There has been a lot of discussion about all of the Alice's but can we talk about the Matthew and Amanda's through the later years?

Ā

According to wiki we have Sandra Ferguson (1987–93, 1998–99); Christine Tucci (1993–95); Anne Torseglieri (1993); Laura Moss (1996–98).Ā  Sandra was classic Amanda but her characterization wasn't always clear.Ā  She was introduced as a spoiled socialite but Sam (and a baby) shamed her into being more grounded.Ā  Then, Christine Tucci comes along and she looks more like Rachel's daughter but once again Amanda was a little wishy-washy.Ā  It didn't help that she got caught up in the Harrison drama but didn't contrast well against Vicky.Ā  Once Vicky had kids she became a heroine/damsel-in-distress.Ā  Amanda played exactly the same purpose so she became the odd man out in the Harrison family story.Ā  Then, there's Laura Moss.Ā  It annoys me to this day that she played Amanda during Rachel's anniversary special.Ā  I feel like this time they got the character right, Amanda was scheming and sexy, but the actress was wrong and poorly cast.

Ā

For Matthew we have; Matt Crane (1988–97, 1998–99); Brian Krause (1997–98); Jeff Phillips (1998).Ā  Matt Crane's part of the intro fascinated me for years.Ā  I couldn't figure out if he was air drumming or, playing with a yo-yo or, practicing nun-chucks?Ā  His Matthew was charming and reflected all of Mac's best qualities.Ā  Krause and Phillips were too gritty.Ā  They both tried to imbue Matthew with an ennui that didn't fit with the character's upbringing. Ā

Ā

Unlike, Dennis or Jamie this generation of Cory's had no need for a chip on their shoulder.Ā  Matthew and Amanda got plenty of attention growing up.Ā  Their time in boarding school was just enough to SORAS the role.Ā  However, neither had iconic stories due to a lack of consistent characterization.

Ā

Don't get me started on all of the Sam's

Amanda & Sam hadĀ potential.Ā But it was quicklyĀ squandered. With in a year they were married with a kid. Adding Evan and Olivia into the mix was a great idea. But it was all badlyĀ executed. Poor Amanda was stuck with badly recast Sam's for years. Matt CraneĀ imbued MattĀ Cory withĀ charisma.Ā  Rachel'sĀ kids deserved better.

I think Sandra Ferguson had an easier time in her first stint as Amanda because her character did have a good consistent character arc.Ā  She had a harder time when she reprised the role in early 1998 due to a lack of strong writing, a character that had been changed quite a bit during her five years away from the role.Ā Ā

Ā

We've seen other performers on different shows reprising their roles after being played by a recast and sometimes struggle (i.e. IK on Ryan's Hope, Brenda Dickson on Y & R, etc).Ā  I think they struggle because the character changes due to different writers, how their replacements played the character, etc.

Ā

We saw her struggle to play the damsel in distress because the Amanda of her years wasn't a damsel in distress.. she was impulsive and a little entitled.. but wasn't so ditzy nor needy (Moss played up the needy part to the hilt when she played Amanda).

Ā

Matt Crane also struggled a bit when he came back because he came back where Matt was the 'bad guy' for keeping Lila away from Cass... and it just didn't work.Ā  I recall reading somewhere that had the show been renewed.. they were going to revisit Josie/Matt.

There was also Daniel Dale who played a teenage Matthew from 1986 to 1987. I really liked him in the role and would have loved to see what he would have done with the role. But the character was aged by a few years and recast with Crane in 1988.

    • I think June is the kids' mother and potentially Leslie's sister. There's enough story thre especially given Martin's feelings towards Leslie. It would make things even messier if he killed her husband, further intertwining her into his life
    • Same. And you know I've been trying my best with Y&R and how I feel about GH.

