Ehh that wasn't all JFP's doing. When it was originally reported that they were looking for a recast Phyllis it came from Sony.

After GT won the Emmy there were pics of her out to dinner solo with Steve Kent and Sony is the one who "leaked" the info about her audition to the press.

That's why I never believed it was just Phyllis fans or the casting of Phyllis was JUST a JFP thing. Sony was also very integral and everyone mentioned by them too was 40 or younger.

I'm not going to keep going back and forth about this but if Mal and Sally had any real use for 99% of the cast they'd be doing more than they are (with the exception of Amelia, Christel and Daniel). Does that also apply to Eileen? Who has no real story of her own? Or Bryton? Or Melody? Sharon? Like, you do realize that it's damn near August and nobody has anything CLOSE to an Emmy reel except maybe Greg Rikaart (and I guess CK or DG if you think they've been marginally decent - I don't).

I think a better argument is the belief that Sally had other plans for Phyllis but Sony or CBS forced her to keep Philly together (after she swore in an interview that they wouldn't be) and so this is the result. It's quite obvious something happened because Gina was giving interviews about discussions she had (I guess with Sally) about Phyllis being single and re-discovering herself and how she was excited to play that and then randomly it was back to Phyllis and Billy. It was obviously network-mandated or Sony because Sally made her opinion on them quite clear.

But either way, I think it's silly to claim that the writers and EP are invested in anyone really when 99% the actors have no noteworthy material to speak of 8 months into the year (and many of them have verbalized this).

Aside from all of that.....does anyone find it odd that Sally no longer gives interviews? She gave that first interview to Michael Logan, there was some ugly backlash and nobody has heard a word from her since. Mal gives every single interview in every single magazine article. She literally has not said a word (and if you go back and read her interview - NONE of what she said actually happened).

It's like Angelica or Steve Kent or someone read the interview and not only shut her down but told her that all her plans won't fly and she needs to change them (she said no more Jack vs. Victor, she said no more Philly, she said a great love for Ashley, she named her top 8 characters and many of them barely make the top 10 in episode counts now....)

JFP wanted Phyllis de-aged. But it's common knowledge that she wanted the role for KSu but was overruled by execs who wanted GT, which is why we got Sage, a role created specifically for KSu.  Supposedly, it was PB who was instrumental in the role being offered to GT. He recommended her, or so I've heard.

Well, I never claimed that any of those examples you listed had Mal and Sally investment. But it's achingly obvious that Phyllis doesn't as much as it's achingly obvious Chelsea doesn't.

It's also common knowledge that Mal Young was the Philly fan. He spoke in the mags about how he took Philly scenes to the weekly exec meeting to lobby for them. The show found a way to allow Philly to exist in the confines of their long term plans, which are clearly Vikki/Billy. Everyone wins! Lol

I do think it's odd we never hear from Sally anymore. It's also been obvious to me that Mal and Sally have conflicting visions. I sometimes feel like she's letting him hang himself.

JFP was not the only person who wanted Phyllis de-aged. That's my point. Both CBS and Sony did. Bergman didn't recommend GT so I don't know where that came from either. He didn't know and had never met GT until the audition (actually they claimed they may have met once but neither remembered). He has told the story himself about how Laura Wright told him at the Emmys after Gina got the part that Gina was going to be amazing and she's sweet and blah blah when he was still unsure about bringing Phyllis back.  Plus, GT's biggest audition moments were scenes with Josh Morrow.

The directive to put Philly back together came from higher up than Mal obviously. Mal is the EP. Sally is both the co-HW and the EP and even after all of that talking Mal did to the mags she STILL said they weren't happening. Mal does NOT outrank Sally. Angelica and/or Sony stepped in and told her to put Philly back together.  I'm sure that Victoria and Billy will get back together eventually, nobody believes Philly are some forever couple, I just don't think anybody sees Phack that way anymore either. In fact, the first thing Sally did when she got here was immediately stop with the Phyllis crying over Jack stuff and put her on a dating app and hanging in Nick's bar all the time. And I also don't think Sally is as sold on Victoria and Billy as everyone thinks, not this version. Because she had six months to put them together before they went back to Philly and all the did was almost kiss I think once and the rest of the time was Billy doing a bunch of boring after-school specialish scenes with Reed.

