Dallas: Discussion Thread

In CBS drama history, Dallas 14 season run ties it w/ Knots Landing, NCIS: Los Angeles, Blue Bloods, and places it behind NCIS, Gunsmoke, Lassie, CSI, Criminal Minds.

If Dallas had continued into the 1990s, it would have looked old school next to Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, NYPD Blue, ER. It's so funny that Dallas final season overlapped w/ Beverly Hills 90210 first season, Dallas ended Spring 1991, and Beverly Hills 90210 blew up with the Summer 1991 episodes.

The natural end point I think was Spring 1988 but when watching the episodes Dallas was effectively over Spring 1989 w/ Sue Ellen departure. The final two seasons I don't feel were necessary and they only happened because CBS was in their third place primetime mess era.

I recognize Dallas place in television history as the most successful primetime soap and as Larry Hagman's career resurgence that became his second signature role or some may say his career-defining role, plus the influence it had on the daytime soaps.

I agree.  I know I've said this before, but to me, the final 2-3 seasons of DALLAS felt like nothing more than a parade of indistinguishable blonde women mixed with J.R. and Cliff's Road Runner/Wile E. Coyote-like antics.

At @kalbir one of the final 1991 episodes of Dallas was titled “90265” as a reference to 90210 as well as being Malibu’s zip code when Bobby was searching for Susan Lucci’s character

My parents watched til the bitter end though as did I

I feel like the plot of the 1996 JR Returns movie would have sufficed for the series finale. I consider that movie to be the end of the show anyways and the 2012 series as non-canon

In one of the later seasons they did that episode where Bobby and J.R. get trapped in an elevator and start drinking and talking about the past. There is a flashback to 1978 when Bobby started at Ewing oil after marrying Pam....in only about 10 years you can really tell Patrick and Larry had rapidly aged quite a bit. Patrick was already going gray (some episodes looks like was trying to cover it up before giving in) by that point and was only about 40 when that episode aired. J.R. looked like he should be several years into retirement.

LOL that was actually that was the  300th episode and I know what you mean.

Hagman was 57 but looked a bit older, probably from all the hard and heavy drinking he was doing during the show’s run.

Of course the styling during the later years of the show did no one any favors, especially for Duffy and Gray. Linda looked so much younger on Melrose a few years later than she did as Sue Ellen during the 88-89 season and her appearance in the finale, while Duffy looked refreshed by the time Step by Step premiered.

Her face started to change around 1982 along with various awful hairstyles/dye jobs. Her hair looked best in season 1 and 2 before the shag. I guess that was supposed to be courtesy of Jhirmack. I just bet she really used those products

I don’t think Victoria had any noticeable work done until the middle of the dream season. This was the season where she missed an episode or two because of “back issues” and then came back looking different.

Her different look after the initial bunch of episodes was due to heavier makeup and fussier hairstyles. She was such a beauty - she didn’t need those. I agree that she looked her best in the first season, with the longer dark hair and lighter makeup.

She really was beautiful till she started with the surgery and bad hairstyles. I loved the way she looked circa 1978-79 with the long flowing hair. The episode where she comes riding up to Bobby on horseback when he pulls into the driveway when they argue about Jenna (Morgan Fairchild) she was stunning.  Poor Ken Kercheval (Cliff) really aged quickly too during his run.

It’s always so shocking to see what Cliff was like before he became a buffoon. Or Jenna when she was played by someone who could act.

Pam does look at her best here. And that scene with Ellie and Pam is a winner.

That is a great scene Later when Miss Ellie is concerned about Jock's friendship with Julie Gray, Pam repeats her words back to her about fighting for Jock.

LOL at someone who can act. Presley was awful and dull in the role of Jenna. I wish Fairchild had been brought back to battle with Principal in meaty scenes.

Cliff really did come apart as the show went on. Ken aged very quickly and came across as more eccentric as time went on.

