Y&R to air classic episodes

I see what you mean! And you are right - it's what Aback called the 'winning Y&R formula': There's usually a psycho on the show... sometimes two at the same time! It's to the show's immense credit that it doesn't necessarily feel like it was done too much. I think it's something that fitted the show's dark, gothic elements well and also provided a lot of "action" in a decidedly slow-paced show.

Haha Yeah it makes sense now, they are just "Promos" but still a good idea...I wonder if next week they will air the 1996 one with Paul and Christine's honeymoon? I'm sure Doug Davidson and Lauralee Bell, maybe even Michelle Stafford will do a promo for that?

I just think that was the first story where a woman accused a man of rape/harassment in a decade. It was insulting because it was a false accusation (many women still get the message they shouldn't report because they won't be believed) and it came right after the sperm saga, which I loved but I could see why it was considered a misogynistic story.

Well when you say it like that, yes definitely a pattern. But like I said, they did such a good job of making the psychos gradually that way or make them tick.

But like @YRBB said above me, it is a testimony to the excellent writing and plotting that it was so not noticeable at all.

My cable on-screen TV guide added a description of the episode today. The other classics just had a generic description of a soap set in Genoa City. Pretty cool to see Sheila mentioned! It says

"David wears the same disguise as Danny to the masquerade ball; Paul and Lauren see Scott and Sheila."

"Holly Hollywood and the Wolf" clearly being Marilyn Monroe and the Beast from the Beauty of the Beast is cracking me up. So is Esther trying to be a sexy French maid and then just scurrying to follow Katherine's coattails.

The costumes are so cute and fun. This is great.

Katherine, Rex, and that damn necklace

I'm suddenly back in my grandma's kitchen.

Jeanne Cooper, man. What a great woman who could just do it all.

Pre-empted in NJ for Cuomo's press conference. I was going to wait to watch the episode b/c I'm on September 1991, but wanted to catch a glimpse of HD Y&R. A shame for those tuning in. Hopefully someone will upload just like last episode.

    • I think Ben had already left while under Marland and only returned briefly to reconcile with Eve. The whole thing confuses me as I thought for a long time that Eve left the show to go be with him and that was when they reconciled, but it seems like he returned, they got back together, then he left and maybe they were still together until she left to join him? I have no idea.  It does seem like the interim writers were using some characters like Justin and Helena who were quickly dumped under Kobe/Long, which is a shame. Helena is one of those characters who likely always had a shelf life but Rose Alaio was such a vibrant screen presence, if Kobe/Long had just been patient, she likely would have fit in well in the Reva era.
    • Also, the lawsuit story was not the right story to bring Naomi and Bill into a court battle since those types of lawsuits are usually resolved via settlements.
    • I know that Sara did eventually become Carrie's therapist, but I was curious if the show had her make comments regarding Carrie's stunts of making it seem as though Justin was cheating on Jackie.  Given that Justin cheated on Sara with both Jackie and Brandy, I wondered if it was wise of her to counsel Carrie given the conflict of interest involved. @DRW50I think once Adam/Sara end up married.. Marland didn't see any reason to explore Sara's personal life after the actor playing Adam was released.  I know that Sara lasts until at least Christmas 1982 on the show.. but I don't think she ended up staying on for very long into 1983. The period between Marland quitting and Pam Long starting was the perfect time to clean house on characters that had outgrown their usefulness  (i.e. Ben, Evie, Sara, Jennifer, Morgan).. and tying up stories started by Marland that were too complex (Mona Enright, Mark/Jennifer/Amanda triangle).
    • Unpopular opinion:  The focus on the soap opera tropes over the mysteries and crimes was partly what did the show in.  Also, featuring characters not involved in the legal, police, and criminal elements also hurt the show and took away what made it unique. Featuring characters like Jody, Raven, Sky, etc hurt the show long term.  The show ABCified starting in 1976/1977 and then went through a youthification period starting in 1981.
    • I feel like the lawsuit storyline was resolved quickly because the show didn’t want to spring for more sets.
    • It's been a while, but we have seen the foyer to Bill and Hayley's house as well as the exterior entrance to their house. The foyer was first seen in the premiere episode when Hayley met Vanessa at the house.
    • There's still a year or two before Larkin arrives. Joel is there already. EON does noticeably youthify, although I think they carry it off. Admittedly I haven't seen most of the Jody stories, which from what people here have said aren't great.
    • I don't mind the actor who plays Brian. He's fine. The problem for me is that Paige seems so wishy wishy. She doesn't seem to have much of a personality at this point so I don't see why Brian would be so besotted with her. She just lurches from one trauma to the next. Granted, it's only been a month, but she's not as vibrant as April or even Deborah who has had minimal screen time by this point.  I do worry about the influence of GH on the show since I'm in fall of 1979 and characters have conversations and there's not the drive to "youthify" the show. However, I think Marceau (sp?) is gone. He was given a rather tame sendoff. How long was the actor on the show? I hope this is not a sign of things to come. I worry the show is setting up a murder mystery around one of my favorite characters and I will be mightily annoyed. I also noticed in recent Search for Tomorrow episodes uploaded to YT that the actors playing Logan and Eliot showed up. I don't watch the show but they were in the screencaps. When does Larkin Malloy show up or has he already left? Joel Crothers hasn't shown up either unless I've blinked and missed him.
