There's a man on youtube with a page called Obsolete Video and I think if anybody could find it, it's him. He's posted an impossible to find 70s Y&R episode and he's posted color closing credits from the 70s soaps, that haven't been available in anything other than B&W kinescope. As he buys collections I feel he could uncover something.

The talk of James Douglas in the AW thread had me wondering if he was approached to play Steven Cord in RTPP.

Pat Morrow,Evelyn Scott and Frank Ferguson returned which leads me to believe that others may have been approached.

Obviously Ryan and Mia would not have been interested and I can't see Barbara Parkins agreeing, even though her career stalled after PP.

Ed Nelson and Christopher Connelly were getting primetime gigs.

Dorothy Malone seems to have pretty much retired and Tim O'Connor I don't think would be interested in daytime.

Obviously Ruth Warrick wasn't available.

So that pretty much leaves James. He agreed the following year to AW and then spent many years on ATWT.

Maybe he wanted to be in New York?

Or didn't want to be Steven Cord again?

Or possibly when RTPP began in 72 he wasn't interested in daytime but a slow year could make a difference...by 73 a steady gig may have held more appeal?

I did see a little of RTTP. Saw a little toward the beginning, but it was very slow and I had never seen Peyton Place, so I didn't watch much. Saw some of Katherine Glass, who was first-rate, as she was on OLTL. She had that waif-like presence which makes people want to comfort and protect her. I knew Joseph Gallison from AW, and liked him in everything I ever saw him play. And I knew Mary K. Wells from TSS, and she was good as always.

Then I saw more of it toward the end, where there was too much talk about "the enabling legislation for the deepwater port," and I didn't figure out if that legislation was a good thing or not. Pamela Shoop was very pretty, and as someone said, she had a Southern California vibe, quite different from Katherine Glass. I liked Charles Sailor as Tom Dana, a good-looking guy, and Margaret Mason was a wonderfully smirky troublemaker, just as she later would be on DOOL and as she later would be on Y&R, and why the soaps didn't keep her around all the time being smirky and evil is a mystery to me. I also liked Mary Frann as D.B. Bentley and enjoyed her subsequent career.

There were elements that could have worked, given more time and good stories. I seem to have seen a lot of shows at the end of their run. I loved WTHI and was crushed when it was canceled; LIAMST was a solid show and I had enjoyed the last year; TSS would have been OK with better writers, and it had Jada and Marla; HTSAM was a mess when it was canceled, having dropped all the original male actors in about a year, and the only improvement was that Armand Assante had stopped trying to speak with an Irish accent; Somerset, after good years under Cenedella and Slesar, was in "let's throw stuff at the wall and hope something sticks" mode; FRFP never really took off though it wasn't bad. RTPP was on that borderline where the network could have given it time or not. Some of these canceled shows were in bad time slots for different reasons, which also hurt.

A question regarding Joe Gallison.

He joined Where The Heart Is in March 73, a month before RTPP debuted.

So was Steven Cord not part of the original cast?

When did Joe/Steven come on?

Joe was a 'big name' in soaps having been very popular as Bill Matthews on AW and playing Tom Edwards on OLTL.

So what was the deal with Joe joining WTHI and leaving soon after?

Did any of the mags at the time make mention of this?

    • I don't expect Lois to be the same person she was 25 years ago, but she's definitely lost a lot of what made Lois unique.  It's clear the show doesn't know how to write for her, and the sole purpose of Lois is to hide this Gio secret.  It's a shame she doesn't interact with more of the canvas.  It's a waste of Rena's talents. I like Brook Kerr most of the time.  She can be hit or miss.  I totally get what you are saying about her line readings too.  I honestly think the character really suffers being stuck in the Curtis pairing.  She's much better than Tanisha Harper's Jordan lol.
    • Friday and yesterday's episode is what daytime television should be. The other shows airing could take a page from yesterday's show.  I loved the rage, hurt and anger Nicole unleashed on Ted.  Daphnee should be up for an Emmy nom for these scenes.  It broke my heart to see how Dana had locked Eva out.  I do feel sorry for Eva.    I am still bumfuzzled as to why Leslie/Dana went to the DuPree's and asked them to accept Kat UNLESS Eva is really Kat's twin (and really Nicole and Ted's daughter that maybe they though they lost or an embryo Dana/Leslie stole??) I loved how Anita and Vernon both shot her down.    Ohhh and let me just say Friday and yesterday was the MOST fire I have seen Martin have since the show started.  Maybe Brandon Clayborn is coming into his own with the role finally.
    • You've been seeing him all along. You just didn't know it was him, I guess.

    • Where to for Dana? She's pissed off the Duprees (most of the cast), alienated her daughter and will she be welcomed by the Have Nots at the diner? Maybe she can befriend Ashley and Derek and liven up their story.
    • Melissa Ordway announced she was moved to recurring back in November but is still credited with the contract cast members.
    • I think of Evan as a smarmy bast*rd. Maybe you'll like that description. You certainly have him pegged correctly since he is just a soldier following "Admiral" Iris's marching orders.
    • So far the only interest I've seen from Evan to Amanda has been listening to Iris's orders to go and seduce her.  So far he hasn't been successful... but who knows. Amanda is unbearable at times. Entitled, spoiled... idiotic. Iris... so blatantly manipulating her and Amanda takes the bait. But I guess... when she gets in trouble... she'll have a chance to learn. That's what makes these shows so interesting.    Oh, no, don't worry. You haven't ruined a thing. Evan has not been on my radar that much... he was not one of the characters I was caring particularly... so nothing much has been changed for me. I don't think he has the stuff to ruin Rachel's life. He's just a pretty guy that can follow orders. Iris on the other hand... is dangerous.

P.S Maybe Evan will surprise me. Who knows.
    • The show has gone back to 10/10 entertainment! I'm glad that I was right in feeling that what were experiencing were growing pains. I'm sure they are not over yet, but I'll know that we always comeback to quality drama. I think it's going to be a hell of ride (in a good way) from this moment on. BTG has that magic that not a lot of shows have. I'll update more... when I'm done catching up.
    • So very glad to hear this. Yesterday I suddenly thought; OMG, what about spoilers, have I just  ruined things for Maxim in getting carried away with interest in Evan, who was so well-written & well-acted. BTW, your fan review of this episode was a sight for eyes that had not seen one of these for a little bit too long, LOL!!!  Mitch is also fascinating to me but in his case it's because he was all in with Janice & her nefarious plan & then he did this turnabout we've mentioned & he basically got off scot-free.
    • It does seem cheap and lazy for this show to have just one family. Passions was heavily criticized but it was nicely structured with a total of four families.
