For whatever differences there might be between HAHN and AMC/OLTL, it's pretty safe to say that if HAHN aired in daytime, and daytime only, with little to no promotion, its ratings wouldn't be that much better than what the PP soaps are getting. That's just a fact of life when you're talking about the daytime television ghetto. If AMC/OLTL were packaged as hour-long episodes (kinda like the Monday double eps online) before and after HAHN on Tuesdays, i think they would have benefited greatly. It's a simple truth. Audiences are bigger at night.

Regarding the fact that viewers are hesitant to tune it I do think breaking into a soap is an art in its own right. Remember the NYT article/review when the shows first started and the guy claimed you have to read entire 80 page or so character back stories to understand the show?? Well, in all fairness that is the mindset. A lot of people I know won't watch because they think they have to do that. They don't understand that you watch for a week or two and get a feel for the characters. Patience is also involved. That said, most people watched when they were young or with there parents so they didn't have to "Break In". The first episode of any soap was the episode of AMC when trevor was found in the freezer. I love that episode. Before that I laughed and knocked soaps with the best of them. That has since changed. I did not watch again until the reunion of Jesse/Angie when they met at the train station and that is when I decided to do a little research and start watching full time in the summer. I became a loyal/die-hard during the tornadoes. Before then I really had know idea what was gong on!! I was not that consistent until then which is part of the reason why it took that long to become die hard but still my point is that I became engaged during 2 very important game changing episodes. So if you want the audience to get hooked give them a reason. Anniversaries are great and should be used as an introduction to a show but also showcase the show as well by bringing back fan favorites so old viewers will be interested. AMC's 25th is a perfect examples.

When I used words like "new" and "fresh", I wasn't speaking so much of content as I was of the show's age and people's perceptions. You'd be hard pressed to find anything truly fresh or original nowadays. Affairs, nasty characters, cheaters, etc. is nothing unique to THAHN. The only difference is that nobody's seen it in this context before, with these characters, in this town, etc. Plus, I do think people generally like coming into a brand new show, watching stories unfold in current time, knowing everybody else is at the same point in the story as you are. It's easier than starting to watch a show with decades of history that relates to what's happening now (like when David throws Jesse's past lies in his face or Dimitri talks to Brooke about their friendship from years ago)...people have to sort of "catch up" or "catch onto" that.

I agree that PP needs the right sort of promos to lure in new eyeballs. The Debbi Morgan idea is great, plus she is arguably the most recognizable actor from the current AMC, someone who has been seen on various tv shows and films for decades. (They may not know her name but they know that face!) Honestly, if I was PP (and maybe I'm being really presumptuous here), I would put away my personal aversion to stunt casting or cameos for the immediate future, find out which non-soap actors or entertainers made a popular appearance in the past or someone who has broad appeal and recognition (not teenybopper boy bands those of us over 25 and who don't have kids have never heard of) and beg them to work for cheap to put in an appearance. For instance, not necessarily Carol Burnett per se but someone broadly recognized (being a proclaimed fan of the show doesn't hurt) that would make a non-AMC watcher say, oh, I like that actor or entertainer, I may have to check this show out. I know, it goes against the show making it on its own merits but they've tried it already with the singers they've had on--I just think it maybe should be done with folks who have broader fame.

Somehow, some way, the old lady needs to catch the eye of new people as if she were a hot young chick. I can't believe I'm actually saying that but desperate times call for desperate measures! tongue.png

I don't see where PP has any aversion atall to stunt casting. OLTL did tons of it: Corbin Bleu on contract, JWOWW on recurring, Snoop Lion did a week/month of appearances, there was that Jesse/Dusky chick (I didn't know who she was but I'm old) and that white guy with the cornrows (he was famous, right? Again, I'm old.). AMC had Hot Chelle Rae and Jason Derulo as musical guests. Short of casting Betty White as Ghost Grandma Kate or having Neil Patrick Harris wandering through PV hospital as Doogie Houser Hayward, how much more stunt casty can they get?

