I see Michael Lembeck of One Day At Time fame directed the first eppy. A reunion for him and Valerie.

Valerie Bertinelli is just not a lead actress and not strong enough to be the adult center of a sitcom, IMO. At least she was cute on One Day At A Time.

I found this show awful, I knew it was never going to be something amazing, but it's nothing but weak one liners that try too hard and another generic show that hides behind female friendships. It's all just so flat.

And as I mentioned in my status update the other day, Wendie Malick is such a poor man's Christine Baranski.

As Y&RWortdTurner pointed out there was too many one liners. The only good jokes were from Betty White. She had the best lines on the show. Valerie needs better/stronger co-stars to help her out. She can't carry this show. Right now Betty White is carrying this show.

It's always tough to judge a sitcom by its' pilot, b/c 1) the pilot has to do a lot more than just "be funny"; and 2) b/c pilots are usually written and shot before the show-runner has had an opportunity to hire a full-time writing staff, there isn't the benefit of having other writers tweak the script. Having said that, I think I'll wait a few more weeks before I pass final judgment on this one. Already, though, I think Suzanne Martin would be wise to take a cue from Bob Newhart's shows and make Valerie Bertinelli the straight man (er, woman) and sort-of audience advocate, allowing her character to react to the others' antics the way we would since, IMO, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and Betty White are the real stunners here.

    • To clarify, we could argue about the necessity to have John Black speak while in hospital, but the body created an opportunity for people to touch him, and move around him.  Even though I never totally suspended my disbelief, I appreciated their creative choice to form a visual representation of loss.  Certainly there were other ways to tell this story, but it will stay with me because those production choices enabled these performances. However, with disdain, I note that Days has found an odd middle ground between a flashback and a montage.  I define a flashback as least a couple of rounds of dialogue, if not a whole scene.  And a montage would be a visual snippet without much dialogue.  But, these were often just a single line, or an entrance.  It felt like a bit of tease, and made me wish that Peacock had curated a playlist of John Black's Greatest Hits, like they do for some Bravo shows.
    • It's tough for me because I feel like this has always been Lulu. She used to be even worse, slut-shaming, verbally abusing other women, and always being written as being in the right. They should let Brook Lynn get dirtier, but I think the material of Lulu digging and being self-righteous, making everything worse even while not intending to do so, but also not being as in the wrong as Dante thinks she is, all makes sense for her. But I don't have as much experience with Lulu as a lot of fans as I just could never stomach her beyond the time she was a mute kid, so I don't have much right to speak.
    • Thanks @JAS0N47 for all the ratings!   All My Children hits Number 1 in the ratings for the first time in its history during the week of 8/20/73-8/20/73!
    • I think the writing is slanted against Lulu.  I don't think there is an issue with the character in general.  I just think Lulu comes doesn't get many layers or nuance in her writing.  Lulu becomes obnoxious and a bully to Brook Lynn and both characters SHOULD have flaws.
    • Totally here for Anita dumping Sharon in the past for first Dante Green, and then Vernon...

    • Amanda Setton and Rena Sofer was once again really good in today's episode.  As a Lucky/Liz fan, I didn't like their scenes either.  And they are nowhere near a proposal because they haven't been given a real story.
    • I don't think Lulu is written that badly.  Lucky they do seem to have no real interest in. I wonder if this is another story they have decided to wrap up abruptly as it makes zero sense to have what would have clearly been serious conflict between Liz and Lucky just get shrugged off by her. Maybe the intense viewer negativity toward Kristina got through to them.