But I think this board really underestimates how at odds Sony and CBS seem to be about current Y&R.  For some reason people think it's just Sally and Mal at odds. I don't. The survey about JT made that blatantly clear. Angelica McDaniel is on Twitter assuring people he isn't going anywhere while Sony is sending out a Survey asking if you miss Billy Miller and if you like JT less than him.

I don't even get the "letting him hang himself" stuff cause the HW always goes before the EP and Mal already signed his new contract. It's quite obvious that Angelica or Steve Kent or someone said they'd rather she not give any interviews. Michael Logan said they would do a part two after she had been on Y&R six months and nothing. That apparently isn't happening.

I think its weird Sally had one interview and she never talked again. Well Sally didnt want phyllis and billy back together. She obviously was forced. Actually Gina back in 2014 was told about Phyllis and sent a tape. I dont think she thought she was get the part. Apparently she blew everyone out of water. Sony made the right call with Gina as she won the emmy but why is Sally criminally wasting her. My prediction Mal Young is staying the cast and crew love him. I bet in September YR will be naming a new head writer they have had to wait until Sally contract expires. She signed a 1 year deal. I think Mal/CBS let Sally have a little free reign in beginning but plunging ratings and now interference will prompt them.to hire someone else.

I concede on the PB thing. That was second hand info and could be infactual.

Of course the higher ups had to agree for Philly to get back together. No one doubts that. It's a battle Mal Young won against Sally.

Agree about CBS and Sony at odds over JT. I think that's obvious.

If the EP gets his way and all his casting and stories flop hard and demos are the pits, I can't imagine why the writer will go before the EP just because it historically happens. Lol

+1

The only thing that's not speculation is when you've got a quote. Lol

You make some valid points. I agree with everything. It is apparent that CBS / SONY have reigned SSM in. I actually feel sad for her. I don't think she is a talented writer at all, but she had her vision and the higher ups put a stop to it very quickly. I am not sure why they were so hellbent on Philly if they have zero long-term potential.

Most people know Gina Tognoni was supposed to replace Victoria and all of a sudden it was dropped when it was suppose to happen. They then casted her when MS left the role of Phyllis a few years later...........Current Phyllis is still classless but also a bit declawed than MS Phyllis..........

Gina Tognoni was only considered for Victoria when Heather left in 2003 it was never serious talks. Then Gina talked to MAB back in 2009 when GL ended but she opted OLTL. Gina won an emmy she rocks its just Sally gave her zero to do

    • Thanks for the tip. I'm not even there viewing-wise yet and as I told my co-worker who grew up on DAYS today, I'm just not ready. So I know I'll be a mess when I get to the episode.    Love all of this.

    • Yeah I just took it as the life Marlena truly wanted and needed started with John that day.  She lived a life before with loves and happiness, but found her soul mate in John.  Besides, I don't expect Marlena to get into semantics of her previous loves with her husband that clearly has little time left. And, yes, @j swift in Salem you just say Happy Anniversary whenever you multi time married friends decide what day they want to celebrate it lol.

    • I understood it very differently as well. I wouldn't have piled on, but @janea4old and I were clearly composing our posts at the same time (great minds think alike, and fools seldom differ). To me, she was saying that their love was an awakening.  Obviously, she loved Roman and their twins, as well as Don.  But, John revealed something to her that she had never seen before.  I actually think it is a lovely, and very optimistic, idea to think that one's third marriage could be special because you met each other at a specific time in your life. Not to be crude about the departed, but John was trained by the best, and he rocked her world.  Think about it, before Kristin met him, she was just a mild-mannered social worker.  And< I doubt Roman and Kate are doing whatever Doc and John did with those strawberries and cream.  If we translate soap dialogue into reality, that is probably what Marlena meant. Of course, John was only her third husband if you don't count Eugene and

(aka the husband nobody mourned).  If you choose that definition, John was also her 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th husband.  However, I believe it was @carolineg who reminded us that in polite society, friends just say Happy Anniversary, and don't mention the years in between.

    • disagree on all counts To me it's obvious that what Marlena meant was that she was already a complete person within herself before meeting John; but after meeting John her life blossomed to a new level she hadn't known before. I don't think she was bound to John as back and forth caretakers. I think she and John were true equals. Roman loved Marlena in his own way but he was somewhat patronizing at times.
    • I agree that she looks good.  I wasn't slamming her, her age or her looks in my last post.  I was just commenting on the fact that her wardrobe and hair gave me Susan Sullivan/"Dharma & Greg" vibes, lol.
