I think you said it perfectly. It's like they are trying to keep the stories at the same pace rather than just let them go more naturally. My big issue last year was that their best weeks were the ones where they had either one of their A stories, a well-paced B story, or a clear focused storyline as the center of a week with other stories surrounding it. So if the audience didn't like the main story that week (for example, Joey/Vanessa/Doug weeks seem to be like that here), there was still other stories that would interest people. However, it got to a point where that was far and in-between too often.
I like the course correction of using one of the Duprees as the main story of the week because it is part of what the show is about. But overall, I feel the show treaded water, too, this month though I still enjoyed so much of it.
