Today, Thomas and Bell are launching a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a low-budget Mars movie that would be shot this summer. The goal: $2 million in 30 days. If they reach it, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution has agreed to put the movie into production and pick up the tab for marketing, promotion, and distribution. (The film would be released in the first quarter of 2014 for a limited-time theatrical run, before moving to VOD, iTunes, and other digital platforms.) If they don’t reach the goal: No movie.

Thomas tells Entertainment Weekly in an exclusive joint interview this week (click here to buy the issue) with Bell that the Kickstarter strategy represents the only way a Veronica Marsmovie was ever going to get made: Warner Bros. had previously determined that a film with a bigger budget and a conventional marketing plan was too expensive and not viable for the studio.

Less than 11 hours after Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell announced a Kickstarter campaign, fans have raised the $2 million necessary to finance a Veronica Mars movie. It’s officially on!

The goal was to raise $2 million in 30 days. Warner Bros. Digital Distribution has agreed to put the movie into production and pick up the tab for marketing, promotion, and distribution. But exhibiting a passion that broke Kickstarter records in just six hours, fans have been flocking to the site since the page went up at 7:30 a.m. PT.  And even though the goal has been reached, pledges can keep coming in.

Here is the kickstarter page - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/559914737/the-veronica-mars-movie-project - the stats are pretty interesting, more people donated the larger sums than the smaller amounts. The guy who bid the highest amount isnt even a huge fan, he just likes backing projects?! Like what even.

This is awesome.

kickstarter is such an awesome creation.

I love these options:

Kristen Bell will record up to a 15 second outgoing voicemail message for you. You can decide what the message will say within the bounds of good taste. We’ll also provide a few standard greetings from which you can choose. You’ll be sent this as an mp3.

A cast member of your choice (Kristen excluded) will record up to a 20 second personalized video greeting for you. You can decide what the message will say within the bounds of good taste. Remember, these could be floating around YouTube for eternity. Our cast members have to be comfortable with what they’re saying on camera.

Name a character in the movie! You will hear this character’s name said out loud at least one time in the movie. We guarantee this name will make the final cut. NOTE: we must be able to clear this name through our legal department. This is much easier if you are naming the character after yourself. It’s much trickier if you’re naming it after the person who used to beat you up in elementary school who is now a local politician in the Southern Californian setting of Veronica Mars.

You will get a speaking role in the movie. Here’s the scene — Veronica is eating with the man in her life. Things have gotten tense between them. You are the waiter/waitress. You approach the table, and you say, “Your check, sir.” We guarantee you will be on camera as you say the line. Unless you go all hammy and ruin the scene and we have to cut you out, but that would be a sad day for all of us. Just say the line. Don’t over-think it. You’re a waiter. Your motivation is to turn over the table.

Looking forward to the movie.

Additional cast members have since been announced.

Francis Capra (Weevil), Percy Daggs III (Wallace), Tina Majorino (Mac), Chris Lowell (Piz) and Krysten Ritter (Gia). There's also some bit parts as well from the series like the girl that played Madison Sinclair is on (granted that was a given from the script teaser Thomas had posted way back when) and Susan Knight is on (idk why, wasn't she on one ep. but I guess if you have a HS reunion they have to be added).

This amazing piece was posted and I am in love with it.

The movie is out in theaters. At my theater all the showings were sold completely out yesterday. The movie was really very good I thought. Lots of laughs and cheering from everyone at my showing. I am hopeful that maybe lightning will strike and maybe we can someday get another movie out of this.

Hopefully, it'll be better than "Serenity." As a fan of the original series ("Firefly"), I was REALLY disappointed with how Joss Whedon handled that one.

Omgyes! Veronica Mars was a gem!! Thanks for posting, can't wait! By the way, I never want to see Lisa Rinna on tv or on film ever again.

I loved the movie, but then again they said that VM fans would love it.

It also makes me want more. :(
