And if they do, then they shouldn't act surprised when the broadcast networks eventually go the way of 8-track players (which they will).

On ABC, Rama, Vimal, Vimal's sister and parents all made appearances on the show.  Only Rama and Vimal made it onto the 2.0 version and I barely remember Vimal being on there as he seemed pretty marginalized.  It seemed like it was mostly Rama flirting with Cutter in the TOLN version.

Would love to be a fly on the wall when La Staff strolls back onto set ... funny how Gina was well liked by the Y&R cast and Stafford seemed well liked by the GH cast ... lol. This was all so bizarre ...

Admittedly, it was a subplot and they didn't have much airtime in only the 30-40 episodes produced, but it presented Vimal as a virile male who was flourishing in an open marriage. On ABC he was the sexless, goofy husband Rama ran around on while trying to bag Cristian; they only reunited (and fixed her character) towards the end when DF left the show. They both had more dimension on 2.0 to me and it was a small step in the right direction.

This storyline with Ana/Tessa in the studio, feels like mostly nothing right now. I wonder where they are going on here, because it's not that interesting. And it really feels like Josh is just doing this just to so he can say is using Ana in some capacity. It feels like a waste of Loren's Lott's talent/ the character.

Maybe they will do more with whoever is stalking Mariah, which would the more interesting storyline to focus more on. Mariah was looking at a threatening text today.

Also, the show did give a little more information about Elena' today. He mother was named Monica and Elena feels guilty that she wasn't around when her mother fell and died. Maybe they will start to flesh out Elena more.  They did have her interact with Mariah today, though Mariah initiated the exchange and admitted she did because she's overprotective of Devon.

And Sharon was pretty emotional when Victor told Adam was alive and wanted her to help jog his memory back. Victor was laying it on her, to try and get her to help with Adam. Nick now knows as well, and seemed concerned and testy that Sharon may help Adam. It looks like we may have three men in Sharon's orbit (Rey, Adam, Nick) for her to interact/deal with.

I think Rey will end up being odd man out. I guess they could find someone to pair him with but I think Jordi will be out of job at some point. Just a hunch, even though they seemed to make a big deal in saying "he's staying". (They weren't going to be able to axe all four Rosales at once ... and dumped the schemer and the nobody, easy outs, even though Mia could have had potential, if written better). Rey, Lola and Mia all could have had more potential ... now Lola just feels like she's serving a storyline purpose for the time being. And the writing for her is all over the place. Mal had her bitching at Kyle for an 'expensive purse' yet now she's banging a married man? I think the actress could play a better bitch than heroine. She had potential ... but viewers checked out pretty quickly on her.

I actually like Sharon and Rey,  (Rey is the only Rosales that I like)  I do wonder what happens with them and the character of Rey. Nick was acting testy and upset that Sharon would be interacting with Adam again on today's show. He seemed more concerned about that, than how Adam's return will affect him raising Christian as his own. (And Sharon did point out to him, that she understands that this will affect him raising Christian. But he brushed it aside and focused more on her interacting with Adam.) Nick was also acting like he felt that Adam would take advantage of Sharon and their past connection to each other, even with Adam suffering the memory loss.

Rey was also trying to find out more about Sharon's past with Adam, and Sharon told him that she was happy being in her new relationship with him and wanted that to continue to go well. I do believe that Adam coming back will bring discord and will uproot things for people, including Sharon.

But maybe he won't be as involved in her orbit once:

And then it will just be her and Rey and maybe Nick later on.

KMan101,

Regarding your comments about the Rosales, I do agree that Mia could have had more potential. But I think they were doing too much with her early on and that hurt the character. I did find it amusing they way she was interacting with Jack at the opening of Society's dinner, and trying to get him to take a romantic interest on her. He passed of course on that but I thought that was more fun/entertaining than the really abrasive/strong way they introduced her in. She could have worked as a vixen, but I think they wrote too OTT in the beginning and it hurt her.