    • Word of advice... you have to view the show without the 2025 lenses.. which means you need to 86 the misandry.
    • i love reading other posters alternate takes and scenarios. Yours would have really upped the tension.
    • Amanda is not my cup of tea. That's all I'm gonna say. She's repetitive and childish. She acts like a brat with her parents and has this constant "I'm not satisfied or happy" look on her face. The actress is okay in my opinion. I'm not impressed by anything I've seen her do so far. But she's okay.  BUT Amanda's repetitive scenes with Sam are the ones that I want to fast-forward the most. They just have 2  topics they like to talk about... and it's always "You are infringing on my right to be a powerful career woman! I need to be outside dating men for a job, so I can WORK and prove I'M NOT A RICH GIRL ONLY!" and he's like "You and your family are buying me a career and I don't want it! I WANT TO BE ABLE TO STRUGGLE and be poor and you guys ARE denying me the opportunity by giving it all on a silver platter" This is their main storyline for me... and it's just annoying when it's the same every single episode. It's a fake struggle that I don't buy. These people are so spoiled by this point and have everything... don't make me suffer listening to them bicker how amazing their life is, so they are unhappy about that. Just a personal view. I'm not saying THIS IS the situation. My view is also restricted, since I'm only 4-5 months into the episodes.
    • It's shocking to see Steffy look down on anyone. She was the new generation HO for years. I mean... she was nasty and using sex to seduce married-engaged-in-relationship-men all the time. She was embracing it fully. Bradley was accenting on the fact that Taylor's daughter had become Brooke 2. I remember how disgusting it was when she was using Hope's virginity to her advantage and offering to f-ck the guys that wanted Hope. It was ABSURDLY nasty.  Then couple of years ago Bradley decided we should forget about it and made Steffy BECOME her grandmother. IN AN INSTANT. There was no build up to it. Which aged the f-ck out the character and made her unbearable. Because it's one thing to see an actual matriarch, older woman doing these things, being a moral judge... but it's complete joke to see the ex-ho acting like this. Ex-ho that is still incredibly young and has no right acting like she is better that anyone or... a moral JUDGE. Steffy and Hope's personalities got swapped!!! That's the irony of it. So any time these gang-style of fans come attacking Hope... for acting like a "slut"... I pinch myself - their HEROINE Steffy was doing this HARCORE. Are these people oblivious or just pretending not to remember. How can you stan a moral judge... that attacks "sluts" and also stan the same type of behavior you are attacking... years ago. How does this happen. But I repeat myself at this point.  I agree with everything you said 100000 percent. It's the truth. At least in my eyes.
    • The Amanda pregnancy was a blunder. Amanda and Sam were AW's best bet for a starcrossed supercouple. Young love destined to be turn apart by outside forces and misunderstandings . Battling for years to finally get together. Instead AW had them married and pregnant within a year.
    • It is his fatal flaw.  He's smart, cute, and loyal.  But, a total chauvinist pig.  We're looking through a 2025 lens, but April's from a wealthy family, (that she recently met), she should be allowed to contribute to her own home. Especially if Draper is going to work for the Crime Commission, rather than joining Mike's private law firm (did I get that part correct?) How about smoking while the baby is in the room?  It all looks nuts by current standards. Raven was married to Geraldine's son Kevin, but had an affair with Logan (whom Geraldine also considered like a son). Raven got pregnant by Logan, then Kevin died (long story short).  The part you need to know is that Raven was bored being a mother to Jamey (check out my member name).  So, she starts going out to Elliott's club and leaving Jamey with April.  Logan is not happy that Raven keeps leaving their baby all around town.  And thus, Geraldine is not pleased with Raven either. Draper and Logan are frequently rivals in the courtroom.  FYI --- Draper is also Raven's step-brother (her mother married his father). Raven's real name is Charlotte. But, one day [she] was sitting on the lawn and saw this beautiful black bird with shiny wings fly by. [She] wanted to be that bird. So beautiful. So free. With beautiful black wings…"    @chrisml you'll hear that story soon, and I envy you getting to see it the first time.
    • There is a time... till the old storyline is cleaning up... where it's still kinda annoying. For me it was. That's a personal opinion. But in 10-20 episodes more... you'll find yourself enthralled. It's not even begun. I'm so glad to hear your reviews! And excited of what's to come for you!
    • Carly also has Nikki (Nicholas) with Lawrence. The easiest way to remember Chelsea is to think about how she was buried, stillborn, premature in a swamp and came back to life.  Or you can just remember her running over Bo/Hope's kid Zack.  Kind of ballsy to name her kid Issac if you ask me lol.
    • That's right Anita! Let her have it!

    • This is my other blind spot -- the children of Bo Brady's past loves.  Melanie:Carly as Chelsea:Billie -- but it is tough to keep them straight I dipped out during the Daniel of our Lives period of the show.
