Members DeliaIrisFan
Belated thanks for posting these. It's so fascinating to read. Now that we're into 1979, it's doubly fascinating (in a kind of morbid way) because it's almost like going back in time and witnessing the end of the era when multiple soaps could be consistently entertaining in completely unique ways. Within the next year or two, more and more of these shows would be tripping over each other trying to rip off GH's newfound success, and becoming generic and watered down in the process. But at the beginning of 1979, you had AMC as dramedy with a social conscience, the last gasp of Lemay's theatre-esque AW, Slesar's EON at its peak for mystery/suspense (I'm so glad I got to see some of that Mansion of the Damned Story when P&G started posting episodes online a few years back), the climax of the Roger/Holly era on GL, the start of the Karen/Marco years on OLTL, gritty social realism on RH (Siobhan organizing a rent strike!), Y&R doing its thing, and GH coming back from extinction to become first in the ratings with stories that actually sound compelling (as opposed to the gimmicks that came later and that other shows tried to copy). Granted, not every show was perfect... ATWT and DAYS were clearly falling from grace, but they still seem like the same shows they had been, as opposed to the bloodbaths that would follow in the next year or two. SFT was in transition but again the consensus appears to be that it was still true to itself, and initially the incorporation of new characters and types of stories was working. Only LOL sounds really dreadful, and sad though that is, we know it was on its last legs; at least there is a noticeable contrast just by reading these synopses, compared to the shows that were thriving. I'm curious about these ATWT and GH credits. Is it just soap lore that Doug Marland briefly wrote for ATWT in the late 70s (in between GH and GL) and was responsible for writing that Bennett Hadley holding Lisa captive at the haunted inn story? I know I've read that before, but here Marland is still credited at GH while that ATWT story is already playing out (or has possibly finished playing out, now that Lisa was back in Oakdale?). It seems like the dates are pretty accurate (at least, the transition from Lemay to Tom King at AW is consistent with what the AW Home Page says). Anyone know what the real story is? Members Khan
No, it's true, he did write for ATWT for 13 weeks before P&G asked him to take over GUIDING LIGHT from the Dobsons. Lisa and Bennett Hadley's story appears to be over (in the synopses), but you have to remember, he didn't start the tale, he just fixed it and made it better. Members soapfan770
 Love of Life really did become Laugh Out Loud at this point didn't it? Brock and Casey as a couple on Y&R? Wow I'm sorry to hear they didn't last.
Members FrenchFan
Marland took over on Atwt in late August until December.
Members Soaplovers
I was wondering when marland briefly took over ATWT... I've always wondered if it was suppose to be long-term or if it was set up on an interim basis. I'm wondering if you are going to be posting 1980 (or if you've already posted that year in the past?). Only reason I'm curious is because I'm anxious to see what was going on at ATWT and GL with the swith of headwriters. Guiding Light looks like a very well-run show with ample amounts of storylines set up by the Dobson's. I have the ATWT anniverary book and 1980 looks like a very good year in terms of story (yes, a lot of youthful focus but they are related to the older characters). Members DeliaIrisFan
Interesting...I'm guessing the Dobsons weren't fired from GL - wasn't it as successful ratings-wise as it ever was during their run with the Roger/Holly rape story happening? And then they went straight to ATWT. Not that that means they weren't fired, necessarily, seeing as how P&G later played musical chairs with nearly all of their executive producers in the mid-90s, thinking they would all miraculously do less terribly at different shows. But Marland had only just started at ATWT. I can understand P&G was panicking, after ABC had toppled ATWT from first place in the ratings, but Marland wasn't responsible for that - he was the writer who had taken GH to # 1, and now they had snatched him up for ATWT, so why kill whatever momentum he had going and start all over with new regimes at both ATWT and GL? Or were the Dobsons feeling burnt out at GL and looking to leave, and P&G/CBS tried to keep both writing teams by giving the Dobsons something new to do at ATWT and moving Marland to GL? I wonder what would have happened if Marland had just stayed at ATWT in 1979? Would the Reardons have turned up in Oakdale, or some hybrid version of the Reardons and the Snyders? Could CBS have offered something to better compete with ABC in the ratings, if Marland had innovated ATWT as he did GL, while maintaining the core of the show? After all, ATWT already had a fan base that had, until just a year or so earlier, kept it at the top of the ratings for nearly two decades, and that audience would have likely been easier to retain/lure back at that point than by the time Marland returned in the mid-80s, after all the turmoil that had ensued during the interim regimes. And what if the Dobsons had stayed at GL? Would they have done something similar to Steve/Betsy/Craig on GL, but perhaps with less disregard for the veterans than they had at ATWT, since they presumably liked the Bauers, et al? Would Roger have put Holly (or Rita) in a bullring?