Ā  Ā  Also same.Ā  Ā  Amen. And not alone in that minority. Ā I'm still wondering if that was a good drop off point for him all day. In a way...it truly is given what Ted and Eva's arc has been so far. But I will miss Maurice all the same. Ā  Ā
    • This is probably more for the classic thread, but for me this type of writing starts ramping up around the time of Taggert's arrival, where a character pays lip service to Sonny's flaws but there is no real analysis and we are ultimately meant to be on his side. And I think it just accelerates, as there always gotchas and outs. Like Laura blaming Sonny for Lucky's "death" when we knew Helena was responsible. It's the type of writing I find most manipulative because they play audience criticisms against them.Ā
    • I hope none of the theories of about June amount to anything and she just goes away. There’s nothing interesting about the story or character, and I think fans are constantly looking for deeper connections in everything.
    • You hit the nail on the head.Ā  Nope, you are not alone. I like her too.Ā
    • Out of these, I hope she isn't connected to Samantha and Tyrell. I just don't see a long term story there. I hadn't thought of a connection to Leslie but now that you bring it up...what if we find out June is Haley's sister and both were abandoned and raised in foster care. June ended up on the streets and Haley ended up with the Duprees. The mother who dumped them in foster care? Leslie. If they end up making Eva a stolen child of Nicole's, it would be a good way to develop some family for Leslie to help keep her on the canvas. She could ultimately make up with her kids and then she'd have access to Bill's money/power which could help her become a long term rival for the Duprees.
    • This was a HUGE story on the show for many years. Justin (Ross's brother) and Jackie Marler were Phillip's real parents. They showed a lot of the backstory in flashback when Jackie came on the show. Jackie caught Justin in bed with another woman. She was so devastated she divorced him immediately. She found out she was pregnant. I'm a little hazy on this--I THINK she told him she had an abortion, but maybe not. Maybe she just never told him she was pregnant. Anyway, she decided to give the baby up for adoption. She went to Europe (I think it was Amsterdam) to have the baby. She had the same doctor as Elizabeth Spaulding, who also was pregnant. The doctor was a personal friend of Alan's. He told Alan that Elizabeth's baby would be born dead and she would not be able to have more children. Instead of telling his wife the truth, Alan conspired with the doctor to do a baby switch. The doctor knew Jackie was planning to give her baby up, and she agreed to let the Spauldings have Phillip. Elizabeth woke up from the surgery and was told Jackie's baby was hers. Jackie almost immediately regretted it. She insinuated herself into Alan and Elizabeth's life so she could be near Phillip. They all became good friends. When Alan and Elizabeth returned to the states, they stayed with Jackie at first. Eventually, Alan and Elizabeth divorced and Jackie married him so she could be Phillip's stepmother. It was a disatrous marriage and they also divorced.Ā  Justin found out the truth. Justin and Jackie remarried. Elizabeth found out and wanted them to have custody of Phillip. Alan, of course, was furious but for some odd reason eventually agreed to it. (He did not know at the time Justin and Jackie were the bio parents).Ā  Ross and Alan had kind of an up and down relationship over the years. Ross wanted to BE like Alan in the beginning. When he was married to Carrie they were actually close friends with Alan and Hope. Their relationship totally degraded when Alan was chasing Trish Lewis and she chose Ross instead. Yes, and he also did not approve of how Alan dealt with Phillip much of the time. So they never became friends again.
    • It just does not feel like Y&R anymore, even if a lot of the actors are familiar. It's just... completely lost, and I've neverĀ notĀ felt it couldn't be turned around until now and the past few years. Stunt castings (Colleen Zenk) do not remedy the mess. At all. The focus is all wrong; there is no focus. None at all.
    • 1) Ross and Alan had a history aside from Phillip. In the early '80's Alan torpedoes Ross' campaign for DA in retribution for Trish Lewis leaving him and falling for Ross. Ross then assisted Alex in kicking Alan out of Spaulding. Then in the late '80's, Vanessa and Ross break up over her working at Spaulding with Alan, and she's briefly engaged to Alan. Then Alan shot Phillip accidently, and well....you get (part) of the picture.Ā  Phillip trusted Ross, and their closeness really chafed at Alan. I do not think Ross really initially held Alan adopting Phillip against him. Jackie had lied to Justin and had the baby in secret.Ā  Jackie discovered Justin had had an affair and divorced him. When she came to town, she actually ended up marrying Alan to be close to Phillip. Jackie and Justin eventually remarried and had a daughter named Sam. Jackie dies, and Justin leaves town about a year later. Justin makes a brief return, but it's mostly tied to Sam and then Phillip leaves in '91. Justin leaves town again.Ā  Rick and Phillip patch up their friendship, although there are some other rough patches. 2) No, Rick and Fletch generally got along. But I don't recall them interacting much afterward either after the divorce. Meredith had left of her own accord, and Fletch and Rick drifted into other stories.
