ALL: Temporary Replacements

Yes, in '98, and there was some weird hubbub, it looked like a temp for all intents and purposes but then stuff started to seep out that this was actually a permanent recast as Torpey's contract negotiations weren't going smoothly (the implication that she was holding out and the show went forward without her). Who knows what was real or fan fabrication, but it was one of those *moments* in the "the Internet is still relatively new" age of soap fandom.

Soap Opera Encyclopedia has June Carter as Secret Storm's Amy Ames in 1960. If only that was THE June Carter.

This woman wasn't an actress, but From These Roots associate director Barbara Searles had to immediately replace Julie Bovaso when Julie walked 15 minutes before an episode was about to air (she disagreed with director Paul Lammers about the meaning of a scene and some line interpretations).

Schemering has Susan Keith as Samantha Vernon in 1979. Was she a temp or a failed recast? I think I remember Julie Montgomery (listed as 76-81) saying she left and then came back because the recast didn't work out? Was that this situation?

Julie or Barbara?

Apparently Julie was later in Saturday Night Fever. I wonder if she traded war stories with Karen Gorney and Lisa Peluso.

I'm not sure if this counts but for Dark Shadows, Peter Turgeon, the last Dr. Dave Woodard, replaced Robert Gerringer, who refused to cross a picket line. Grayson Hall had convinced most of the others to do so.

The last weeks of Dave Woodard had some of my favorite DS lines.

Dave: I saw your sister Sarah today. <Barnabas makes a WTF face>

(after Julia kills Dave)

Barnabas: Julia, you have no friends...

Beverly Garland as Kathrine? Can't even imagine it, mainly because I've never been too fond of any of Garland's work.

I wonder when if the dreadful Wesley Ann Pfenning subbed for Bauer on Y&R before or after her short stint as an Alice recast on AW. Kent Masters King is a nice person, but Dru's 2000 return was ruined because of that and they wrote Dru out again.

The second time Mantooth took over from Hendrickson on ATWT it was supposed to be permanent until Hendrickson decided to unretire and came back in '05.

Were these temp recasts for DAYS' oft-recast Mary Anderson?

Nancy Stephens 1975

Carla Borelli 1975

Susan Keller 1980

The first two were between Karin Wolfe and Barbara Stranger and Susan was when Stranger was still in the role.

Wait, so Susan Keith (she is only Shana and JK's wife in my mind) was the original Cecile? Or was she between two stints of the other actress?

Yeah, I have a hard time imagining KMK as Dru, she is a Layla.

Susan was the first Cecile. She was there when Cecile was the innocent who had her heart broken by some guy Iris paid to keep Cecile away from Dennis, then when Cecile got dark and snagged Jamie Frame and got him hooked on pills and made a play for Mac. I think Nancy was brought in by the time of the Sandy/Cecile stuff. I can't remember if Susan wanted to leave or if they fired her.

    • I'll miss him too (still can't believe those were actual publicity photos - Joe Breen must have had a coronary), but he won't be gone forever.  Rauch did well at making people feel they were important (as long as they were willing to play along). That's probably why Erika Slezak loved him (he also gave her better story than he gave Zimmer). I think Kim has a certain amount of self-awareness but also needed to feel like she was the big star and desperately needed by the show. Wheeler was clearly incapable of expressing that.
    • Nicole has 2 assistants but no one else gets any staff (that we see). Are Dani and Hayley fixing meals and clearing blocked drains? I think they need to establish that they have some assistance. Vernon and Anita need to have a visible housekeeper. Give the Duprees some help!
    • . Her husband posted the following message: "The love of my life. The brightness in my life which is now so dimmer. In April I lost you and I miss you so much and I hope you are at peace. Lost Pam due to things beyond what was going on in her life. The original Peggy Brooks on The Young and the Restless and many more shows and commercials and then the creator of Chocolate Fortunes. So beautiful and a hell of a sense of humor. Great laugh, Great smile and Great compassion. You are my sidekick forever. Will miss you and all your sharp barbs. The angels are with you my beautiful angel. Fly safe and be happy. Much love and kisses forever."

    • I grew up in a neighborhood behind the gates and it really wasn't uncommon to have your house unlocked. In my neighborhood there was an armed gate before you enter the neighborhood and you have security patrolling 24/7. One thing that was common when I was in high school were for the kids whose parents were real estate agents to use their houses to throw house parties. It was easy because they were always unlocked.

    • I posted this a few weeks ago but it's worth popping up again as Grant does get asked about return rumors, that Paul Rauch had tried to get the show revived for years but P&G just would not sell it.

    • If those two crazy (and I do mean crazy!) kids can't make it, where's the hope for the rest of us?!

    •   Sonia was on the director rotation at DAYS. On BTG, Sonia had been credited as a producer.  May 23 was her first episode directing BTG.
    • And Kim Zimmer also gave interviews where she admitted to some of her behavior and she apologized for it. I give her credit for admitting her wrongdoing and taking responsibility because other actresses would not have done that.  BTW, I will miss John Payne from your avatar.

JFP's GL post-1993 may have needed Kim Zimmer to try to salvage the mess that was made of the show (and that turned out to be another disaster), but GL post Zimmer's departure was fantastic. Forbes showed GL didn't need Zimmer as well. I also think Santa Barbara didn't help her ego either since Sydney Penny got the attention, and most SB viewers loathed Zimmer's Jodie character. To be fair, I think a big part of the problem was the writing and the producing, but since Zimmer thinks Rauch is such a genius, that's on her.
