Yes they do. That's what defenders of bad cops refuse to acknowledge. These people become cops because it gives them a chance to indulge their sadism and power tripping without fear. Just like pedophiles often put themselves in positions where they have access to children who need attention. Nobody gets so set off they fake a suicide.

Hell, yes. For once I actually agree with AG. Doesn't matter who's right, you have to obey the scary man with the gun when you are pulled over. That's simple survival, imo. Minorities are more at risk, no doubt about that. None of us are really safe from them though. When I was a teenager, my best friend and I got a nice taste of how power crazy some of these guys are. The way I see it, you can be right or you can go home alive/unhurt.

I actually had no idea any sane person ever challenged police when they are pulled over, until my husband told me a story about how he did once. Ideally, that would obviously be ok, but I've never considered it a viable option. Now that I'm a middle aged white woman (shine is off the penny and all that) I feel a little safer when I'm pulled over, but I still wouldn't risk engaging one of these guys in a debate. Fight the ticket in court, if you want to fight it.

I have to say that you need to be very careful if you get stopped by the police. With body cameras being equipped on officers in a lot of jurisdictions now, there are officers who are going to be on better behavior because there will be recordings of incidents.

New information out, video surveillance in the jail shows that nobody walked near or past her cell in the time leading up to her being disovered dead. Obviously her family didn't REALLY know what was going on with her. And the whole argument started when she wouldn't put out her cigarette. REALLY? You gonna give a cop lip over something that petty?

The real argument started the minute he pulled her over for such a petty violation. When you see a black and white speeding up behind you, it's a gut reaction to get out of its way. For her to be pulled over for not signaling in that very understandable circumstance was just petty. I live off of two major thoroughfares and day after day, night after night, I see these cops speeding without sirens like little boys in go karts. It is so unnecessary and it makes me nervous. If they need to reach such speeds in order to quickly respond to an emergency, they need to cut on their sirens. Otherwise, to me it just looks like people abusing their authority, and anyone willing to abuse his or her authority by racing up and down a major road is in my book just as willing to abuse his or her authority by pulling folks over at whim.

While getting angry and confrontational isn't really my style, I don't think that we should live in a world where we get punished, nay killed, for "giving lip". We have a right to be upset in the face of injustice. Sticks and stones.

That said, there are many ways that an officer can handle a situation. Look how the officer handled this one. If the man pulled over was black in 2015, he'd probably be dead.

I'm sorry, I have to be honest. She was looking for a fight from the very beginning and she got what she wanted. It all started out pretty calm and probably would have stayed that way if she had remained calm. I'm not saying the officer was right, but at the same time, the situation was helped any by the driver. These days everyone wants to be an activist and go viral, and she probably thought it would have been a good topic to discuss in a video.

Many are questioning why the arrest video released appeared to be altered:

http://www.cnn.com/videos/us/2015/07/22/sandra-bland-jail-cell-video-jump-cut-texas-lavandera-newday.cnn

The footage seems to be looped at certain points with some cars appearing and disappearing and appearing again, the video is chopped while the audio runs in a continuous stream.

I just read that the Texas department investigating that claim says that it wasn't edited. rolleyes.gif

Of the few times I've been pulled over by the police, I was a straight up smart ass. I don't know why but it just irritated me so bad. The cops never really fed into it though, which kinda surprised me. Then again, I'm a white dude, so...

Right, but that's my whole point. It's not about the world we should live in. It's about the world we do live in. Right here, right now the best thing to do is tread very carefully when you are pulled over. A person's only job when being stopped by an officer is coming out of it alive and unmolested. That's my feeling anyway.

Humans are dangerous animals, especially when they have the kind of power police have. I'm not even as anti police as I probably sound. There are a lot of dangerous criminals in the world. It's go to take a similar type of person to bring them to heel in many cases. Who else would want the job? Law enforcement is societies deal with the devil. Maybe we can make it better, but I doubt it can ever be a perfect system. The police officer who just shot an unarmed guy in the head was wearing a body cam for pity's sake.

Other countries (the ones that are not rife with corruption) do not seem to experience these types of issues with as much frequency as the U.S. When I mention other countries, I mean industrialized countries of similar socio-economic stratas like Canada and England.

Yes, but we have an insane gun culture here, those other places don't. Isn't it the UK where police don't even carry guns? Can you imagine that here? I live in freaking Omaha and we have gang issues and shoot outs.

