DAYS: Fire Jamey Giddens!!

From what I've heard, the head writer creates the general outline for the storyline and how long it's going to be seen onscreen, and the breakdown writer adds in the filler to the story in order to stretch it out to that projected length.

I was saying that Days needed new breakdown writers even before Jamey showed up and now I think they need them now more than ever.

I always thought that Head Writers write the story in form of a prose. Breakdown writers then break that story into episodes, creating episode outlines. And then script writers take those outlines and turn them into dialogue/scripts.

This is why flashbacks would be helpful.  Even just to give us a hint of some context or interactions.  There have been none of Renee.  If the show can't afford flashbacks of PS or these actors then the story should have been scrapped.  Even the Possession story got a great deal of flashbacks to set it up and the devil possession is much more famous, more recent, and objectively much easier to understand.

The Renee story isn't very easy to understand and the show is using a few moments of exposition from a select group of characters to try to explain it.  And Jamey Giddens is filling in the gaps poorly on twitter.  I don't know the median age of Days viewers anymore, but I assume at least a good portion (like myself) weren't born when Renee was on the show.  I can't see them being able to understand it without having to look up the character on the internet.  I don't think a viewer should have to do homework to be able to enjoy a story.  Outside of it being awful, the name dropping (Don, Alex, David, etc) isn't very relevant and like you said a bunch of characters lost in time for the most part.

Renee died on screen in 1983, expecting the audience to know a character that has not been mentioned for nearly 40 years is a big ask. I was alive then, but my shows of choice were on PBS for kids. If Peacock would have classic Days to watch from that era would be different.

I mean, I've been a viewer of the show for 25 years - almost 30 if you take into account that 1993 episodes started airing here in 1997, and I literally have no idea who Renée is outside seeing a few clips on YouTube. It would definitively help to do flashbacks at least, if only so that viewers could enjoy high-quality clips of when the show had a budget. Now it's just random names; unless they're intending to re-cast Renée and bring her back from the dead (why?!), I don't see why we shouldn't at least be thrown some bones.

That would've been a great idea since Peacock seems to be floundering a bit - upload classic DAYS featuring Renée and the Salem Slasher on there while this storyline is running.

Even if they took a character that died years ago, it should have been someone that has strong connections to the current cast.   Someone like Samantha (could you imagine LG pretending to be DH's twin lol) or Isabella that are mentioned and are easily tied to the current canvas.  I am not advocating for those characters or anything, but it would have been much easier to use those characters across the show than Renee.  Who's even met Renee on the current show-Tony, Anna, Marlena, Julie, Doug, Roman, and Maggie?  Renee has no children, Tony and Stefano never mentioned her, her parents aren't alive, she has no connection with her siblings, and, frankly, no one seemed to miss her at all.  This has to be one of the most random characters to fake bring back ever on a soap and then she starts name dropping people that haven't been mentioned (outside David/Neil) for decades.  When's the last time someone mentioned Don?  The Reagan Administration?  Marlena doesn't even name drop Don lol.

. Giddens and DC really gave Nelson Branco’s ultra trashy Suds Reports a run for the money in 2008-2010 didn’t they? I had paid no attention to DC for years and ignored Giddens so of course here we are now with him actually attempting to write a soap.

That’s the thing: so many writers/journalists/critics who ostensibly cover the industry are secretly angling to worm their way in themselves. They’ll pull their punches on the people they want to work with eventually. Can’t burn those bridges with negative coverage.

Interesting, so I sort of had it right with the roles and responsibilities. Sort of. Despite one's writer position, it's still a group effort. Overall, it needs to be cohesive. I don't feel that whenever I watch the show in general.

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.
    • I'm glad a lot of people are continuing to enjoy this show.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.
