DAYS: June 2013 Discussion Thread

Another good week of Days. The momentum has slowed to a more normal pace but the dialogue and writing and still spot on.

1) Marlena/Adrienne scenes at the beginning of week = Amazing!! Love these two actresses.

2) Also love the continued cast interaction interwoven amongst all the cast: great inter-connected scenes this week from Jennifer/Marlena, Abby/Sonny, Brady/Eric, Sami/Eric, Chad/EJ, Will/Adrienne, Jennifer/Brady

3) Again: Shawn Christian is SO much more tolerable in a supporting role. I still would rather him be let go and them use the money to get Shawn/Belle back on our screens. But I can handle Dr. Dan is such small doses of supporting roles.

4) Just me or did Jim Reynolds look so distinguished and professional wearing glasses. Abe should be in glasses more often.

5) I don't know if this was intentional or not, but funniest line of the week was Nick's line to Kate: "You can't fire me!!! I have a contract!"..... I don't know if that line was meant to be funny or not.. But just the fact that the writers made a soap actor utter that line made me literally LOL. :)

On a side note: I'm looking forward to seeing the Horton Kitchen. Isn't it supposed to first appear in June? Is it this upcoming week?

For me they are writing Kristen into a corner. I can't get behind a character that rapes someone. It just doesn't sit well. I like Kristen when she is doing bad things, but not like this, this just crossed a line. I am hoping that Nicole doesn't catch them and Kristen freaks out enough that she puts a stop to this and realises it isn't a good idea. Still not happy they are taking her down this path even if they don't end up having sex.

Yeah you are right. She hypnotised John into having sex, but I guess they were in a relationship and he was willing to sleep with her but didn't because the doctor told them it would harm the baby (which she had miscarried). I don't even know what to call that, I guess it is along the same lines. Confusing, as that scenario isn't something I can even relate to real life in any way.

I don't know, the Eric thing seems worse, and if Kristen was telling the truth about being a sex slave on the island, then it just seems more disturbing. They have added too much depth to the characters and more realism (than has been on Days in a long time anyway) so this seems so 90's JER Days, which doesn't fit.

I have to say I never liked Nina on Y&R for raping Phillip and I never will (especially because she has gotten away with it her whole fictional life)

Kristen is fundamentally broken. What happened to her baby and Johm years ago and the island stuff destroyed her. She's been able to rebuild her life but she hasn't completely recovered and seemed to only mask her deeper issues which Brady helped her to be a better person (despite not having the best intentions initially). Without him I think it's been easier to fall into old wreck less patterns and not care of the consequences. She views herself as damaged goods and so many people around her including now Brady are telling her that. So in her mind she's living up to that and doesn't care what anyone thinks. If she has to lose everything then she might as well get that revenge she originally set out for. That's her driving motivation now. It makes sense to me

I think Kristen is a totally viable character. Her rape of Eric doesn't write her into a corner at all. Now, hopefully she isn't paired with Eric following it, but that's really the only thing I can't buy with her after this. I can still buy Brady being in love her should he ever learn she raped Eric honestly. I just hope that when the truth comes out the is some story of Eric dealing with being raped and what does that mean and it isn't glossed over.

It's a great turn of events in the story and in line with Kristen's character and her obsession and need to hurt Mar.

Man, that Kristen is killing me today. I haven't enjoyed watching a crafty divixen at work this much since '90s Dorian Lord. I cracked up when she collected her TWO digital cameras (two times the angles and backup!) which she left in plain sight, not even concealed by a couple of hand towels. Of course Eric was too out of it to even notice, but still. And then when she came out of the bathroom in that f#*% me dress and dark wig looking like Serena off of Bewitched, oh my God...

DaytimeFan, I thought of you while watching today... I totally get your thing for Lauren Koslow. She's pretty exquisite. Not only does she have one of the most interesting faces in daytime, but I dig her look, which is sort of classic in a funky deconstructed way. I wonder what Cheap thinks of the hair, but I like it at any rate. She's one of the truly believable examples in the MILF/GILF category that these soaps are always trying to sell.

Carl, this is going to take some getting used to! But DRW50 is pretty bad ass, sounds like a biological weapon used by the government. I saw that it's in honor of Who's 50th, so I'm tempted to call you DR.Carl as some sort of compromise.

In the case of Cameron/Chad, I can't help but think that yet another handsome man of color on the soaps is going to lose the white girl to the white guy.

It's too bad that Eileen Davidson's best opportunity to show the world what a killer body she has (why does she always look so dowdy on Y&R?) comes with a drug rape storyline.

Why is Nicole styled like an aging country singer from 1996?

    • So many things would have had to be different for Mary to want to go back to Reginald. It could have been interesting if it had been handled completely differently but as it was we had a very black and white Mary good/Reginald bad. If she had been able to ignore his worldly crimes and how he treated his own children there was still the fact that he had separated her from her children. Maybe if they had shown us more intimacy and affection between them and had allowed him to have real vulnerabilities it could have worked but as it played out they didn't do much to present him with any sympathetic hook. There are a lot of ways to define wanting things to work. Fans are mostly thinking of preserving or restoring characters and an atmosphere that drew them to the show. The sponsor may only be thinking of the bottom line. When a producer or HW comes in and decides that their vision will deliver for the bottom line and they need to fire most of the cast in order to do it it can feel very much like not caring.
    • I remember this getting a lot of criticism at the time.
    • Maeve breaks me reading that letter. If you ever need to cry, look it up. Other than the dopey line about Henry wanting to come home to Van's rice (or tapioca) pudding (VANESSA CHAMBERLAIN DOES NOT COOK, Y'all...) it's a sweet sign-off to one of the best father/daughter relationships on soaps. Other than Ross, and Bill (if he says something, which I assume he does) and the letter, the rest of it is BS. I haven't watched it in a while, but it typifies what I dislike most about events that should be laden in history. The writers are too lazy to do the work and get it right. And it becomes about making sure characters X, Y and Z make their guarantees. Roger being there is an abomination. Henry never ever saw Nola as a gold-digger. She and Quint were practically engaged before he even knew Quint was his son. Before that, he was fairly close to Bea and enjoyed Nola's spirit. And Henry never helped Rick become an Eagle Scout.  I get that maybe you don't want to play Amanda#1 or Dinahs 1&2, or Billy, Trish or Alan #1 clips, but damn it....don't make stuff up. I'd have much rather watched clips from Henry, Vanessa and Ross' early days than Rick blather on, or nuMichelle try and dig for a human-like emotion or wonder why after TEN YEARS, Dinah and Quint have never met.   Do not remember anyone named Tina. I barely remember Dahlia, and that's mostly because for a while, I saw Sharon Leal in everything after she left GL.   Reva and Josh airhogs? ALWAYS, darling. ALWAYS. RME. I hate to tar and feather Robert Newman with that brush, but DAMN.
    • Oooooooooooooo a Jazmen script off of a Sara Bibel breakdown.    I'm intrigued. Lol. Yeah, one thing I can say for sure...when SilkPress is about to have a crazy moment, they do give her music.
    • I am so happy now. Reminds me of the 80s show I loved. Ron really did the cast and fans dirty. The only people complaining are those who only knew Ron and his whiplash plot driven stories