As for corruption, I think you'd be pretty hard pressed to find a country that isn't knee deep in corruption and racism. Yes, the US is screwed up, but Europe has it's own problems (Jews, Muslims and Roma have a rough time in a lot of European countries even now). Sweden is generally seen as a model country and they were caught keeping lists of Roma, including children. After what happened in the Holocaust, I found that absolutely chilling. http://www.ibtimes.com/swedish-police-keep-secret-files-roma-gypsy-people-fighting-crime-or-ethnic-profiling-1495498

    • The original premise of "Santa Barbara" was that a Lockridge (Warren) killed a Capwell (Channing), who loved an Andrade (Santana), while a Perkins (Joe) went to jail for the crime. I think once the show started to pull away the threads by eliminating Joe and naming a new killer a lot of the show's original potential was lost. I contend, like others, that the fault lied in the uninspiring casting, which leads me to wonder if that's why the show became so keen on casting soap veterans for nearly every pivotal role.  The failure of the Perkins family was definitely a casting issue followed by a lack of interest in committing to the original onscreen characterization. I was fascinated watching the early episodes and realizing that the Perkins had been financially wiped out by the trial, which was an underlying current towards John's animosity towards his son. Then, the additional complication of Marissa's nearly incestual affection for Joe that led to her cutting off John sexually was a wild moment to witness, but not as strong as it could have been with a stronger actor in the role of John Perkins. Melissa Brennan wasn't the right choice for the aspiring young vixen that Jade was intended to be. Brennan may have breathed life into Laken, but I'm not sure how Julia Ronnie would have done in the role of Jade.  Despite the recorded history, Christina Robertson and Sarah Gallagher weren't sisters; they were aunt and niece.  I don't think it would have hurt to make Marissa and Augusta sisters, but I think it would have made the Joe / Augusta seduction impossible unless you truly mimick "Rituals" and make Joe Sarah's stepson. I think a childhood friendship between the two women would have worked. It would have also given Augusta someone to confide in about the situation involving Peter Flint and herself as Marissa would have been aware of Peter from her work at the pre school. As childhood friends that were estranged by class differences, I think a relationship between Augusta and Joe (and later Augusta and a sexually frustrated John) would have had multiple layers to play out giving a deeper impact on Augusta's involvement in both of the men in Marissa's life. And because I have thought about this all too much, I would have Augusta and Marissa square off again when Jade, after marrying Ted while pregnant, learned that the little Capwell heir was in fact an imprisoned Warren's son only for Augusta to ultimately keep mum because with Ted married to Jade he wasn't free to pursue Laken.  I imagine the Andrades would have slowly been withdrawn from the Capwell inner circle as the truth about Santana, Channing, Jr., and the baby came to light for everyone. In what I seen in the 1980s, Rosa confronts C.C. once about the baby and then seems to move on. Early in the run, the actor playing Reuben claims he and Bridget Dobson had a falling out and implied that she was racist which led to the character fading into the woodwork.  I know I am like maybe one of two people who liked the 1990s run of the Dobsons, but I loved the set up for Santana / C.C. with the Andrades having owned the land that Oasis sat on years earlier posing Santana to come into money while also potentially landing a position where she could raise Gina's son with C.C. if C.C. and Santana could have secured custody of the child. With Eden gone, I would have gone back to Santana and Cruz, but if not, I think Brick should have returned to be Santana's conscience and potential love interest.
    • Well, I'm not going to shoot you, so no worries there. If it's subpar i hate hearing that. It was an old DVD not even mine a former partner. I thought why not make use of it. Serves me right for thinking. But to be clear, white label, www.radiomemory.com
    • Just compared the open on Friday's episode with the first week episodes. I think the difference is that the bass line is much more apparent -- stronger and harder.
    • Phew, that was close to disaster!

I suspect we would have had a few withdrawals next year if Israel had won. I don't think many people would relish going to Jerusalem as things stand now. Not to mention it would have been a prime target for terrorist attacks.
    • And they've given us plenty. Sets, outdoor scenes, music licensing, etc. And that was the point of me using DAYS... so. It's obvious the casino set is not intended for long-term use, hence why it's likely it wasn't as evolved as the other community sets, etc.

    • I just had thought of how to save the Perkins family. (Inspired by Rituals) -- What if Marisa Perkins was Augusta Lockridge's sister? Fictionally, they could've both been local girls, one married rich and one married poor. Originally, I was going to suggest that Marisa be Sophia's sister, but then I realized Joe and Kelly would've been first cousins.  Of course, it would've truly inspired Sophia was if Rosa Andrade sister, with Rosa and Santana moving in to help CC raise the kids once Sophia disappeared.  While this could've avoided both gross CC and Santana affairs, the times were not right for a story about intersectional inequity.
    • https://www.instagram.com/p/DJxW5DLJLId/ Another World is my forever favorite soap opera. But it's finale is almost universally hated by its fans. What this is, is an edit where I've deleted everything I didn't like!!!
    • The Perkins family had potential to be a nice alternative to the more dysfunctional Capwells and wackier Lockridges... but I think a few factors did in the family. 1) Recasting of Joe Perkins 2) Bad casting of the Perkins Patriarch, and the one note writing for that character. 3) Lack of antagonistic interaction between the Capwells/Lockridges and Perkins.  (There was no awkwardness between Jade/Ted.. or CC disapproving of his son being friends with that Perkins girl, etc). 4) Wasting of Jade thus wasting the potential of the actress (which was realized on Days of Our Lives).  She had more potential than Laken oddly enough. The only member of the Perkins family that had appeal and a somewhat thought out story arc was Amy.