No one really knows who Jesse Malakouti was. What matters is she disappeared from OLTL after the first several weeks. Thank God.

As for Riff Raff, he was terrible and fantastic. From what I can understand he is some sort of...pimp?...real life pimp? or something? Who James Franco based his character in Spring Breakers off of. In retaliation, Riff Raff was keen on his OLTL character being named "Jamie Franko". He was only on for one day but every moment was glory. I could've watched that guy torment the characters for months. Like old school Matthew Cowles.

I was horrifed when I first saw Riff Raff and just kind of stunned that that was really happening on OLTL but I rewatched that ep a few times because I loved the I Got You Babe montage and found myself laughing hysterically and enjoying immensely. Its probably one of my fave eps of the reboot. I actually think keeping him around recurring could have helped give Cutter and maybe eventually Nat and Rama more to do than they had. Dusky on the other hand I was thrilled to see evaporate into think air. Though I did find myself singing White Girl Wasted for weeks.

    • Annnnd it's time!!!   Oooo more developing of the Anita story.   Bill and these hand moments.   OOOOOOOOO...it's a Jazmen episode!!!   So Nicole is hitting the anger part of her grief, I see.    Hehe. TIDE sighting!!
    • -- Kai spends more time in the hospital than anyone I know. I've never seen a patient held back from being discharged like this guy. -- All this concern over Lulu's adoption story is wild. Just what in the hell in that story will upset people? Am I missing something?
    • Except she was the last to know yesterday
    • While I'm waiting for the new episode to start...let's talk about yesterday's episode.   I honestly really loved it. THIS is what I mean when I talk about how there should be an A story that is dealing with its fallout while the next A story is being built. And then there was even a C plot going on.    The fallout from the Silk Press Sheila/Eva reveal continued. And there were so many elements in play. Beats were being played. And I loved every moment of it. Ted/Eva defiantly going to the country club and being more successful at it than Bill&Hayley. I love that Ted is willing to fight for his marriage. I really want to see where it goes. I didn't like the town gossip, cuz we already have one in Nosy Nurse, but she did keep the tension up. The Nicole/Dani dynamic as sisters being in play...and I'll be in the minority and say that while Dani was Dani, I didn't find her being self-absorbed at all in those scenes. She has already been established as being willing to go there. For herself. AND her sister. So her going in on Ted and Eva was like her. Her dragging her sister out of the house was also like her. No problems. And I can't say how much I loved Jan getting her moment with Silk Press Sheila. Not to mention how much I LOOOOOOVE the showdown between SilkPress and Eva at Orpheny Gene in front of everybody!!!! Giving old school soap. And SilkPress's warning she got more up her sleeve (with a snap) was delicious. And awww at Martin comforting Eva. Kat ain't going to like that.   Speaking of Martin...IT'S HAPPPPENIIIIINGGGGGG!!! Now we are getting words from the night in question. So good to see them FINALLY building out that OTHER A story they started. And good on Martin for backing out from the presidency. I already said I love that the writers found a plausible reason for him to back out. The plot point served its purpose...to get a sense of Martin's personality. Now that he's been built up so we know what to expect from him, no need for it. Moreso since SilkPress's presence will continue to trigger that secret right out of him. Fingers crossed.   And while all that goodness was going on...we got a B plot in the form of Doug/Joey/Vanessa. I like it. It's been allowed to grow. All POVs have been seen except for Joey's really. So seeing him put Doug on the hook officially (so this should be climaxing by end of May then since Doug has one week?) because he wants Doug to move money through Vanessa's business. I continue to wonder where it will go now that I know (and apparently missed it) what Joey's endgame is. I mean...will Doug do it? Will Joey get payback on Vanessa? Or will Vanessa fall into Joey's bed? I feel the show has done a good job developing Doug and Vanessa enough that I am invested in the story. Sidenote...ask and I shall receive aka Dani/Vanessa brief moment at the country club. I really miss them together.    As for the C plot...well...I'm in the minority as well. I actually liked the Ashley/Derek scenes. Not cuz the typical soap himbo scenes...lol...but it was just a nice counterpoint from the other stories going on. And it was just nice to have an episode with A, B, and C stories going on and NOT be jarring and ALSO no quick cuts to another scene. It FLOWED. I actually like Ashley and while her last appearances in solo Derek scenes were DOA, I felt there was more going on. At least this time. It was building on what was already growing...Ashley's annoyance at Derek moving in. Derek...being a typical guy. I am hoping that will go somewhere. And I love that we got another Jan/Ashley scene. At the moment, it's the only thing giving us a clue to Ashley's inner life. That said...I really do want to see her out of her story bubble. There's so much potential with her and her career as a nurse. Moreso given what's going on there.    As for the mysterious stranger...well...I wonder how they are going to play it. Since most of us (but not all so not discussing it farther) know a bit about him.    As for the coda...it is bittersweet now knowing it was Maurice's last scenes. I mean...what do you all think? A nice point for him to stop? We got to see Eva accepting by the father she always wanted to be with since Day 1. Nicole looks on. Quite soapy.
    • I love the thought of Eva becoming this huge celebrity hairstylist, and the future character crossover that can happen with fun cameos, too.
    • I assume the target audience is as distracted as I am by the plot hole that University Hospital does not own a means of production for Versavix, and that's where the profits are found. Researchers at publicly funded universities can profit from successful drug discoveries, but it is often a small percentage compared to the profits of the pharmaceutical company.  Thus, it makes no sense why both Xander and EJ would try to buy the hospital (and its right to the invention).  As opposed to buying a pharmaceutical company, which would make exponentially more profit from Versavix, as well as the many patents that they now own on Dr. Rolf's research!   And, that if Xander benefitted from his wife's knowledge about a drug being researched at her hospital, and one day later he made a bid for said hospital, that's called fraud as it is akin to insider trading. For example, if my husband was a real estate agent, and he told me to buy this undervalued property because he knew there was a $1,000,000 diamond buried under the toilet.  That would be fraud, because his duty would be to get the best price for his client.  But, if he would directly profit, because as my husband he would get half of the profits from the diamond, that's fraud.  And that's what Sarah did. She waited until the hospital was worth nothing to tell her husband to buy now for cheap, because it will be worth a fortune in future because of the drug. Thus, she profits from the University's misfortune.  And once again, Sarah is the true evil mastermind of Salem.