I think that Arturo was okay until they had him judge/threaten to beat up Kyle for caring about Lola. And then he went downhill even further when he cheated on Abby by sleeping with Mia again.

Lola is a mess. I don't know how that character can be fixed at this point. She is an incredibly judgmental person who is hailed by a saint and who constantly mistreated her boyfriend. A boyfriend she cursed at for buying her an expensive purse and who she constantly degraded. And now she decides to sleep with him after he marries another woman. And he and other people are still referring to her as "perfect." It's ridiculous.

She doesn't work as heroine, but she can't be a vixen either, one big reason because the characters (sans Summer) don't call her out for her bad behavior. She gets away with doing whatever she wants and is heavily propped. More than anyone IMO. It was cringeworthy the other day seeing Abby literally begging her for the sexual details of her and Kyle's first time together. Just ew. Lola has become slimy (in addition to being very unlikeable), IMO, yet she's really not called out by anybody except Summer.

Rey is the only that's actually likeable, IMO.

I agree that the 2.0 version presented a more flattering portrayal of Vimal in particular.  Neither one presented a full nuanced portrayal of what an Indian family could be, but perhaps, as you said, time may have been a factor.  Soaps, even at their best, have usually been horrible in how they apportion their storylines to character development.

Neither were Vimal's parents, who made appearances in the final months on ABC.

Like I said in the previous post both were lacking in showing a nuanced, full portrayal of what a South Asian-American family could be.  Sad to say that both were far better than anything Y&R offered with the lone Ravi character.

    • Happy 18th Birthday, Sophia! I like that Tate gave her a birthday party. And that Marlena counseled him about whether or not he has feelings for Sophia, and his relationship with Holly. I like how messy Tate is and I hope he continues to be messy. He just needs to have more argument/fight scenes with Doug III

Days just needs to work a little bit more on establishing better chemistry between Tate and Sophia, but I still think that’s mostly due to Rachel Boyd. Sometimes, I think that Sophia might secretly be scheming, but with the way RB plays it, (if that’s what they’re going for), it doesn’t seem to be working. Tate was also really sweet and dorky during the party too The drug scenes didn’t do much for me though. I don’t mind that Kevin panicked and ran off with the drug once he heard Steve and Shawn coming, but I felt like that story was the weakest part of today. But I am interested in seeing what happens next. And I couldn’t help but laugh when I noticed that Steve and Shawn had matching jackets Btw, I see Mayor Price established a quid pro quo with Xander today lol I wouldn’t mind that being more than just a plot point. It could lead to some pretty good drama if it’s handled correctly. And it would be a lot better than Xander declaring war on Sweet Bits/Chanel and Felicity.  And Stephanie, finally having her mother to confide in about her life, her relationship with Alex, etc. has been one of the best things about the Paula/Jeanne episodes. The book thing still seems very Ron-like though, mostly because it’s so centered around Alex, sort of like how GH used to make storylines about Liz all about Finn or Franco Hopefully, Stephanie talks to Kayla about the book. I’d like to hear more of her perspective on it. I also like that Kayla and Marlena were there for each other as well. These are such better ways to use all three of them. And, we got an update about John One other thing I’ve noticed about the Paula/Jeanne episodes (except for the ones that are worked on by Jamey) is that they’re longer than Ron episodes. Episodes usually clock in at around 40-41 minutes now, as opposed to 35-37, or as short as 31.
    • Also Victor being the obstacle for Kyle/Claire feels forced. If anything it should be Diane. Diane has a history of having issues with the Newmans, doesn’t she? Jack could be the one trying to reel her in while she’s meddling in Kyle and Claire’s relationship. They’re making the characters of Diane, Victoria, Nick, Sharon be way too complacent when they could have a stronger role in the younger characters like Mariah/Tessa, Kyle/Claire etc
    • A year later we had these ratings for the week of May 11-17 1987. This was probably the last time the CBS soaps (at least til Dallas’ finale) ranked this high. Dynasty had already ended its season.  CBS reran the Dallas Early Years movie on Saturday night against Golden Girls’ season finale, which was the failed Empty Nest back door pilot.  Interestingly a repeat Family Ties was #1 this week. The week before the season finale of Family Ties beat out Cosby as well, but it was Cheers that beat them both out with Diane’s exit.

