Y&R May Discussion Thread

It's crazy how much better Gina and Jason look together than Gina and Peter. I will say I've really enjoyed the build to them finally hooking up. Jack really shouldn't be surprised though, this is what the third time she's cheated on him?

If Justin was smart, he'd pull a double duty until this season got greenlit for a second season. NBC isn't the most stable network when it comes to TV shows. They stay cancelling shows left and right in their first seasons instead of allowing them to build an audience gradually overtime.

Agreed. That's very difficult to pull off. Plus, I always viewed JT's Y&R time as a placeholder - he really is primetime material, so good for him. Just make JT's Adam really Gabriel and bring back MM. Haha. I'm guessing that's why they've really pulled back on Adam that past couple of months - he really should be far more involved in NE rather than this weird passive place.

On the other hand, SP's show was not picked up by CW, so I hope that means we'll see more of her soon.

Unless Hartley wants to pull a Tamara Tunie for a minute I'd say just write out Adam and Chelsea off in the sunset together on the run from Victor would be the most logical story solution. There's not much story for either of them for starters. From them one upping Victor in today's ep it looks like that is the direction the two are headed. Muhney back would be a disaster and would erase everything that Hartley's accomplished, plus I'm quite certain that Muhney has joined both Stafford and Rowell as persona non grata with Sony.

Hilary is probably going to end up sleeping with Jack in which case enter Jill, not Lily throwing water. Unless Hilary slept with Cane.

I think they should write Adam off short term in case his series fails, which most do.  Normally, I'd be against that, but recasting Adam again would be rough. Not sure why people even bring up bringing MM back, what a slap in the face that would be to the female cast. I would put Chelsea with Nick, so that when Adam comes back there's some conflict.

Originally I thought that getting both Sage and Dylan out the way so we could have bare bones, fierce Nick and Sharon vs. Adam and Chelsea story sounded good but it would take some complex writing to make it work well. Adam and Chelsea have become such a tight couple its improbable for them to split. Pairing Chelsea with Nick, even for some conflict would be unacceptable and actually be insulting to both MCE and the character of Chelsea.

They should've done Hilary v. Jill (over Jack) from the start. Yeah, I'd hate Hilary lying down with grandpa Jack but at least it'd pay homage and put a modern, new spin on Y&R's greatest rivalry--Kay v. Jill. Jess & Mishael had all the right chemistry as rivals to be the modern day Kay & Jill.

It's a conundrum really. I'd love to see MCE stay around but it would take another "death" of Adam to free the Chelsea character up or they would ripoff the Jonathan/Lizzie/Sarah/Alan story and apply it to Adam, Chelsea, Connor and Victor to make Chelsea remain sustainable. Even after that, I'd rather see Chelsea renew relations with Dylan or fool around with Luca before seeing Chelsea fall for Nick. This shouldn't be B&B for plot devices.

Who knows they could easily bring on a new Adam and do something similar from Burgress Jenkins to Jason Thompson but it will still be quite rough and it's going to take one heck of an actor to pull it off at the end of the day so a recast is entirely feasible, it just has to be the right one.

I've been calling Jillary for some time now. In a weird way MM looks better with PB than GT/PB. They also need to move Hilary from Devon - it really doesn't work at all. Can you imagine how awesome it will be to see Hilary drop her bags in the Abbott foyer? With the built-in conflict with Ashley, this could be a viable s/l.

    • Kelly was a horribly-written character overall. Just think, two Emmy-winning actresses (including Cynthia Watros, Nina, GH, and Annie, GL) couldn't make it work. Pamela is campy, but so are Dani, Vanessa, Leslie, and Joey. And, I don't want to be too judgy because my love for camp changes depending on the show. OLTL, DAYS, and some eras of GH had me rolling with the camp. However, Passions was overkill and I hated it. And, here, I can take it or leave it. It's ok in small doses (note to RC). I see this show as more of a serious drama.
    • I think one of the reasons that pilot didn't get picked up was because Vicki L was associated more with being Thelma Harper and playing older then she was playing her own age.  It was a blessing it didn't get picked up, or we would have been deprived of the syndicated era of Mama's Family.   Also, worth noting a Pre Night Court Marsha Warfield and pre Perfect Strangers Rebecca Arthur in the cast.  All talented women, but stuck with a bad script. And the other pilot had a pre Fran Fine.. Fran Drescher as the best friend.  I think that pilot might have been picked up if Karen Valentine and Fran Drescher switched roles.
    • So, on rewatch....did Rick and Mindy never have sex?
    • Cady had a fairly posh accent or manner as Rosanna - the character was a 180 from Dixie when she went to ATWT, and it was a huge success initially. As someone mostly only familiar with the nagging, miserable or clueless Dixie of the mid-late '90s and early 2000s it was what convinced me Cady could act. I thought she was incredible in her first run. Later, in future stints, her hair and story and performances were all over the place but a lot of that was down to the show for me. She brought some of Rosanna back with her to Dixie in her ill-fated return and a lot of people didn't like it, which I understood but I did think the character needed some change. I think she's had a little bit of the same persona and arch performance in every role she's played since, including Jennifer Horton at DAYS or Kelly at Y&R, who later became a maniac and was easily the worst work I've ever seen Cady do. It has kind of infected her overall mannerisms, I'll allow that, but I do think she brought Dixie back together as herself while still evolving the character when she returned to AMC again in 2012-13. Nonetheless, for me the upshot is that this is a character where Cady's kookier recent performance style suits the role. But I can understand it grating for people.
    • Yeah, Loretta Swit's passing stings. My late dad LOVED the show (he died last November) and watched it religiously. In first run and repeats.  And I was literally born the day after the show's premiere, so I grew up with it! I know many loved later, softer Margaret, but I loved Early Hot Lips. In real life, I'm all for less misogyny, but to me, the early years of M*A*S*H were just funnier. May Loretta Swit rest in peace. Thanks for all the memories connected to my dad!

    • I agree that she isn't Dixie or Rosanna and shouldn't be acting like either. I just found it strange that she had a naive Southern character and a wealthy urbane character in the past and didn't experiment with accents before (unless I missed it, correct me if I'm wrong). She used to do improv characters on YouTube. She's probably doing something similar here.

    • And here I thought I'd never think about Lauren Tewes again after her brief appearance in Twin Peaks Season 3.
    • I may be the single person who does not mind Transatlantic Campy Pamela. I think it perfectly suits this sort of Absolutely Fabulous-esque supporting character she's playing much more than it did when Cady tried weird and often broad stuff at AMC* or Y&R, or later stints at ATWT. She's not Dixie and she's not trying to be. I will freely admit some of the other chances she took at other shows often came off stiff, hammy or downright mortifying (Kelly Andrews, come on down). (* - and I say that as one of the few who was somewhat into Cady trying to make Dixie more cosmopolitan in the Rosanna Cabot mold in mid-2000s AMC, just to liven the character up again)
    • There’s absolutely nothing exciting happening storyline wise but I’m always happy to see the vets on my screen so I’ll take what I can get. It’s also just nice to see them all dressed up in the same room, it always gives classic Y&R vibes. The best part? No Phyllis.
