Roger, thanks so much for the Bauer set, mainly because we finally get the "blue sky" GL opening with the lighthouse. Simple yet elegant, with the theme music obviously still played in studio. La Lumiere is such a gorgeous song, both organ and orchestra.

I can vouch for finding things in the strangest places. Dan Curtis Productions was looking for Dark Shadows tapes about a decade ago and that's when they unearthed Peter Marshall episodes of Hollywood Squares that supposedly had been destroyed. You never know what you'll find. :)

You're lucky. I pre-ordered mine and it didn't ship out until last Saturday. Since you have yours, could you confirm exactly when in 1979 the episodes begin?

From the Amazon.de description, it looks like there's 25 episodes on 5 dual-layer discs. It would be nice if they started using these discs on future B+B releases, then we could get 50 episodes at a time.

Now that they've started to release GL episodes, here's hoping they do California Clan (Santa Barbara) next.

Wasn't it reported the SB masters were destroyed or something? I truly hope not as I would LOVE for SB to come to DVD. But between the master tapes issue and music stuff (though, perhaps, music issues are less stringent internationally), I don't hold out much hope there. But I would dearly love to be wrong!

I have just opened my German GL DVD pack!!!! And it is WONDERFUL.....

The quality and sound is 10/10. It contains 5 DVDs with a total of 21 episodes + bonus!!!!!

They are in German and in English. Each episode has the opening ( the one from 1979) you can hear the voice and now Guiding Light...and next you can see the German opening with the name and image of the main characters in 1979. We can also see at the end the English closing and next the German one. Those episodes were broadcast in Germany in 1981 with stories from 1979...

I have just seen the first episode and Roger is in Paris and phones to Alan, because he wants to come back to Springfield....

With the 5 DVDs, we also can find a booklet of 32 pages with pictures and the story of Guiding Light...a lot of information...the problem is that the booklet is obviously in German! But it is really nice....

And about the bonus....in the 5th DVD, we have a bonus section with the great episode of 1973 (Episode number 6569)!!!!! ( in fact there is a great explanation of this episode in the booklet). The episode is only in English with German subtitles and finally there is a trailer of GL only in German... only three minutes with the best moments of all the episodes we have in the DVD pack.

Finally, I think it has been a great purchase for me..... I love this DVD pack because it has been made with love and loyalty to the fans!!! I recommend it!!!!! People who love classic episodes will love this DVD set....and it is only the first one.... I guess that they will release more DVD packs of GL.....

    • Santa Cruz Sentinel, 5 November 1981 What is Mel Ferrer doing in a late-night soap opera? Having fun, he insists. If Elizabeth Taylor can make a guest appearance on "General Hospital," why can't Ferrer star in "Behind the Screen"? He's doing just that each Friday on CBS's answer to Johnny Carson. "Behind the Screen" may be the ultimate in the peculiar art that has spread from the daylight hours into prime time ("Dallas," "Flamingo Road") and now into the insomnia period. The new once-a-week half-hour is a soap opera about a soap opera. The cast: Ferrer, a powerful Hollywood promoter; Janine Turner, star of the serial "Generations" and victim of Ferrer's manipulation; Joanne Linville, her crippled, ambitious mother; Michael Sabatino, a serious actor slumming in "Generations;" Joshua Bryant, his father and producer of the series; and more. "When they sent me the script," said Ferrer, "I was immediately interested because David Jacobs' name was on it. David created 'Dallas,' and I am a mad 'Dallas' fan. I think Larry Hagman has made a creative and inventive character out of J R. and I have an eye for Sue Ellen (Linda Evans)." Ferrer discovered that taping a halfhour weekly show is no easy chore. The "Behind the Screen" cast rehearses at CBS Television center on Friday, tapes on Saturday and Sunday. Reason for the weekend taping: "Behind the Screen" uses the stage occupied by "Archie Bunker's Place" during the week. The series came along at just the right time for him, Ferrer said. "I had been living in Switzerland and making three pictures a year Italian, Spanish, French, German, English," he explained. "Production in Europe has become very tight, except in Germany. In Italy there is very little money to finance films. "So it seemed like a good time to resurface here. I have an avocado and lemon ranch in Carpinteria (80 miles northwest) that I wanted to look after. And I'm developing 'Peter Pan' at Paramount." Ferrer has long held the film rights to the James Barrie classic, once planned it for his then-wife Audrey Hepburn. For a time Mia Farrow was to star. Now producer Ferrer has a revolutionary idea: Peter Pan will be played by a boy. "But not Ricky Schroeder," he added. "I have already talked to Ricky, but he is already too old to play Peter. "I have seen all the Peters in recent times Jean Arthur, Mary Martin, Sandy Duncan. While they are wonderful, they are not what Barrie intended. Our film will be done from the original play, not as a musical comedy."
    • Yes we have seen Dani/Andre, Doug/Vanessa, Ashley/Derek and Naomi/Jacob in bed but no Martin/Smitty. And Chelsea's 3 way involvement has consisted of about 3 scenes at the Hideout before it was over.
    • Thanks Bold!  You finally have your first year of YR ratings coming, which completes the ratings for the entire run of YR! I look forward to the day that happens with Days in the 1965-1966 batch, but that will probably be a few years away. A lot of work, but a lot of fun chronicling the history of daytime TV ratings, preemptions and specials!!

    • Well, no new episode tomorrow, but you should do a catch up. It's worth it!
    • *Gavrilo Princip has entered the chat* I haven't watched BTG in approximately two months because of the busy season at work, but now it's summer, and I'll have time to get back into it. Do y'all think that I should do the 21st century binge-watching thing and attempt to catch up on everything I missed or should I do the traditional soap thing and just start watching again tomorrow and figure everything out from there?
    • A few days late but this made me holler so bad and immediately took.me back 29 years when I first saw this. I still remember thinking Rick and Phillip were going hold each other and dance together LOL. Rick being there at least makes some sense as he was A-M’s second cousin and the show still at least recognized he was half Bauer, at least until Hearst left.  The whole Universal Studios wedding was over the top. I think someone wanted A-M and Lucy to be the next GL super couple but once Hearst left the A-M recast flopped and both were gone by early ‘97 with Lucy never appearing ever again.    Love the rest of your post, summer 1996 was the first time GL left me feeing…greatly underwhelmed until it inspired righteous indignation on my behalf once we get to the Gilly twist.
    • You're right. I think she was seen as too subtle or reserved.  As @soapfan770I liked Sheila on LA Law but she wasn't needed here, especially as Charley as a character only made sense with a more reserved and less conventionally attractive actress.
    • That's certainly one way to put it!  What blather. Kind of tells you they knew it was going to fail. I guess they were just throwing anything at the schedule and hoping they would be pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the article.
    • I would guess it's down to Kate Oates. Bowden is very much her type of leading man. She repeated all the stories she did on Emmerdale with his Ben.  I also think EE has become conservative enough that only a white, straight-acting gay man is going to get story.