    • Some other thoughts on today's show. I don't care for Bill/Hayley as a couple. I think that Bill is sexy and looked good on today's show. But I don't think that him and Hayley really have any chemistry. They seem mostly isolated on the show unless someone like Dani is sparring with one of them. I do wonder what is going on with Bill's hand and why it is trembling. He is trying to keep that from Hayley. I also don't care for June right now. I like Jacob/Naomi but would rather see them do something else than what they are currently doing with June right now.  I liked Nicole/Dani continuing to support one another after the fallout from their marriages. I think it's interesting that Nicole asked Dani if something was going on between her and Andre and Dani lied about it. I do wonder if Dani/Andre are starting to have stronger feelings for each other (maybe even falling for each other a little bit). It does seem like stronger feelings are developing between them and I wonder where that may lead for their storyline. And I enjoyed Anita/Vernon as well. I like that he supports her and wants her to do the reunion with the Articulettes. It does seem like at one of them really doesn't want much to do with her after she reached out on today's show. But maybe they will reunite and there will be drama between her and her bandmates. I am interested in seeing who the show may cast as her bandmates. I hope they get a couple of good actresses in the role.
    • Looks like the Townhouse to me, I've been calling it Paulina's Townhouse (which Marlena and Kayla also use).
    • Angela Bassett was also on somewhere in 1985 wasn't she. The NY soaps did so much for struggling actors. That's one of the reasons I will never stop hoping we get more of them.
