I think it really is all in Missy's hands.  Corday sued her and brought her back.  I don't think the show will ever out right fire her or have they before?  I can't remember if she left back in the 2000's or if  they fired Missy and Matt.

From what I recall she chose to leave and was pretty frustrated at the time.  She and Matt finally had in-character writing with Beth Milstein as interim HW before Sheffer, but it was too little too late.  That was also the last time she had any spark as Jennifer IMO.

I understand people being conflicted about Missy. In her youth she had such a spark and spontaneity that took a long time to go away, even in the 2000s. But she's looked old and tired to me for many years, and the personal bled into the screen persona in a few ways long ago IMO. I feel for her strange situation with her husband, but she's also making her own choices (much like Banus or possibly another female lead at GH). I usually wouldn't get behind a foundational recast like this one, but Cady I felt did an excellent job in what should've been Mission: Impossible.

I doubt Corday would ever cut Missy loose for good, so I assume if this is true she will be the incumbent Jennifer going forward. But for my money it's a mistake and it should be Cady McClain, especially with DAYS potentially reinventing itself online. And if Missy refuses to be vaccinated, which will soon be the law of the land in many workplaces, she should be dismissed permanently.

There has always been an earnestness that Missy brought to Jen.  She is much less glamourous than Marlena or Hope but Missy has always had a natural appeal. There is something very likable about her, but her real life just isn't likable at all.  I just think MR has a warmth Cady does not have naturally.  Anyhow, if they said Cady was taking over the role forever I'd be fine.  I just still think Missy will always be Jen.   Plus, her great chemistry with MA.  You aren't gonna be able to just replicate that with someone else, but CM never bothered me even though MR has played Jen since she was practically a kid.  So it's kind of a wash?  I like them both as Jen.

Sums it up well for me.

Said it all. I agree.

I'd rather have Cady in the role but I'm not at all surprised Melissa is still hanging onto the role. It's going to be her call ultimately. I assume she tested the waters in this return.
