according According to this source, and Entertainment Weekly, Marlena's return made an immediate impact of a 10% increase in viewers, but I checked Jason's page and they finished 1991 in 7th place

I think it's odd that a 10% increase could cause a show to go from #8 to #2 in 1991, but the shows were quite close in ratings and after the initial interest fell off the ratings dwindled.  All things considered they really fumbled that opportunity.  I'd be interested to know how many viewers Hope's 1994 return pulled in, but I can't find that information as quickly.

You would think a jump from #8 to #2 would be more than 10% lol.   But I think we can all agree the oppurtunity was squandered especially after Marlena/RoJohn's great pier reunion.  RoJohn just left her in a flea bag motel and nothing really happened until RealRoman returned and even that was so convoluted.  I think I have said here more than once that story somehow was so quick and not explained well but also seemed to drag on forever lol.  There was also some weird stories happening at the time that weren't interesting to bring in new viewers.  I don't want to get my time periods off and name them, but everything else happening was kind of boring unless you were a big Carly fan.

I would like to know what the ratings were for Hope's return as well, but I think it's a bit of a different animal because 1. it was Kristian Alfonso returning not Hope specifically at the time and 2. the huge story arc of Maison Blanche was ending and I don't think it's as clear as Deidre Hall returning as Marlena.   I don't recall anything "big" happening at the same time as her return.  I do think the ratings were on an upswing back in 1994 though or at least they should have been because that was a great time period for Days.  Hope/Gina's return seem to fit more seamlessly into to the show overall while Deidre's felt like Deidre as Marlena was returning if that makes sense lol.

Briefly skimming synopsis for that time the last week of May appears to be when Hope/Gina is revealed to all and the climax/ending of Maison Blanche (Roman saving John/Marlena, Tony getting blinded, Stefano's escape).  The only other stories of note I could see was Sami's rape and Vivian finding out she's pregnant with Phillip.  I think it's safe to say you can attribute at least some of the jump to KA's return.

I have old SOD's from 1991-1993, and after all the continuous speculation about Manhattan Lives, Coming Of Age, as well as the worry about Another World getting the ax and the last-ditch casting efforts to save Santa Barbara, it's pretty remarkable that we ended up with only 2 soaps by '93, both of which are the longest-standing shows. You would've thought for sure SB would've been replaced by a new sudser.

    • I think Ben had already left while under Marland and only returned briefly to reconcile with Eve. The whole thing confuses me as I thought for a long time that Eve left the show to go be with him and that was when they reconciled, but it seems like he returned, they got back together, then he left and maybe they were still together until she left to join him? I have no idea.  It does seem like the interim writers were using some characters like Justin and Helena who were quickly dumped under Kobe/Long, which is a shame. Helena is one of those characters who likely always had a shelf life but Rose Alaio was such a vibrant screen presence, if Kobe/Long had just been patient, she likely would have fit in well in the Reva era.
    • Also, the lawsuit story was not the right story to bring Naomi and Bill into a court battle since those types of lawsuits are usually resolved via settlements.
    • I know that Sara did eventually become Carrie's therapist, but I was curious if the show had her make comments regarding Carrie's stunts of making it seem as though Justin was cheating on Jackie.  Given that Justin cheated on Sara with both Jackie and Brandy, I wondered if it was wise of her to counsel Carrie given the conflict of interest involved. @DRW50I think once Adam/Sara end up married.. Marland didn't see any reason to explore Sara's personal life after the actor playing Adam was released.  I know that Sara lasts until at least Christmas 1982 on the show.. but I don't think she ended up staying on for very long into 1983. The period between Marland quitting and Pam Long starting was the perfect time to clean house on characters that had outgrown their usefulness  (i.e. Ben, Evie, Sara, Jennifer, Morgan).. and tying up stories started by Marland that were too complex (Mona Enright, Mark/Jennifer/Amanda triangle).
    • Unpopular opinion:  The focus on the soap opera tropes over the mysteries and crimes was partly what did the show in.  Also, featuring characters not involved in the legal, police, and criminal elements also hurt the show and took away what made it unique. Featuring characters like Jody, Raven, Sky, etc hurt the show long term.  The show ABCified starting in 1976/1977 and then went through a youthification period starting in 1981.
    • I feel like the lawsuit storyline was resolved quickly because the show didn’t want to spring for more sets.
    • It's been a while, but we have seen the foyer to Bill and Hayley's house as well as the exterior entrance to their house. The foyer was first seen in the premiere episode when Hayley met Vanessa at the house.
    • There's still a year or two before Larkin arrives. Joel is there already. EON does noticeably youthify, although I think they carry it off. Admittedly I haven't seen most of the Jody stories, which from what people here have said aren't great.
    • I don't mind the actor who plays Brian. He's fine. The problem for me is that Paige seems so wishy wishy. She doesn't seem to have much of a personality at this point so I don't see why Brian would be so besotted with her. She just lurches from one trauma to the next. Granted, it's only been a month, but she's not as vibrant as April or even Deborah who has had minimal screen time by this point.  I do worry about the influence of GH on the show since I'm in fall of 1979 and characters have conversations and there's not the drive to "youthify" the show. However, I think Marceau (sp?) is gone. He was given a rather tame sendoff. How long was the actor on the show? I hope this is not a sign of things to come. I worry the show is setting up a murder mystery around one of my favorite characters and I will be mightily annoyed. I also noticed in recent Search for Tomorrow episodes uploaded to YT that the actors playing Logan and Eliot showed up. I don't watch the show but they were in the screencaps. When does Larkin Malloy show up or has he already left? Joel Crothers hasn't shown up either unless I've blinked and missed him.