Members Paul Raven
It seems to me that Marland was very much in a caretaker position until the Dobsons could move from GL.Maybe there was some behind the scenes stuff that needed sorting out? At the time there were no big announcements about a new headwriter for ATWT,but when Marland went to GL and the Dobsons switched to ATWT there was press about it. Also,Marland didn't make any (major)changes to ATWT,whereas as soon as the Dobsons started at ATWT and Marland at GL new storylines and characters showed up within weeks. It would have been interesting to see if Marland had have taken over ATWT at the time what would have eventuated.
Members DRW50
Did the Dobsons do the Steve/Betsy/Craig stuff? What I've often been confused about with the Dobsons is even though they seemed to recycle some of their GL material at ATWT, what I've seen of their GL run seemed so much quieter, more character-driven, and more interlocked with community, whereas their ATWT run seems much wilder, more extreme, more melodramatic. There's much less of people just sitting and talking. Was this under some kind of order from P&G, or was GL just an exception to the rule for them? Meanwhile, Marland's GL was wilder than his ATWT was.
Members MichaelGL
^I think the Dobsomes tenure at ATWT had many influences from Mary Ellis-Bunim as EP. She's infamous for turning her shows into youth and adventure oriented shows; like Search for Tomorrow.
Members DeliaIrisFan
I don't understand why they needed Marland to temp at ATWT until the Dobsons were available...why were they unavailable, anyway? Both were CBS/P&G shows, so it wasn't a contract issue, and they didn't wrap up their GL stories before they left because Marland wrote Roger and Holly in the house of mirrors and Roger's fall off of the cliff. And why would Marland, coming off of taking GH from the brink of cancellation to 1st place in the ratings, want to be a placeholder at the show that he helped GH to dethrone? It seemed like swooping up Marland for ATWT would have been the real coup for CBS/P&G at that time. It seems like the Dobsons became completely different writers at every show. I came across an old NY Times article from the late 70s once, written by some reporter who was home sick or something and watching soaps one day. He/she claimed not to be a regular viewer, but the article actually wasn't completely dismissive - there was an acknowledgment that each show was unique. The article sort of complimented Ryan's Hope as being known for being more ambitious or something like that; the day's episode featured Jack and Mary listening to an opera which paralleled their story. Then the writer got to GL, and mocked how dated it seemed in comparison - at least half the show was Jackie weeping about not being able to tell Justin that he was Phillip's father or something, and it was apparently very slow-moving, and the dialogue was very melodramatic. That's kind of been my perception of the Dobsons' GL, although I know that the Roger/Holly rape story was very groundbreaking at the time. Then they went to ATWT and wrote fast-paced stories for younger characters, but still very melodramatic. Then they went on to create SB, which was a completely different animal - poked fun at itself (wasn't Marland credited with bringing humor to GL for the first time when he took over? And as far as I know, even the most ludicrous Dobson ATWT stories were played completely seriously) but actually featured a lot of characters over 40 (albeit, ones that they created). I wonder who in the soap biz would have thought when Marland was at GH creating Luke and Laura and Scotty and the Dobsons were still at GL that a decade later, the Dobsons would have created a show like SB while Marland would be rebuilding the Hughes' on ATWT after the Dobsons nearly made them extinct after they wrote off Chris and Nancy? Members Soaplovers
I looked through my ATWT history book after noticing that the Dobson's wrote from late 1979 until early 1981. They created some interesting characters/storylines especially in 1980.. James Stenbeck Margo Montgomery Lyla Montgomery They had Barbara involved with Tom then dumping him at the altar when James came into the picture. Plus, they started the Margo/James affair, made allusions to John being Margo's father, put Bob with Lyla, had Cricket become friends with Betsy, and introduced Kim's Greek love interest. In addition, they bought back Joyce and played her off with Ralph, Don, Grant, and Lisa. Finally, they put Dee and John together based on John manipulating the situation thus angering her parents. I do think that they did add youthful characters but they were connected to long term characters. Plus, the Dobson's didn't write straight thru till the mid-80's either.. there were several short term writers. According to what I found, they wrote from late 1979 till 1981 then several headwriters in the year of 1981 before the Dobson's came back from 1982-1983 then several headwriter changes before Susan Bledsoe Horgan wrote the show for about a year and stablized it. I'm curious about why there were so many headwriter changes. Finally, did Douglas Marland make Springfield into a community where everyone gossiped about each other like he did at ATWT? The one thing I've noticed about GL was not a lot of character interaction (i.e. Did Holly/Ed ever interact with Alan, Jackie, Elizabeth, Eve, Amanda, etc and vice versa). From what I read, the actress who played Holly quit mostly because her character had become so sheltered and passive after the Roger ordeal. Based on one episode from May 1980 that I saw on youtube, I think Holly/Ed were being set up as the endgame especially given Rita/Alan's affair that happened down the line.
