GH: Nancy Lee Grahn acts a fool, makes Buzzfeed

There have only been 7 black women nominated in the best lead actress in a drama category (2 of which were first time nominees this year). That alone proves that Davis had a point that Grahn totally overlooked. The low number of nominations is not surprising, because leading parts for black actresses have simply never really existed. Even when you look at the comedy category, Isabel Sanford is the only black woman to win there and that was 34 years ago. There hasn't been a black actress even nominated in that category in 30 years.

So.  Much.  Truth.

I still remember, too, when Jackee won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for "227" and how big of a deal THAT was.  Aside from her and the girl from OITNB, though, how many WOC have even been nominated in that particular category, let alone have actually won it?  Because I really can't recall that many.

ETA: Oops, I was wrong about Uzo Aduba.  Her Emmys are for Outstanding GUEST (and not Supporting) Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.  Which makes Jackee the only AA to win her category...way the hell back in 1987.  Yeah, Viola Davis just read the industry.

The supporting category is fairly sparse for nominations and wins as well. The best category for black actress has been the movie/miniseries category, where five black actresses have won. Of course, a tv movie or miniseries is a one off performance that is different than the consistency of a series. Davis did a great job at calling out the lack of diversity.

I hope the rumors about the advertisers pulling out is true. Maybe then GH will cut its losses.

Advertisers pulling out? Really? This hardly seems to warrant that.

Maybe a win for all involved would be for more black actresses to be hired for real roles on GH? I don't care much about the status of NLG one way or another, but that might be a positive way to resolve the situation for ABC/GH.

hired AND written for as true leads. That's how you turn [!@#$%^&*] to sugar. But no daytime soap seem interested in any female leads anymore. Let alone black ones.

I keep thinking why didn't she just celebrate?

Because as long as she can move the goalposts she can ignore systemic racism & the part she plays in it.

Why apologize for something you meant? For me the apology ain't sh!t if you are backtracking.

I know this has ended now but I was reading DC's article on this and I had no idea Audra McDonald had tweeted, calling NLG a troll. Ouch.

damage control. Whether she meant it or not, she had to apologize. It would only make her look uglier if she didnt and i think even she realizes that

Which really bothers me.  Folks are supposed to say "Ok, she apologized...all is forgiven".  I'm so tired of this crap!

Yes, I cracked up when I read that!  So on point.

Nancy gets to steal Viola's spotlight and then play the victim?

Well, I guess Nancy now knows the truth about how people really are. She just needs to not let it get to her, because twitter is the only power that ratchet hoes have in the world.

Yeah, and us poor unfortunates certainly have her number!  She can go march for "Get The !@#$%^&*] Over Yourself".

Damn. This story is still hot and everyone is coming for her head. Nancy needs her bury her head in the sand for a LONG time.

But but but she's sorry...

  • Member

Sorry my ass. She's only sorry that this stunt has blown up in her face.

Exactly!  Narcissistic bitch!

That vid is stuck in my head, and I was even in the mirror at home practicing it yesterday :)

If Nancy is not the center of attention, she has a problem.  This one bothered her particularly because it was Viola's speech and how uncomfortable it made her.

yeah I remember unfollowing her for something she said that was highly offensive. I wish I could remember what it was though.

Well said Audra McDonald!