    • Hello to everybody!

Please register in order to view this content

I'm writing a series of essays about the first time of a LGBT character in US soaps. I already have datas about Sharon Duvall in DAYS (1977) as first Bisex, Lynn Carson in AMC (1983) as first Lesbian, Hank Elliott on ATWT (1989) as first Gay (someone have or can find the episode in which Paul Ryan finds out about Hank and does not take it very well? I have seen Hank's coming out to Iva and when Hank gets a bullet to save Paul's life from the latter evil father and when he gets tested for HIV after finding out Charlie's diagnosis, but Soap Opera Digest recaps are too much concises...) and Billy Douglas on OLTL (1992) as first LGBT teen in both daytime and primetime TV (I have seen all the episodes on You Tube. BTW, what a great storyline, why it was ignored by the Emmys? Andrew Carpenter and Billy's father players are both really great in their roles! Oh, well, if OLTL was not nominated for Best Drama in 1994 with Marty's gang rape story which won four major awards and was spectacular, no surprise at all - sadly) and I have read something about Azure in The City (1996) as first Trans, but I'd like to see the episode where Bernado finds out and Azure confirms what is said in that newspaper to have something to quote. I like quoting, it gives the essays more depth. I already read the biweekly recaps from Soap Opera Digest on Tumblr and single episodes recaps on IMDB, but I'd like to have more to write about. And something more about critics and public opinions - I only knows that the storyline was rapidly axed because of bad writing and bad performance by Carlotta Chung, but I have nothing to quote.   PS Thank you @JAS0N47 for your incredible and rich site (and work on it). In particular for the Nielsen ratings on weekly basis lists since 1974 and for everything about Sharon Duval - specially for the script of the confession episode dated 23 May 1977! I'm not a DAYS viewers (I'm Italian, I live in Italy and on You Tube there is almost nothing if not short videos), but I've seen some clips of Marlena's first possession (Deidre Hall is terrific in it! Storyline is garbage, but it has its chilling moments and it is funny - I laugh everytime I remember Kristen say to Marlena "according to the book of demonology"! Was she an espert of demons or what!? ) and read on Soap Opera Central daily recaps about infamous Melaswen (brainwashed Marlena has a particular sense of humor - killing ex alcoholic Maggie with a bottle of wine and Alice with her donuts...), so I know something about the soap. Little, but better than nothing.

    • I'm curious the motivation for keeping Bela on beyond the circus story arc.  Did he play a character like his character on EON, or was he more of a good guy? I know he ended up with Sunny at the end of the series, but I always thought that Sunny/Hogan could have been revived once the lack of chemistry between him and the NuLiza became apparent.   Actually... the NuLiza (Louan Gideon) reminded me more of Sunny than she did Liza as played by Sherry... and she just threw off the whole vibe of the show. I see Estelle has just arrived in the late October 1985 episodes, which only means that Wendy and Stephanie are soon on their way out.   It also appears that the Sarah/Quinn/Wendy triangle was set up by Mayer.. and it looks as though Tomlin is going to deactivate it by the introduction of Colleen Dion's character.   I don't understand why no one on the show thought to look at Quinn and realize that he was the problem and write him out.

    • I kind of assume they're toning down Rachel's bad seed tendencies a bit to make it less obvious if they're going for her as the shooter. At least that's what I hope they're doing - I've really enjoyed Rachel being a bratty evil DiMera princess and Marlena finally getting a grandchild she deserves.
