I wish they would go ahead and give the job to Janice Ferri Esser and/or Natalie Minardi Slater -- presuming, of course, the ladies would be interested.

I wonder if people like that or Sara Bibel would be afraid to take the gig in fears they'd end up fired. It doesn't seem like it's easy to be HW for this show. Maybe seeing the level of interference causes people not to wanna rock the boat. Could also be Steve Kent and other higher ups wanting a more proven name. The HW choices all suggest that. The only wild card was MAB. Being realistic, giving Dena Higley a chance makes sense when you look at who is available from the pool they will be willing to look at. They won't hire a Hogan Sheffer from outside of soaps, no newbies, nobody black so it's limited to the merry go round writers. Carlivati is taken right now (unless they try to steal him during the contract lapse), I believe David Kriezman has another gig as well, Megan McTavish seems retired and Barbara Bloom is currently working at GH. I'm not sure who else from the merry go round is currently available. I also feel like Pratt currently has a gig.

You figure Janice Ferri Esser has been with Y&R for 30 years a SW and Natalie Minardi Slater 21 years as a BW/AHW (with another 7 years as production staff previously) - they probably see what's happened to the HW's before them and figure there's an awful lot of risk and little reward. Their episodes are head and shoulders better than the rest, and maybe that's good enough for them.

I mean...at least Meg Bennett has history with the show, but Guza would kill everyone over the age of 50 except Victor who'd become 10x more obnoxious and somehow be viewed as the town hero all the while. Hard no.

Much as I know a lot of people weren't thrilled with them, I wouldn't mind TomSell giving it a go. As much as their DAYS went off the rails after their heavy hitters left, and they had a tendency to add bizarre new characters (the Ozark chucklehead crew), their first year at DAYS at least had some thought and planning put into it, and had more actual romantic/sexual dramatic elements to it, which I haven't really seen in the same way since anywhere. Really, their main problem was that their plans fell apart after Eileen Davidson, Ali Sweeney, and James Scott all left in quick succession, and they scrambled (poorly) to fill the void.

I know they're very different shows, and that they tend to go a little too far toward high camp, but I recognized something in them, thematically, and in the structure of their stories, that was somewhat more akin to how Y&R used to be (on a much less sophisticated level, of course).

And yes, I do realize this is a deeply unpopular opinion to hold. But I think I would rather them to Godfather Guza.

I don't know about Gary Tomlin -- he's either too campy or too boring -- but I'll certainly take him (and Christopher Whitesell) over Bob Guza ANYday.

Hell, I'd take the job, even if I had to do it for free (in exchange for creative control).  I just want to get in there and write Y&R (or DAYS).

You and me both, believe me.

I just know the people we're now stuck with in the writing game. And honestly, they're among the least offensive of a bad lot. At least Whitesell knows how to structure a story effectively. Something that's sorely lacking at Y&R right now.

I just clued in that they spoke to Dumb Dena and I am going to sh*t.

WHO the hell thinks this woman is fit to run a writing room?? She tanks every show she works at! Sure the ratings go up the first few months, but...

I am at a loss for words. The stank in the food chain at Sony and CBS is putrid. What the HELL are they thinking???

This:

That's what they're thinking.

They don't care about the long term anymore.  They just want someone to give the ratings a jolt.  They'll worry about down the road, down the road.

    • I assume they did at some point during the finale...
    • Kelly was a horribly-written character overall. Just think, two Emmy-winning actresses (including Cynthia Watros, Nina, GH, and Annie, GL) couldn't make it work. Pamela is campy, but so are Dani, Vanessa, Leslie, and Joey. And, I don't want to be too judgy because my love for camp changes depending on the show. OLTL, DAYS, and some eras of GH had me rolling with the camp. However, Passions was overkill and I hated it. And, here, I can take it or leave it. It's ok in small doses (note to RC). I see this show as more of a serious drama.
    • I think one of the reasons that pilot didn't get picked up was because Vicki L was associated more with being Thelma Harper and playing older then she was playing her own age.  It was a blessing it didn't get picked up, or we would have been deprived of the syndicated era of Mama's Family.   Also, worth noting a Pre Night Court Marsha Warfield and pre Perfect Strangers Rebecca Arthur in the cast.  All talented women, but stuck with a bad script. And the other pilot had a pre Fran Fine.. Fran Drescher as the best friend.  I think that pilot might have been picked up if Karen Valentine and Fran Drescher switched roles.
    • So, on rewatch....did Rick and Mindy never have sex?
    • Cady had a fairly posh accent or manner as Rosanna - the character was a 180 from Dixie when she went to ATWT, and it was a huge success initially. As someone mostly only familiar with the nagging, miserable or clueless Dixie of the mid-late '90s and early 2000s it was what convinced me Cady could act. I thought she was incredible in her first run. Later, in future stints, her hair and story and performances were all over the place but a lot of that was down to the show for me. She brought some of Rosanna back with her to Dixie in her ill-fated return and a lot of people didn't like it, which I understood but I did think the character needed some change. I think she's had a little bit of the same persona and arch performance in every role she's played since, including Jennifer Horton at DAYS or Kelly at Y&R, who later became a maniac and was easily the worst work I've ever seen Cady do. It has kind of infected her overall mannerisms, I'll allow that, but I do think she brought Dixie back together as herself while still evolving the character when she returned to AMC again in 2012-13. Nonetheless, for me the upshot is that this is a character where Cady's kookier recent performance style suits the role. But I can understand it grating for people.
    • Yeah, Loretta Swit's passing stings. My late dad LOVED the show (he died last November) and watched it religiously. In first run and repeats.  And I was literally born the day after the show's premiere, so I grew up with it! I know many loved later, softer Margaret, but I loved Early Hot Lips. In real life, I'm all for less misogyny, but to me, the early years of M*A*S*H were just funnier. May Loretta Swit rest in peace. Thanks for all the memories connected to my dad!

    • I agree that she isn't Dixie or Rosanna and shouldn't be acting like either. I just found it strange that she had a naive Southern character and a wealthy urbane character in the past and didn't experiment with accents before (unless I missed it, correct me if I'm wrong). She used to do improv characters on YouTube. She's probably doing something similar here.

    • And here I thought I'd never think about Lauren Tewes again after her brief appearance in Twin Peaks Season 3.
    • I may be the single person who does not mind Transatlantic Campy Pamela. I think it perfectly suits this sort of Absolutely Fabulous-esque supporting character she's playing much more than it did when Cady tried weird and often broad stuff at AMC* or Y&R, or later stints at ATWT. She's not Dixie and she's not trying to be. I will freely admit some of the other chances she took at other shows often came off stiff, hammy or downright mortifying (Kelly Andrews, come on down). (* - and I say that as one of the few who was somewhat into Cady trying to make Dixie more cosmopolitan in the Rosanna Cabot mold in mid-2000s AMC, just to liven the character up again)
