"Columnist" Michael Musto Craps On Daytime Drama

Writers like Sheffer, Guza, Pratt, and yes Carlivati and his turning OLTL into a soap parody have done more damage to soaps than the 'mainstram' press. None of those 4's stories or versions of their shows ever garnered one ounce of mainstream respect writers like Labine, Nixon, Marland, Lemay or Bell did even when soaps were looked down on..

Agreed. Daytime stopped taking itself seriously in the days that Marlena's eyes glowed yellow, and Reva Shayne suddenly had a clone.

Soaps were/are seen as primarily women's entertainment; women, for all their advancements in society, are still viewed by many males as second class citizens, thus their entertainment is "second class" or "crap." Not so for all the men and their sports (NASCAR, NFL, etc.), though. Yet another double-standard.

YEP. Men watch cars going around in circles for hours, build "fantasy leagues" and have an entire "sport" scripted...and have multiple magazines and channels dedicated to them, 24/7/365. But let women spend an hour a day with a serial, and somehow it's just "crap".

I think that was most noticeable in the acres and acres of newsprint trying to find relevance in The Sopranos years after most of the people involved seemed to stop caring.

A few months ago I wrote that “General Hospital” would kill off Robin Scorpio, played by Kimberly McCullough she since was a child. Well, they did it. There is a lot of mail on this subject. But last week, “GH” reached an all time low in ratings. This isn’t by happenstance. ABC is getting ready to say goodbye to its last soap in time to debut Katie Couric in September. McCullough says she left to become a director, which may be true. But “GH” and ABC are following the plan laid by Procter and Gamble a couple of years ago. They got rid of the young demographic actors on “As the World Turns” and “Guiding Light.” It’s one thing to kill off old characters on a soap. But when you start killing the young female characters with big fan bases, that’s a sign the show is over.

ABC’s big problem is that the two shows they replaced “All My Children” and “One Life to Live”–”The Chew” and “The Revolution”–are unwatchable. So now what? The wheels are in motion to end “General Hospital,” on the air since Lyndon Johnson was president. There will be a lot of mail, but the network doesn’t care. This is cost cutting. Just as with the two other shows, they want “GH” off the air. Maybe they’ll go really retro and bring back The Afternoon Movie, in black and white. Or drag over programming from Lifetime. But Tuesday was the pivotal day for “GH.” Sorry, fans. (Ratings are from tvbythenumbers.com) PS McCullough has directed a new short film, listed on the Internet Movie Data Base, and has appeared in what looks like a direct to video film. But she’s talented, and there’s nowhere to go but up.

That's nothing, just a little sarcastic bit of fluff from Michael Musto, there's no need to put columnist in quotes, that's what he is and a well known one at that in New York.

Exactly. He just did a piece on why he hates Broadway theatre that, if taken seriously, would mean he wouldn't have enjoyed any Broadway show since Show Boat in 1927

There will be a lot of mail, but the network doesn’t care.

Wait, there are people who will take the time to write a letter to save this show?

Color me surprised.

That's crapping on daytime? We do worse here on the board on a daily basis? That column seemed rather tame and nothing too upsetting

I totally agree with u..I think we as fans sew way harsher

I didn't realize Michael Musto was still alive, so given that career status I'm not going to bother getting too offended. I mean, it's Michael Musto. Who next, Flo Anthony?

ATWT killed off one popular or somewhat popular younger female character in its last years - Jennifer. The actress wanted to leave.

GL killed off one popular younger female character in its last years - Tammy. The actress wanted to leave.

I don't understand how this was supposed to have meant the death of ATWT and GL.

If they were just using this as some example, they could have chosen a hell of a lot better one.
