Irna would use the same type of writing with Lisa on ATWT, wanting her own place and trying to manipulate Pa Hughes into moving out. It's very clever as beyond being used to define a character, it also pushed the buttons of housewives who either had once been a Lisa or a Bert, or despised women like them.

Rita and Ed had chemistry, and it was nice to see them in a happier time.  Shame the actress opted not to return in 1989 cause I imagine Long/Curlee would have done Rita justice.  If Maureen was jealous of Holly, imagine what she would have felt about Rita lol

Elizabeth with short hair...who knew.  Another character forgotten that could have been bought back for story and visits in the 80s and beyond.

I assume Dean was another bad news hubby for Sara?

Dean was involved in shady dealings with Alan that led to his death, I think - some of it involved smears against Elizabeth to help him get custody of Philip. Blackmail tapes involving Dean and Alan were used by Roger to force Alan to hide him and protect him during and after the rape trial and shooting, and were later used by Diane before Alan turned himself in to the police. Crazy that that subplot would carry all the way through to about 1982.

I would have loved for Joan Collins to be a returned Elizabeth..she got her act together...(and became extremely confident and glam) and comes back for revenge.

I wonder why after Simon left, they didnt ask this Ed back. Its not like they were using Ed as this big stud and MH as we discussed made a great dad kind of guy.

Richard van Vleet was well-liked by AMC fans so his hiring seemed like an early attempt at the ABC-ification of the P&G soaps. After that I guess they just stuck with Simon, other than a year or two in the late '90s. I do wish they'd asked Mart back.

That's a great idea about Joan as Elizabeth. A short-term, defined arc would have worked well.

I've said it before but I think Robert Gentry was the quintessential "Ed" but Mart Hulswit was definitely the most likable. I too wish they would have brought him back. I never liked Peter Simon and I thought Richard van Vleet was a bit of a miscast.

@BillBauer thank you for the 1978 episode. I can see why Bridget Dobson disliked the "dead leaves" but I must say the full closing credits theme is gorgeous. It's similar to my issues with "Jalinda's Theme" on ATWT...

The Philip custody material can feel very draining, as it's so heavy and everyone involved is (understandably) very dour; I'm glad that we got some of the scenes with Rita and Ed as a balance. I can see why Rita tested the female audience so much at the time, given how unabashedly sensual Lenore Kasdorf was in the role. It's such a contrast from most other ladies on GL, or on any of the soaps.

(is this before Roger raped Rita?)

Millette Alexander is great in these clips - such layered acting and you feel for Sara even though this is very warmed-over material for the character by 1978.

I do like JoBeth Williams but from the little I've seen of her I wonder if she was miscast as Brandy, who should have been more fun on paper. This guy playing Peter always felt like a weird casting choice as well.

What an awesome treat. Just love the under current of tension between Elizabeth and Justin. Never seen Elizabeth with short hair. She looks very chic. Peter and Brandy were so BORING. Never seen Dean Blackford before. This must be Sara's last big story. Which is sort of a retread of Lee Gentry saga. Only seen Sara in Dr mode. It's great to see her in a story. Rita and Ed had great chemistry.

    • I think Jason might've posted some numbers for the syndication a while ago and the numbers for Falcon Crest was horrible. Like 1.5 rating or something, which was terrible.    ETA: it was actually Paul Raven:   New to syndication 60 min Fall Guy 67 markets 3.1/8 Falcon Crest 110 markets 1.1/5 To get into the top 40, you needed a 4.6/9 rating for reference - and Falcon Crest managed to get into a lot of markets to begin with. In the fall of 1985 Dynasty, Dallas and Knots were syndicated (show / rating / share / coverage % / markets): Dallas 3.4 10 51.7 92 Dynasty 3.4 10 48.7 47  Knots Landing 3.3 10 12.5 20  So, Knots as an example trippled Falcon Crest's rating with 20 markets - I'm sure those were major ones but it just goes to show you how much Falcon Crest bombed in syndication.
    • It's not bad but the stories move too slow. It's the same problem when Dan O'Connor was CO-HW with Van Etten, they have a million stories and they all drag on endlessly with no resolution. I'd argue the majority of the stories airing now are good but you get sick of waiting months for something to happen.
    • Thanks. I must have missed that period entirely for Lifetime.
    • Thanks. I know Marland did that type of thing sometimes but it's less likely with these characters. I don't even remember Alex ever mentioning him.
    • French fan summary Rusty took over Simon's job at Lewis Trucking after Simon transferred to Lewis Oil's North Carolina office to live near Jessie and Calla. I doubt they would bother following up a story for offscreen characters eg marriage and a baby.
    • I suspected that the performance with the reveal was the reason why the Ted actor got the axe and it looks like I was right. He wasn't really good at conveying what needed to be conveyed in those scenes. Claybon is at least slowly improving (but I agree that he still needs to work on his line delivery), but I do wonder what will happen when his big reveal is coming up.
    • I've already asked this before, recently, but can anyone who watched those years more closely tell me if anything said about Jessie and Simon at the end of their profiles is accurate (about them marrying, naming a baby after Brandon/Lujack, etc.)?
    • Nicole is way too smart to not know she was carrying twins - she's a doctor! My guess is that Leslie did abort her baby out of fear, and as payback, stole Ted and Nicole's child (Eva), and stole Kat from another family to replace her in the hospital.
    • Those Soap Central profiles have a lot of incorrect info. According to SOD summaries and the Daytime Newsletter of the time,Tim left town for a new job and Pam reunited with the father of her baby and also departed Springfield. They did not marry.
    • Do we believe that Jabot is at the level of Estee Lauder?? I am on board with Jabot deciding to expand but the way it was handled was ridiculous. Jabot just decided and bingo, that was that. Not months of negotiations and decisions about how it would fit into the Jabot portfolio. And then no follow through. Josh thinks he's serving business stories by characters sitting around and discussing mergers, takeovers and job switching. Now we have Audra setting up her own company -Vibrator or something. Well, why not? You don't need staff, office space or even products.
