The strange thing is that both Saul and Darla were not added to the opening until 1993.
Darla was bumped to recurring in 1996 and was removed from the opening with the December 1996 update. Saul must have been taken off contract in 1995 (months before the actor's death).

A few other short-lived contract roles weren't added to the opening at all during the first few years of the show.
From 1993 on, I think every contract role appeared on the opening at least for a short while, even some of the child actors (the pre-Jacob Young Rick and the pre-Jennifer Finnigan Bridget). They started updating the credits more often with up to 4 different versions each year.

Isn't that shame too? B&B was so on fire 1997-1998, from Eric & Stephanie's wedding disaster, Grant's theft(well, it was HIS own designs!) from Forrester and showing up at Spectra in retaliation against Brooke and the Forresters doing him wrong, the fashion show in Italy complete with Stephanie's revenge against Sally at Lake Como, Sheila pushed to suicide and jumped off the roof in her wedding dress, and of course Brooke & Taylor having each risen the stakes between Taylor's pregnancy and of course Brooke's fake pregnancy and fake miscarriage.

At the 412 episode mark..I can see why Katie was phased out..her arc since #1 was concluding with her having confidence and a guy asking her out.  Plus her character was removed from her the business aspect.  Brooke was dating a Forrester, Donna was modeling, and Storm  was an attorney...so they had ties.

Shame the show didn't pursue Margo and Storm.

A lot of the Taylor, Ridge, Thorne, Brooke stuff is still up on (the main focus of the clips is Taylor and Ridge though). It's unfortunate that full episodes or stuff for other characters isn't up anywhere.

Boy is it hard looking at how entertaining the show was in 1997-1998 and how it became awful rubbish by 2002-2003

For me Brooke was such a pivotal part of the show and she was basically decimated as a character post 1998. I know a lot of people liked her with Thorne, but I hated it, having her act the exact same with Thorne as she did with Ridge was ridiculous, they were meant to be apparently, even though she had never shown the slightest bit of interest in him before, Eric made sense. He was still reeling from losing Beth and she from losing Ridge, they found each other in a desperately lonely time and she got pregnant, which turned what would have been a brief affair into a marriage that was doomed from the start.

I also hated how violent Stephanie started becoming, then of course Brooke getting pregnant by Deacon was just the end. This was when "The Slut from the Valley" was born.

Around the time Shiela took off I started cooling off. 1999 was okay (except the Brooke/Thorne pairing) but was not that invested in many of the stories and new characters. I was on and off the show and gave up around the time Taylor died again.

Man, Susan Flannery (and this writing) is MISSED.

It really baffles me that soaps can't be more creative with the storytelling. They just recycle plot points instead of digging deeper. A man and a woman married for 20 years get divorced after he leaves her for a younger woman. Stephanie is in denial and believes he's just having a midlife crisis and he will eventually come back to her. It sounds simple enough but Stephanie's POV was written very well and more compelling than anything I have seen on B&B in ages.

I seesaw back and forth between feeling really sad about what has happened to soaps, just thinking they're better off being cancelled and having a small glimmer of hope that at least one writer on one show will get it or possibly turn their show around.

    • I think Ben had already left while under Marland and only returned briefly to reconcile with Eve. The whole thing confuses me as I thought for a long time that Eve left the show to go be with him and that was when they reconciled, but it seems like he returned, they got back together, then he left and maybe they were still together until she left to join him? I have no idea.  It does seem like the interim writers were using some characters like Justin and Helena who were quickly dumped under Kobe/Long, which is a shame. Helena is one of those characters who likely always had a shelf life but Rose Alaio was such a vibrant screen presence, if Kobe/Long had just been patient, she likely would have fit in well in the Reva era.
    • Also, the lawsuit story was not the right story to bring Naomi and Bill into a court battle since those types of lawsuits are usually resolved via settlements.
    • I know that Sara did eventually become Carrie's therapist, but I was curious if the show had her make comments regarding Carrie's stunts of making it seem as though Justin was cheating on Jackie.  Given that Justin cheated on Sara with both Jackie and Brandy, I wondered if it was wise of her to counsel Carrie given the conflict of interest involved. @DRW50I think once Adam/Sara end up married.. Marland didn't see any reason to explore Sara's personal life after the actor playing Adam was released.  I know that Sara lasts until at least Christmas 1982 on the show.. but I don't think she ended up staying on for very long into 1983. The period between Marland quitting and Pam Long starting was the perfect time to clean house on characters that had outgrown their usefulness  (i.e. Ben, Evie, Sara, Jennifer, Morgan).. and tying up stories started by Marland that were too complex (Mona Enright, Mark/Jennifer/Amanda triangle).
    • Unpopular opinion:  The focus on the soap opera tropes over the mysteries and crimes was partly what did the show in.  Also, featuring characters not involved in the legal, police, and criminal elements also hurt the show and took away what made it unique. Featuring characters like Jody, Raven, Sky, etc hurt the show long term.  The show ABCified starting in 1976/1977 and then went through a youthification period starting in 1981.
    • I feel like the lawsuit storyline was resolved quickly because the show didn’t want to spring for more sets.
    • It's been a while, but we have seen the foyer to Bill and Hayley's house as well as the exterior entrance to their house. The foyer was first seen in the premiere episode when Hayley met Vanessa at the house.
    • There's still a year or two before Larkin arrives. Joel is there already. EON does noticeably youthify, although I think they carry it off. Admittedly I haven't seen most of the Jody stories, which from what people here have said aren't great.
    • I don't mind the actor who plays Brian. He's fine. The problem for me is that Paige seems so wishy wishy. She doesn't seem to have much of a personality at this point so I don't see why Brian would be so besotted with her. She just lurches from one trauma to the next. Granted, it's only been a month, but she's not as vibrant as April or even Deborah who has had minimal screen time by this point.  I do worry about the influence of GH on the show since I'm in fall of 1979 and characters have conversations and there's not the drive to "youthify" the show. However, I think Marceau (sp?) is gone. He was given a rather tame sendoff. How long was the actor on the show? I hope this is not a sign of things to come. I worry the show is setting up a murder mystery around one of my favorite characters and I will be mightily annoyed. I also noticed in recent Search for Tomorrow episodes uploaded to YT that the actors playing Logan and Eliot showed up. I don't watch the show but they were in the screencaps. When does Larkin Malloy show up or has he already left? Joel Crothers hasn't shown up either unless I've blinked and missed him.
