Empire: Discussion Thread

I hope that these rumored reports about Jussie staging the attack are not true. I haven't heard anything about him being written out of Empire. Trai Byers was the one that I had been concerned would be written off the show, because on the fall finale Andre was shown flatlining. And throughout this season Lucious has been shown at a funeral of someone he cared about.

I had thought that person could be multiple people, including Kingsley. I hadn't thought it would be Jamal especially since his character already had a life and death scare on the show after he was shot, a couple of seasons ago.

I think Chicago PD is scared shitless on this and doesn't want to say anything public rn bc they have quite a (bad) reputation and it is a very very incendiary situation. If it was up to them I think they'd quietly bury it for the sake of PR and this is the last thing they want. But here we are.

I'd been following this quietly with growing dread for a week or two over the unanswered questions, but I still can't quite believe a major celebrity would do this in the age of 24-7 cameras and social media. If it's true, it's sick and grotesque and does immeasurable damage to so many civil rights causes in 2019. If it's false, several media outlets have a lot to answer for.

I had my own skepticism about the story, but my own counter-narrative was exactly that, why would he lie so extravagantly about something that could so easily be falsified with camera footage? Of course, I don’t know what’s going on in Jussie’s head, and people act foolishly all of the time.

And, yes, if these media outlets got it wrong (as they often do), they need their own reckoning.

    • I know there was one brief scene in the summer of 1989 where Lillian did mention Calla.. but in relation to her past relationship to Ross and it was to Roger while he was a patient at Cedars.  I think he was trying to pump her for information on Ross.. and for some reason, Calla's name came up.   I could see perhaps Beth mentioning that her mother Lillian was visiting Calla.. but not exactly giving any sort of details as to the going ons in Calla's life off screen.

    • They're neither great nor terrible AFAIK, but it is more a question of the streaming numbers in this day and age vs. actual TV airings. The Chibnall era reminded me much more of the crisis years, but I do think it's a very real possibility now as well due to the streaming bubble collapse affecting the show and its prospects.
    • ANYTHING to get her off the screen..she COULD have been interesting if she and Van had a few face offs..(there was a mild one of her going back to work...but I wanted something meatier "Bitch, I am Vanessa Chamberlain and I don't take advice from someone who followed the..career path you did!" I did like Alex's outright disdain for her.
    • Thanks @Vee for the commentary.    I haven’t even watched this season yet after  I couldn’t get past the couple episodes last season…like it was too Disneyified for my taste, although I did think it was a least better than the Chibnall era (but so is a lot of things). I’ll probably go back and binge it now. Hoping this season ends on a high note. I did read the ratings are terrible. As it stands I’m beginning to feel like what long time DW fans felt with S26 in 1989.
    • Yes, they are all on contract. Next.
    • I also never understood Alex's friendship with Sonni or keeping the secret of Marah's paternity.  Not exactly heartbroken about Ms. Sally being ushered to the Hereafter.

I'm sorry but I'm a glutton for punishment. Would love to see this woman OWNING the canvas. Telling off Leslie who tells her she's the head b!tch.
    • And in case anyone is confused; Rusty was hired by HB to work undercover and infiltrate some gang sabotaging Lewis.
