AMC and OLTL Canceled!

I'm thinking since Agnes and Susan Lucci have both continually given hope in the press that AMC will find life after ABC (it will go on)... I'm sure these offers are valid. I also think Susan knows that Brian and/or ABC Management has declined those offers, and that has pissed her off, hence the tone and attitude when speaking about ABC/Frons in the press. All makes sense/ties together. That resentment makes sense.

It's too bad ABC owns the characters because if there really was interest and AN was so inclined, she could have gotten creative with it and done something under the banner of her own production company a la Loving/The City (which are available for international syndication).

P&G declined offers for their soaps for the same reasons. It's amazing how P&G and ABC are alike. I thought that ABC appreciated their soaps more.

Yeah right. IF ABC cared and appreciated their soaps they would have never hired people like Megan McTavish, Dena Higley, B&E, Charles Pratt JR, Robert Guza JR, and the list can go on and on.

It really shows you, yet again, the contempt that those at the networks have for soaps, and that they have been actively killing these shows. It's one thing to say oh well fans are pathetic to imagine anyone would ever want these shows and gee daytime has been dying since 1952 and what can you do? and it's another for networks to not even allow anyone else to make even a token effort to keep these shows going.

I just posted this in another thread, but I think it relates to the discussion here, as well:

Of the two shows, OLTL is the one doing better right now, both in the key demographic, and critically (yes, I know some hate it....I haven't watched it in years...but clearly, a large number of people out there like it).

So if you're another network and you think, "Wow, OLTL is doing well. Let's try to pick it up," you have to take into account that the two people responsible for the show doing well right now (Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati) are not going to go with the show if you pick it up. ABC locked them into three year contracts last year, and are plugging Carlivati in over at the much-derided GH. I suspect Valentini will also end up there when they break the news to Jill Phelps in December that her contract isn't being renewed.

In other words....why pick up a show, even one you think is doing well, if you have to find other people to run it? Especially with how history shows a change in regimes at any soap can quickly mean disaster.

So in other words...after much thought...I can't see anyone wanting to risk picking up either show, not even the solidly performing OLTL.

Valentini and RC were also responsible when the show was in the ratings toilet not that long ago, so if someone was interested in picking it up they may not be as invested in who the showrunners are.

I wish someone can explain to me how Agnes is able to make this deal with Fremantle if she doesn't own All My Children. There's no mention of ABC here. This was back in 2009.

ALL MY CHILDREN OFFERS INTERNET INITIATIVE TO SATISFY CROSSPLATFORM NEEDS OF THE GLOBAL MARKET

(Los Angeles, CA / Toronto, ON March 29, 2009): Agnes Nixon, together with The Fremantle Corporation offers ALL MY CHILDREN internet initiative to enhance international broadcast licensees move to cross platform monetization at MIP 09.

Agnes Nixon is the creative force behind more than twenty-five thousand episodes of daytime drama. ALL MY CHILDREN (AMC) has shared a global audience with ABC Network in the U.S. and other international broadcasters for more than 40 years. As a television pioneer and gifted writer, what distinguishes Ms. Nixon, among other things, is that her work has been the first to push social boundaries by bringing socially relevant and challenging topics to daytime. Under the direction of Ms. Nixon, ALL MY CHILDREN is creating synergies between the internet, broadband and broadcast. The show is set in Pine Valley, Pennsylvania, a small, fictitious suburb of Philadelphia. Since its inception, the show has featured Susan Lucci as Erica Kane, one of the daytime's most popular characters.

Our goal is to enhance the value of ALL MY CHILDREN to broadcasters through a cross platform Internet expansion to help promote, expand access and add value for advertisers, viewers and broadcasters, while maintaining geographic exclusivities.

Broadcasters are able to offer daily episodes via the internet, over extended periods. This cross-platform initiative provides interactive opportunities for viewers as well as bonus features.

Broadcasters can employ a special video player from Narrowstep, a unique option that is easy to use and can be embedded into any website to facilitate these interactive features. By using the player, broadcasters can easily create a Catch-up TV solution without the costly process of building their own delivery platform. Broadcasters will retain their relationship with viewers and build advertising dollars, with two slots for banners and Atlas supported pre-roll, multiple mid-rolls and post-roll video ads.

With or without the player, the option of going cross platform with one of the worlds most successful and longest running dramas is a great opportunity, concur Fremantle Corps principal, Irv Holender (LA), and sales executives Diane Tripp (New York), Lisa Dunn (Toronto) and Wayne Broun (Australia).

ALL MY CHILDREN presents opportunities to participate in additional revenue streams such as merchandising and DVD sales, linking up with the www.AgnesNixon.com website, texting opportunities and the available measurement apparatus allowing this new cross platform approach to be very cost effective and viable.

That really pisses me ofd. ABC will cancel two shows, and not even let their fans have a chance to keep their show. UGH!!!!!! Assholes.

On another note, I find it crazy how this thread has never left the first page since the announcement dropped over 2 months ago.

He talks about soaps:

Probably the best interview that I've heard since AMC and OLTL was canceled b/c Tristan pretty much sums up the root of the problem with the supposed death of the soaps. People have to understand that problem is rooted within the problem of daytime not the soaps. The soaps airing in the problems is the main problem. There's nothing wrong with the soaps themselves. It only takes one person to course a movement and give the soaps a new breathe of life that hasn't been there in almost 30 years.

I wonder if All My Children will work in Francesca James somehow. Behind the scenes or in front of the camera?

(NEW YORK) — Maurice Benard, who has played General Hospital’s brooding, dangerous-yet-lovable Sonny Corinthos for 18 years says that if ABC gets rid of his soap, there’s going to be a problem. “If they cancel General Hospital, there are going to be riots because these people are loyal,” Benard told ABC News Radio this week. “They love this show,” he said. “So I dare them to try.”

 Well, I think it's true that GH has the most obsessed fans, but if it's canceled they'll have to deal with it just like all the other fans have.
