Bare Essence (1982-83)

I don't think so.  I don't think there was anything wrong with picking up where the original miniseries left off.  Again, I think the problem was that too many actors' roles had to be recast once it went to the series, and the replacements paled in comparison.  Frankly, they would have been better off leaving well enough alone.

Yeah, I mean most characters were designed with someone in mind then almost everyone was recast, let's Face It, it wasn't a question of lack on talent by anyone it was not being fit for the shoe you would fill, Jaime Lyn Bauer might've worked with time, Jennifer O'Neill too but she was too Young and Not The Least Similar to Genie to play her mother, Jessica Walter was tooooooooo young too etc.

@Joseph those screen caps are from the opening credits when the show went to series, or at least, the opening credits of the German dub found on YouTube. I’ve wondered if the Sarah Vaughan song by Billy Goldenberg from the miniseries was used for the series.

I’m not far into it, but I finally started the mini series and this is *so* good. I feel like I’m going to regret it because this will make me want to find the series even more.

It’s so odd seeing Linda Evans outside of the static acting and perfection of Krystle Carrington.

I ain't saying Linda Evans is a brilliant actress, but she was far more capable than the dross that they always wrote for her on DYNASTY.

As a miniseries, BE was pretty good, with good casting and a strong story.  It's just should have stayed as a miniseries, lol.

Linda Evan's had a character she could sink her teeth into.  A flawed character that had both positive and negative traits.

The story I was most liking was the 2 designers finding their way back to one another.  Mini series used to have fun b and c stories that interested me more than the A story.

Ah, yes.  Matt and Melody Phillips.  IIRC, too, Matt and Melody realized how much they still loved each other after she was beaten nearly to death by some dude she was seeing.

It's been SO long since I watched Bare Essence, but just the first five minutes took me right back to the first time I saw it! That sweeping arrangement of the theme as the camera chases up the beach...flawless. I'll definitely be sinking my teeth back into this again tomorrow as a nice post-holiday viewing.

I honestly forget that they made a series out of it lol obviously we all "want" to see it, but at the same time, I feel like there's no big huge loss in not seeing it. The mini is perfect all by itself.

I don't think she did.  But she should have!

I could see her coming aboard DYNASTY, for example, as some long-ago love of Blake's, with love child in tow.

The full series used to be on YouTube. I tried to follow along but lost patience as it was dubbed in German, which I do not speak. Jessica Walter appeared to be a fine replacement for Lee Grant, just wish I could have heard her. We all know she was Esther Shapiro’s choice for Alexis, and her Ava is certainly styled in the Alexis vein, often seen talking on her mod chrome and lucite sphere phone while smoking white 120’s.

I wouldn't say the BE miniseries was or is an example of GOOD writing, lol, but I do think it was overall more engrossing than what was coming from DYNASTY around that time.

NO, The Nearest she got was a TV Film/Miniseries called The Million Dollar Face from 1981 that sounded like a Pilot

Ha, i always pictured that secretary of Cecil's Being that LOL, i mean Cecil's ex with a love child by him who would eventually try to fight for a piece of the fortune

    • My comment has nothing to do with cast resentment, but does relate to the Finland location shoot: It may be a coincidence, but Jim Matthews died in Finland in 1982.  Hugh Marlowe's final episode was in April 1982, but the character probably didn't die untll May or June. (I'm unable to find the character's date of death, only the date of Marlowe's final episode). SInce Jim and Rachel had very little interaction after around 1975, it is unlikely Jim's death in Finland had any connection to Rachel's potential visit, but the choice to have Jim die in that location at that time is a head-scratcher.  I'm sure the writers sent Jim on an extended trip (and off-screen) because of Marlowe's illness.  But Finland seems like a strange choice considering the (then) recently cancelled location shoot.
    • I totally understand your sloths concern about it and I agree with you. Let’s hope the show plays it’s cards right.    Further comments about the last few episodes: - I liked that one of the attendees was filming the scene. That’s realistic. I wonder if the writers will follow up with that.  - Martin and Smitty trying to drag Leslie out was very heteronormative, so perfectly in line with them two as characters lol.    As for the future: it’s obvious the Duprees will come to accept Eva one way or another, but the rivalry with Kay should be here for the long term   On the topic of acting: the only bad actors I’m seeing are Ted and Derek. Tomas hasn’t proven to be either good or bad, so far, but he’s certainly mediocre and uncharismatic. He sucks the energy out of the scenes and I don’t see any couple of women ever vying for him.
    • I’m trying to think which actors VW were working with at the time, and none of them had been there for a while. Even like Mac and Ada didn’t have that big of a part in Rachel’s storyline.  And Jamie was involved with all that movie stuff.
    • Brooke did ads before ATWT too. That probably helped get her the job. After ATWT she seemed to branch more into hosting, along with ads.  I think I saw Kelley in an ad or two, but you're right she wasn't on as much.
    •   Thanks for sharing these. I wonder if Charles might have been in the running for Adam. I know Preacher was a bit of a bad boy at times on EON, but Neal seemed to be a step down, and Robert Lupone had played a similar part on AMC. Given the huge cast turnover at this point I wonder who thought they had been there long enough to go.  Laura Malone/Chris Rich would get a remote within the next year.
    • Interesting.  It seems to allude to that statement that Warren Burton made around that time about some AW actors getting special treatment.  I wonder who was resentful about not getting to go.
    • Good morning, boys!  I figured that it was time that our Gio was introduced into the hotness thread

    • Under all of Madonna's social media today there is this wave of negative, toxic, absurd comments by Lady Gaga fans telling her how Gaga surpassed her in concert in Copacabana. I mean... Who the hell cares? Why are these fan communities so freaking toxic??? I'm sure Madonna doesn't care... But still. Have some respect for M. Leave her social media alone. Go cheer Gaga and be happy. Why come and spew hate on M??? Crazy world.
    • FYI, again, Ruth/Letitia is not in either of these 2 episodes. So that concludes the 4 episodes I had from Nov. 1983. I don't have the October episodes.
    • Eddie has begun uploading the 1990 episodes. I'm so happy about that. I was mindfully taking a break till there's plenty of episodes I can binge watch when I feel like it. Now that 1989 is complete... I can't wait to press play on February 1989 and resume where I left off.
