I think Soap Classics has stuff starting from 1979, hence all the great video packages on YT. There is an episode from September 1978 online as well (one of Colleen Zenk's earliest appearances as Barbara). There's also one from 1972 with poor quality B/W video, but it's definitely worth watching. Other than very short clips, however, that might be all that we have from ATWT's early 70s heyday.

Bethel Leslie (the 2nd Maggie on The Doctors) transitioned to writing and even served as head writer for The Secret Storm for a bit. C. David Colson, who played Tom Hughes for several years in the 1970s, turned to writing and now goes by the name David Cherrill & is a script writer for DAYS and has written for OLTL & AW and once served briefly as HW for SFT.

I'm not sure whether this is the proper thread to post this but, I find it interesting that Procter & Gamble is shedding a WHOLE LOT OF its brands (more than 1/2, I think).

I'm wondering if all those people who threatened to boycott their products after the cancellations of ATWT & GL had an effect?

Or is it just the sign of the times and greater competition in the market?

I think David Cherrill wrote for ATWT as well.

He's one of several script writers (including Patrick Mulcahey, Lynda Myles, the late Roger Newman, Courtney Simon, and Michele Val Jean) I could always count on to entertain me as a viewer.

Here are some of the actors and actresses who became writers prior to the time that Millee Taggart and Pam Long became writers:

Irna Phillips and Agnes Nixon were both actresses. Ms. Phillips played a role on one of her radio serials. Ms. Nixon was never a professional actress, but she had studied acting in college.

James Lipton (The Guiding Light)

John Baruff and David Lasan (The Guiding Light)

Margaret DePriest (The Edge of Night)

Richard Holland (The Guiding Light, As the World Turns)

Bethel Leslie (The Doctors)

Ian Wolfe (Somerset)

Ralph Ellis (Our Five Daughters)

Gary Tomlin (Search for Tomorrow, Another World)

Roni Dengle (Another World, Dark Shadows)

Michael Zaslow (Search for Tomorrow, Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, The Guiding Light, One Life to Live)

Then, when Millee Taggart (The Edge of Night, One Life to Live, Search for Tomorrow) became a writer, these followed her:

Megan McTavish (Texas, The Guiding Light)

Mary Pat Gleason (Texas)

Roger Newman and Frances Newman (The Guiding Light)

Ellen Weston (The Guiding Light, Another World)

Michael Zaslow (Search for Tomorrow, Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, The Guiding Light, One Life to Live)

Tom Wiggin (As the World Turns, One Life to Live)

Judy Pace (One Life to Live)

Trent Jones (Ryan's Hope)

David Snell (One Life to Live, The Edge of Night)

Judy Lewis (Kitty Foyle, The Secret Storm)

Lois Kibbee (The Edge of Night, Somerset, One Life to Live)

Kathleen Tolan (Ryan's Hope)

Michael Comforti (The Guiding Light, The Edge of Night)

Geraldine Court (The Doctors, Another World, The Guiding Light, All My Children)

Louise Shaffer (Search for Tomorrow, Where the Heart Is, The Edge of Night, Ryan's Hope, All My Children)

John Loprieno (Search for Tomorrow, One Life to Live)

Marie Masters (Love of Life, As the World Turns, One Life to Live)

Lewis Arlt (Search for Tomorrow, Another World)

Francesca James (One Life to Live, All My Children)

Glenn Turman (primetime serial Peyton Place)

I also think that maybe Keith Charles (The Edge of Night, The Secret Storm, Where the Heart Is, Love of Life, The Guiding Light, One Life to Live, Ryan's Hope) may have written for a while.

Oft times, a show's first headwriter is credited as being the co-creator of the shows. Ms. Nixon is credited as a co-creator of Search for Tomorrow, but my understanding was that the show was created by Roy Winsor and written by Agnes Eckert (Nixon).

    • The thought has crossed my mind. Tricia Mann-Grant did say in her EW interview w/ MVJ and DD, that Leslie wants to be a Dupree just as bad as she wants Eva to be. I believe now that's the direction they are going in, that maybe she is just obsessed with the family. I could be wrong though.
    • True. But I have always had mixed feelings about that twist. Since I love the Damian storyline which already had twists and turns. Also I could not wait for a new powerful AND BLACK businessman to mix it up at some point with Victor. It just seem like another twist that was added on for twist sake. And also for a character (whether I love him or not) to hijack a new and refreshing storyline so they can be propped.    Once good thing that I can say about JG is that he loves to keep the Abbotts in rotation. So I could see that happening with Diane. I don't think she has mentioned her backstory, either. I would be intrigued.
    • That's how I feel. Beats could have been played for the past couple months wherein Dante and Gio interacted and had a difference of opinion -- or something. I don't know. I do know that this crushing rant that blames everything on Gio is absurd. -- Reading over all the comments here about characters and couples, it's kind of amazing that we have any show left considering the number of times actors and writers and execs were given influence to make major character and story decisions. Too many cooks in the kitchen.
    • Lol. But Jeffrey was weak to mama. Leslie can go dead because anger is a great motivator via Martin defending HIS mama and just not taking ish altogether. This ain't how it should be. They need not run the show like this. It's too noticeable. The way Eva said mama reminded me of Penny from Good Times. Instead of physical abuse it's mental abuse.
    • Oh, I see! You posted this on the general retro soap thread because of the voiceover.
    • Yeah, I agree. It's part of the reason I have shade picked on Martin's Secret being so on the backburner that it was about to fall off of it. With Dani/Bill/Hayley being the main tale to start us off and backburned and the SilkPress storyline being well paced, but not set to explode until May, Martin's Secret was the other main storyline that could have been developed. And after giving it a nice slow burn to start off, the story upped and vanished in Month 2. That left the show having to rely on mostly B/C stories to stay afloat to various degrees of success.
    • I loved those scenes, lol. I thought I was watching a stage play. But I do hear what you're saying.
    • Jason47's episode summaries clarify everything. https://daytimeroyaltyonline.com/days-daily-summaries-1990-1999-t14806-s150.html The construction company is "AJ Construction" (AJ = Adrienne+Justin).   Jencon Oil was building an oil refinery at the construction site.  This was adjacent to the park. Kirk Geiger played the character Chad Webster. The character Chad was an actor in the movie being made.   The child friend with Shawn-Douglas is his cousin Andrew Donovan. A few episodes prior, Andrew and Shawn-Douglas were at the park playing hide-and-seek. They wandered off where they shouldn't have gone, by slipping through the gate onto the construction site.  Shawn-D fell into the hole at the oil refinery. There were several episodes of trying to rescue Shawn-D.  Finally Carly rescued Shawn-D, but he was discovered to be deaf.  Andrew felt bad, but Bo and Shane both understood that it was an accident.  Carly later taught Shawn-D sign language. Shawn-D was played by Scott Groff. Andrew was played by Bradley Michael Pierce. pics here: https://web.archive.org/web/20070404163013/http://www.childrenofsalem.com/days/kids/shawnandrew/shawnandrew.html Larger context here: https://web.archive.org/web/20080614054207/http://www.bethsdayspage.com/days/riverfrontraider.htmlhttps://web.archive.org/web/20080614054207/http://www.bethsdayspage.com/days/riverfrontraider.html
    • I had a situation last week where I could watch the new episode on Paramount Plus on my laptop, but it wasn't even listed on my TV as an option.
