AMC and OLTL Canceled!

I'm thinking since Agnes and Susan Lucci have both continually given hope in the press that AMC will find life after ABC (it will go on)... I'm sure these offers are valid. I also think Susan knows that Brian and/or ABC Management has declined those offers, and that has pissed her off, hence the tone and attitude when speaking about ABC/Frons in the press. All makes sense/ties together. That resentment makes sense.

It's too bad ABC owns the characters because if there really was interest and AN was so inclined, she could have gotten creative with it and done something under the banner of her own production company a la Loving/The City (which are available for international syndication).

It really shows you, yet again, the contempt that those at the networks have for soaps, and that they have been actively killing these shows. It's one thing to say oh well fans are pathetic to imagine anyone would ever want these shows and gee daytime has been dying since 1952 and what can you do? and it's another for networks to not even allow anyone else to make even a token effort to keep these shows going.

I just posted this in another thread, but I think it relates to the discussion here, as well:

Of the two shows, OLTL is the one doing better right now, both in the key demographic, and critically (yes, I know some hate it....I haven't watched it in years...but clearly, a large number of people out there like it).

So if you're another network and you think, "Wow, OLTL is doing well. Let's try to pick it up," you have to take into account that the two people responsible for the show doing well right now (Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati) are not going to go with the show if you pick it up. ABC locked them into three year contracts last year, and are plugging Carlivati in over at the much-derided GH. I suspect Valentini will also end up there when they break the news to Jill Phelps in December that her contract isn't being renewed.

In other words....why pick up a show, even one you think is doing well, if you have to find other people to run it? Especially with how history shows a change in regimes at any soap can quickly mean disaster.

So in other words...after much thought...I can't see anyone wanting to risk picking up either show, not even the solidly performing OLTL.

I wish someone can explain to me how Agnes is able to make this deal with Fremantle if she doesn't own All My Children. There's no mention of ABC here. This was back in 2009.

That really pisses me ofd. ABC will cancel two shows, and not even let their fans have a chance to keep their show. UGH!!!!!! Assholes.

On another note, I find it crazy how this thread has never left the first page since the announcement dropped over 2 months ago.

Probably the best interview that I've heard since AMC and OLTL was canceled b/c Tristan pretty much sums up the root of the problem with the supposed death of the soaps. People have to understand that problem is rooted within the problem of daytime not the soaps. The soaps airing in the problems is the main problem. There's nothing wrong with the soaps themselves. It only takes one person to course a movement and give the soaps a new breathe of life that hasn't been there in almost 30 years.

(NEW YORK) — Maurice Benard, who has played General Hospital’s brooding, dangerous-yet-lovable Sonny Corinthos for 18 years says that if ABC gets rid of his soap, there’s going to be a problem. “If they cancel General Hospital, there are going to be riots because these people are loyal,” Benard told ABC News Radio this week. “They love this show,” he said. “So I dare them to try.”

    • Well, since I'm still up unexpected past my growing-into-it bedtime. lol.   I finally got to rewatch Monday's. I even rewatched Friday's to take it all in. Now that we got the reveal and hit the climax of the SilkPress Sheila storyline, now we get to watch the aftermath and/or turns that come with its climax. So far, so good. Friday left us with three cliffhangers. And what I found surprising was how I felt about them over a rewatch.    I know some of you all felt a way about the dialogue during Kat vs Eva. I remember liking it more the first time around and it was nice for them to have these scenes to establish more of a frenemy vibe for them going forward. That still held up. But I found myself agreeing with you all about that dialogue. lol. Still, it was nice to have both of their POVs.   Second up was Silk Press Sheila vs the Duprees. And I was happy to get a brief spat with Dani in there. But the rest standouts for me was Anita and Martin. Haters can hate and given the tail end of the episode, I will agree to a fault, but Brandon has impressed and he was on fire on Monday and had great subtle work on Friday. And that subtle work made it all the better. Like I believe I said when I was watching...BC has a much better grip on his character and seems to be realizing what his tics are so has started to be able to know when to turn it up and when to dial it down. And for the most part (emphasis on most), he got that. Meanwhile, TT was giving fierceness, and I was here for every minute of it. Her reading SilkPress. Her being quip about it. Her 'BE STILL.' Ooooo she had a chokehold on me as Anita gave what I was expecting her to SilkPress. WORTH THE WAIT. I also loved Vernon's CHOOSE SILENCE. I wonder though if SilkPress will figure out Martin's condition from her observing Anita and Vernon with him.   And speaking of worth it...Oooo YES Nicole vs Ted was worth totally worth it. Oooooo I knew DD would nail it, and it was all so well done. The fight between the part of Nicole who is a therapist vs Nicole as a woman who wants to express how she feels. And being so angry. And how there would be moments when it would shoot out of her. And how she would restrain herself. But how she felt she should not be restrain. Just the levels of processing and layers. And DD played it all so well. I do wish Maurice gave just a little bit more, but overall, I thought he did a good job even if it was just Ted coming across as a deadbeat and not at all redeemable. And Kat being there for her mother was so beautiful.   Minority, but I love the montage though yes, it did run a little long. Given how the Duprees like to bond (and also as I mentioned from my own very recent family experiences), it did not seem out of place to me.     That said...let's see how the aftermath worked in today's episode. Overall. Cuz RC can be hit or miss.
    • I wonder whose brilliant (

) idea it was to do an almost complete rip-off of the "who killed Tom King"-storyline. That's some quality style writing right there.....
    • The show is done. It got canceled at the end of January. https://www.soapoperanetwork.com/2025/02/fox-first-run-cancels-dish-nation-person-place-or-thing-pictionary-759232
    • I believe it. ESPECIALLY that last one.
    • Aristotle Dumas. Just thought I'd throw that out there!
