There have only been 7 black women nominated in the best lead actress in a drama category (2 of which were first time nominees this year). That alone proves that Davis had a point that Grahn totally overlooked. The low number of nominations is not surprising, because leading parts for black actresses have simply never really existed. Even when you look at the comedy category, Isabel Sanford is the only black woman to win there and that was 34 years ago. There hasn't been a black actress even nominated in that category in 30 years.

7 actresses.. 11 different years.

Don't mind me--I'm just chilling here with my Liz Webber resting face, watching the rest of the world discover what I have known for years, even after certain liberals tried to come for me because I wasn't falling at her feet for sharing the same political affiliation.

Virginia Hamilton is never wrong when it comes to people

How long did it take you to realize Keith Hamilton Cobb liked to take it up the ass?

And your point is? It's not like you are saying anything factual that disproves the point that I was making about a lack of leading parts for black actresses.

I hope the rumors about the advertisers pulling out is true. Maybe then GH will cut its losses.

I hope they cut her before that happens, so we don't lose GH to NLG's crazy/drunk tweeting, although in a way it would be fitting.

Just for clarification.

So.  Much.  Truth.

I still remember, too, when Jackee won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for "227" and how big of a deal THAT was.  Aside from her and the girl from OITNB, though, how many WOC have even been nominated in that particular category, let alone have actually won it?  Because I really can't recall that many.

ETA: Oops, I was wrong about Uzo Aduba.  Her Emmys are for Outstanding GUEST (and not Supporting) Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.  Which makes Jackee the only AA to win her category...way the hell back in 1987.  Yeah, Viola Davis just read the industry.

Marla Gibbs, Lisa Bonet, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Paula Kelly, Alfre Woddard, Vanessa Williams, Jackee (of course), and Niece Nash.  For the record I always thought Shirley Hemphill and Lawanda Page should have gotten nomintations as well.

Advertisers pulling out? Really? This hardly seems to warrant that.

If you ask me (and yes, I know you didn't), NLG's comments last night just bring to light something that AA women have been saying for decades -- that for all their talk about equality, many Caucasian women who consider themselves feminists are no better than the redneck fools of this world who would rather see us return to the back of the bus.

I hope the rumors about the advertisers pulling out is true. Maybe then GH will cut its losses.

Don't worry, that paragon of tolerance, Ms. Melissa Reeves, is on the horn to see whether Chik-Fil-A could throw a little love toward GH's way.

I keep thinking why didn't she just celebrate?  Fantastic actress with strong writing and performances being recognized in a category filled with awesome.  Instead she decided to truly not be progressive during a watershed moment in her industry.

She seemed at last to realize her mistake, and apologize.  But who wants to listen to it after some of the tweets she made before she recognized how bad it was by that point.

outspoken can come back to bite you.

Maybe a win for all involved would be for more black actresses to be hired for real roles on GH? I don't care much about the status of NLG one way or another, but that might be a positive way to resolve the situation for ABC/GH.

Because the brown liquor can mess with some people's minds like nobody's business.

Better yet?  Replace NLG on GH...with an AA actress.  ;)

The supporting category is fairly sparse for nominations and wins as well. The best category for black actress has been the movie/miniseries category, where five black actresses have won. Of course, a tv movie or miniseries is a one off performance that is different than the consistency of a series. Davis did a great job at calling out the lack of diversity.
