And that is the million dollar question. Whether she has any control of her performances anymore, of if she's merely a puppet. I think she's great in general.. it's just her skill set isn't suited to this particular storyline. And of course, the red shiny satin swathed across her ample midsection is NOT helping matters. why doesn't she just wear stirrup pants and horizontal stripes while she's at it? OF course it wouldn't surprise me that Rauch would be bossing her around. This show has always had a chauvanistic undercurrent behind the scenes, considering how Dickson and Rowell don't have the clout to get away with stuff that Braeden and Bergman get away with on an almost daily basis. Other soap divas carry their clout and can use it... Lucci, Slezak, Zimmer..... but Y&R's divas have all seemed to have had their wings clipped somehow. Cooper has never even crossed them in a MAJOR way.

To be honest, if Dickson was still playing Jill, her character (as played by Walton now) would NOT be the same person, hence the storylines would be completely different. There is no way anyone would buy the idea that Jill is a Fenmore if Dickson was in the role. What the current-day writers have done is destroy any iota of history from Y&R's characters; the whole up-from-rags Jill Foster battling the high-and-mighty Katherine Chancellor is what made Y&R so riveting in the '80s. As for Lauren, I will never forget the terrific Lauren/Danny/Tracey triangle in the mid '80s, when I was watching Y&R with my mother and older sister. I was always pulling for Tracey.

At least this nixes the concept of Brock and Jill being direct siblings--which I didn't like from the get go.

Cosign on the Abby love. LOVED Rylan on GL and wanted her on AMC. Oh well, at least she's doing great on this show. Love how she stood up to Ashley. So did she and Daniel really have sex or not? Oh and did anyone find it creepy that Tucker had the clip of her going at it on his phone. I thought he was going to whip out a blog post about it; not the actual sex tape.

Hated Nikki and Katherine gossiping about Jill like two old hags. How presumptuious of them

Are they really trying to force a sister rivalry between Jill and Lauren. This is so pathetic as is Jill. She was so over the top, changing her name and trying to force herself into the Fenmore family. Isnt she like 60? This is something Id expect coming from someone much younger

Jess Walton in her interview with Michael Fairman regarding Jill's ever changing parentage, and story direction.Michael says it's hard to keep track.

Jess replies:

It is, isn’t it? I agree with you, and it used to bother me. I would try and keep a steady course with it, and now I can’t. Now I just roll with the punches. It’s impossible! For awhile there you just kind of say things like, “My character wouldn’t do this, and who is this?” But now, I just kind of go, “Oh, my God. This is going to be fun”, because it’s something new, and it’s something different.

Seems a veiled way of saying she's not thrilled with the current state of Y&R. Who can blame her?

Yeah, she just realized it's not worth bothering to make sense of her character anymore. It obviously took her years to realize that the people in charge don't know what they are doing. She knows she needs the money, so she's keeping quiet, just like most of the other actors. It's depressing.

Agreed that the whole Jill as Fenmore thing is inane. They're writing her motivation as some kind of family-less nomad who's been wandering the earth desperately trying to find a family to fit in with so that her life makes some sort of sense. Now that her newfound sister Lauren has rejected her, she's out for blood. Truly WTF! It's ridiculous. This is supposed to be a smart, savvy confident businesswoman with kids and grandkids who came from a fully nurturing, loving family (the Fosters). I understand the need to add conflict and to mix up characters who've had little interaction in the past, but how about going about that in a way that's at least somewhat character-driven?

And Jill was a woman who liked loyalty. She didn't always practice it but she did her best to return a lot of the time. So Maria having Jill acting like The Fosters, Abbotts & Chancellors were all inconsequential speed bumps to her REAL family is WAY OOC.

Jill & Nikki's exchange was fun though.

Mel & Jess have always worked well together.

It would've made MUCH more sense for Jill to start her OWN company & go after Fenmore's THAT way.

But as usual Maria squandered SO much potential to actually give Jess & Tracey Bregman (amongst many others) meaningful stories the past few years.

    • That's what happened with Hope Williams Brady on DAYS.  Started as rich princess, went to the police academy.   Became a cop.  Now consults for the I.S.A.
    • I know Curlee/Demorest tried to give Roger a conscience in regard to raping Holly, and Zas is magnificent in those scenes with Alex. But he kinda ends up blaming Adam and the fact he (well, really the writers) ignores raping Rita and being responsible for her and Ed's child's death make it less than convincing.  I do think during 89-93 they were careful to not whitewash his past with Holly, but his occasional bouts of conscience always seemed to be overridden by his obsession/lust for her. The only purely good thing I can ever recall him doing is helping Maureen during the blackout, and even then, had she lived, he would've found a way to call that favor in. I've kinda resisted saying it, but it's kind of clear to me Long was determined to have her own version of Erica Kane, and God help us all, it ended up as Reva Shayne. Although at least Kim could act. (Sorry LaLucci fans) Honestly, I'm not even sure CBS soaps ever a character as larger than life as Reva.
    • Regardless, I'd still like to see more episodes from the 80s...there is very little of Charlotte Greer, Kirklands and Greenberg's out there sadly.
    • A black family having a white maid would be a good subversion of stereotypes. Also want to say that while the overall show has many flaws, the biggest one that's legitimately stifling is the lack of a rival family.
    • I also do not like the bits I've seen with Delia during Labine's 83 return. I am glad when she came back for the last time in 1986, she allowed Delia to move on from Frank.
    • Thanks for the well-detailed reply. I'm fairly early in my viewing, so I have some time before it goes nuts. Thanks a lot! @kalbir and @DRW50 thank you so much. I am just approaching 100 episodes, so I'm good for now.
    • The Duprees as the main family isn't the problem, but the fact is that over 3/4 of the cast are Duprees.. so it limits coupling potential and also keeps the canvas too closed in. Too many female Duprees and no hetero, nor gay, male Duprees is also a problem.   I also agree with @DemetriKanethat the male characters are one note, and not very layered/interesting... outside of Bill, that is. To me, I would have focused on either Nicole's family and dynamics or Dani's family and dynamics instead of trying to introduce/develop both families at the same time.  Nicole's family is more developed and interesting with loads of storyline possiblities then Dani's family right now. And because MVJ and co decided to feature so many Duprees... we're less likely to be free of any outside characters like Ashley/Derek since they're the non-Dupree part of the canvas.

    • I can not see Kat as a police officer and do not want that for her. Thats not her passion nor does she care about that stuff. The stuff with Eva and Leslie is specific to her life and wanting to protect her family. Her "detective" skills have more to do with her business background, which makes her very analytical and pay close attention to details. If this show had a corporation, she'd make a shrewed businesswoman and CEO I definitely dont want to see her sleep with her cousin's husband. That would be too much of a Hayley redux which ironically you dont want with the Sharon/Hayley theory
    • I would make Jan, Ashley's mom, Anita and Vernon's maid. It would lock in to why Leslie would choose to befriend both her and Mona. It also gives Ashley a connection to the Duprees and explains how she befriended Naomi. I would have had Derek start the show as a cop to explain his connection to Jacob. Kat needs to realize that she is MADE to be a detective. Have her go through police training, making the appropriate comments about the uniform along the way. Have her prove she is so much more than a rich princess, even to herself. Then, when Jacob's partner is proven to be dirty, Kat is assigned as Jacob's rookie trainee. At the same time, Naomi does finally get a case she can follow through on. Her client is a person that Jacob arrested. This puts them at odds because Jacob knows this person did it, as does Kat, but Naomi only sees the extenuating circumstances and believes he deserves a lighter sentence and a second chance. THAT is when Jacob will turn to Kat in frustration and she will lose her virginity to him.
