julie.....John/Marlena were in line to be the next one.  :(

Still reeling from this to be honest.

I haven’t been this upset over soap death since Jeanne Cooper and Darlene Conley tbh.

This is the type of passing that rattles a show to its core especially how central John & Marlena have been for the last 38 years now on and off.

I think the AMC account is just a fan account (I may be wrong) but it's still nice.

It does rattle the show to its core.  It will be an entirely different Days once John is gone.  Hopefully the show can move on with Marlena as its matriarch much like Alice did after Tom's passing.

This is such a shocking loss. No matter how many times John and Marlena were written out or taking a break or whatever, you always knew they'd come back, and they always did come back, but now?

It reminds me of Jackie Zeman's passing. We just don't feel ready for this generation of soap legends to leave us. Yes, we've already mourned plenty of them over the years, but there are just some who seemed like they'd live forever. They were supposed to make it to Frances Reid/Helen Wagner/Ruth Warrick status. It's really a privilege to live in a time where 70 is seen as an early death.

Days has had so much loss in the last 30 years. An entire generation with the heads of all the main families (Macdonald Carey, Frances Reid, Joseph Mascolo, Frank Parker, Peggy McCay, John Aniston) and now losses in the subsequent generations (John Clarke, Bill Hayes, Drake Hogestyn).

I'd like to think that to Days fans there's some comfort in knowing they are all upstairs together and are sharing memories of their time working with each other.

For me, this is almost as hard as Jackie Zeman. I grew up watching these people, and in my mind they are vibrant and compelling. He may have been 70, which is still too young, and yet he is still John Black. The hero with a deep love of his family. Clearly what Drake brought to the table.

John Black had a million origin stories and identity crises but because of Drake, and the magnetic orbit of his entire onscreen (and offscreen) persona you always knew he knew where home was. That's what made him so wonderful and what also makes this so sad.
