It was the revelation that Kirk was once married to Iva's biological cousin(or was it her bio sister?) and had simply abandoned her and and their two children together to go be with Adelaide Frtizgibbons, interestingly played by Beverly Penberthy of AW fame.

Katherine and Robert on GH as best love story is shocking to me.

Cricket as over exposed was so true.  Also love best enemies Jill and Nina.  It was a fantastic time for the show and I loved Nina back then.

I wonder about that too. That year was a transition period of the show. So many characters were written out between 1989-90. 1989 was also the first time AMC was written by someone other than Nixon or one of her protegees. Margaret DePriest appeared to arrive to help clean up the show and then she disappeared after 6 months or so. The show up to that point had around 8 major stories rolling along of various quality at the same time.

The Eric Kane clown story was a major miss that year too and David/Melanie was just boring. The "who fathered Dixie's baby?" on the other hand, was one of the greatest stories in the history of the show. Barr, McClain and Canary all won Emmys and submitted the same tape. I don't think that was ever done again.

Agreed. I'm up to August 1989 in my summary-reading and even the teased Monica and Ashton affair* sounded more interesting than Katherine and Robert.

*Tracy dispatched him to distract/manipulate her, and by extension, Alan.

It was so wrong yet so right to root for Roger and Holly. Even though they weren't together, there were always signs of something brewing between them. They really were the anti-supercouple.

Sally's arrival was the turning point for B&B. There was nobody else like her on daytime. She breathed new life into that show.

Oh hells yes this got called out. Cricket really ate Y&R in the late 1980s. When I've watched late 1980s Y&R episodes online, I skip all the Cricket scenes

I'm planning to do the same when the 1987 episode airs Tuesday.

Nina vs Jill was supreme.

Josh and Reva had a great wedding.

GL fired on all cylinders in 1989..and I agree with @BetterForgotten..Calhoun helped focus Long.  Sometimes you can be too creative and need someone to structure you.

I was surprised at 1989 being best show..but I do think Depriest helped refocus the show..and she did create Tad/Dixie...start Erica and Jack.. etc.

    • I'm all for it. Get them Nina!
    • I am blown away that Christie Clark is 51, and she debuted 39 years ago. They gave her a lovely script today.  But, I could not think of any other examples in culture of someone able to jump right back into the skin of a character, after virtually retiring from acting years ago. I was trying to recall if Carrie left for a bit with Anna after Roman died (because she wasn't at Bo & Hope's wedding), and then returned as a pre-teen Christie?  Or if she was just SORASed off-screen?  But, whenever I see the character I am reminded how much more trauma she's endured than Sami, and yet she remains such a nice person.
    • Weirdly I feel like Nina was the most sus about the entire situation.  Normally I would have given this one to Carly, but Nina was always kind of trying to make it make sense. I think Nina (and Alexis) are actually really smart characters.  They just constantly get in their own way with dumb plans lol.
    • Rewatching some of 1991 I had to appreciate what a strong week March 5-12 1991 was. Cassandra dies, Nina shoots David, Sheila switces the babies, and drunk Nikki all occurring simultaneously. 1991 and 92 were pretty strong overall.
    • Still loving all the Gio fallout, but the scenes that really surprised me this episode were the ones with Nina and Maxie. I was not expecting Nina to be the one to put together all the pieces about Sasha's baby daddy. This custody hearing is about to get explosive!
    • I really hope after the secret comes out their interactions don't stop
    • BAHAHA  I needed that laugh today. Talk about one note.  I would put Derek and Ashley a notch above Dani. Dani's scenes are basically rinse, lather, and repeat for 60 episodes and counting.  It's as if she was transported from the soap opera Passions onto this soap.  MVJ should put aside her friendship/admiration for Karla and look at the fact that this character isn't wroking as written.
    • Agreed.  It doesn't feel in character at all.
    • You could always tell whenever Douglas Marland enjoyed writing for a particular actor, because he'd pull out all the stops for them; and Julianne Moore was no exception.
    • I'm sorry, but I just can't get past the fact that it was Lois, of all people, who deceived so many people.  No matter how hard Rena Sofer tries to justify Lois' actions - and boy, does she work hard! - it just isn't something Lois would've done.
