B&B: Jacob Young, Justin Torkildsen or Kyle Lowder as Rick?

I started watchin B&B in 2002 when Torkildsen was playing Rick, and loved him. When he was recast with Lowder I was seriously pissed, especially because Torkildsen had recently said that he was open to a permanent return. It took about a year, but I eventually came to love Lowder's Rick and now I can't imagine anyone else in the role. I certainly can't picture Torkildsen's Rick with Taylor or Ashley.

Which actor was/is "your" Rick? Or did you like all three? Or do you just dislike the character?

I liked Young and Torkildsen. Lowder I never liked. There is something about him that just turns me off from the character all together.

Definitely Justin Torkildsen...I can totally see him as Rick the Son of a Bitch...but I'd probably see his point.

Lowder's Rick is too flamboyant and a straight up prick.

Jacob Young...Rick was a dumb rich kid. He played that well and I thought he had good chemistry with Susan Flannery.

Jacob: The best looking/hottest

Justin: Probably the one I "liked" the best if like means having affectionate feelings for the character

Kyle: The best fit for B&B. Let's face it. His Rick is basically Ridge 2.0 (now with less waffling and more [!@#$%^&*]), the acting, the histronics, the square look. I liked Justin, but if he had stayed Rick's fate would probably have been Thorne 2.0. B&B proves that the only way a character can survive for any prolonged period of time is by being an [!@#$%^&*] (see: Deacon, Nick and now Rick). And B&B desperately needs younger characters who can stay around. Regardless of whether they are a-holes or not. It's not like the older characters aren't all a-holes too.

Jacob Young by far. Hated Torkidsen in the role. He was too much of a pretty boy. Lowder is good but hate the writing for him

Loved Young, too. He gave Rick a vulnerability and made you believe that he was a kid raised in a sketchy family enviornment (dad was relatively absent and his mother/stepfather were on again off again). He was always searching, looking for love, and just a little peace in his life, given the turmoil Ridge and Brooke's relationship caused him. His Rick was the last sweet, loving, vulnerable version of the character. I'll never forget the scene of JY's Rick confronting Taylor on tryng to bust up his family and then telling her what a pipe dream she was living to think that Ridge would love her forever.

JT tried to do the same, I think, but he created a Rick that I thought was arrogant, and stupid. His Rick was most stupid when he was trying to portray himself as 'tough' or 'strong'. He just didn't physically fit the role, for me. I was always waiting for his voice to crack. Too much baby face. He just never seemed to 'fit in'. I think the writers wrote that character based on the strength of the actors and he was by far, again- IMO, the weakest actor of the three.

I have a hard time figuring out if I dislike Lowder in the role because of the plot, or his approach to it. His Rick is the big angry baby that JT's Rick started. It's overkill. KL's Rick is just less stupid, and angrier. I like some of Lowder's choices - he makes Rick a real SOB with the smirking, and gloating, and the same time he has a tendency to ham it up a bit too much and it annoys me.

I don't really have a favorite. They are all, in their own way, special and appropriate for the times they were on.

But I'd never want to see Jacob Young back in the role.

Jacob Young. He was a young cutie. Justin reminded me too much of an under-developed teenager and his love scenes with Adrienne looked like child pornography. Kyle, seems ok but I only catch the odd episode of B&B lately so it is hard to judge.

    • Thanks for that. It was great to see her in an interview. She's very likable. Although it was somewhat confusing. What new soap is she talking about going on audition for in 1973. Was it The Young and the Restless? The editing around that part was weird and choppy. I felt like there was a chunk missing or something. And I'm not sure why she was saying she got colorectal cancer from HPV and said it's because she never got the HPV vaccine but then said she's never had anal sex. I'm not a doctor but that didn't seem to make any medical sense. I don't know. Maybe I'm tired. It just seemed like some of this interview didn't make sense.
    • If it helps any, the last script cover from the Elman papers that I have is from episode #3,736 airdate November 15, 1977. Writers are the Hollands with Frank Salisbury.
    • B&B really does look incredible. The lighting and the polished sets have made a significant difference how visually appealing the show is now.
    • I found the problem with the Labine era was that the show lost some humour when the Labines came on and it could be dull. They also didn't seem to understand some of the characters. As others have said, it looks fantastic in comparison to the next regime but I just remember boredom being the primary response.
    • Something I didn't realize: Frank Ashmore, who played Monica's investigator Corrigan in 1981, was also Victor, the third guy in the cockpit, in Airplane!
    • Thanks, maybe I will skim through those episodes.  I have previously binged late 1985 through early 1987; April-June, August 1992 (I skipped Carlo Hesser murder trial), Jan-March 1995 and I began watching in 2006. I just struggle to stay consistent with routines especially binging routines haha
    • I could've sworn we went over the Bobbie thing a while ago, and saw her introduced to Rick and Lesley as "Nurse Barbara" in very late '77? Or was that early '78? I know the clip is online. Jackie always credited Marland with creating her IIRC.
    • Thanks.  Loon Lake - very on the nose. With that "dad" outfit Bo looks even more like Cassie's father...
    • Luna parachutes herself into Llanview at the end of September 15th 1991.
    • That lengthy flashback does make me wonder if she threw out a lot, but I agree it may have been too easy an urban legend. Would these have been her very first episodes? I imagine you could feel the big difference when Bobbie arrived, alongside the Quartermaines filing in, the return of Heather, and Lesley/Rick/Monica/Alan heating up. It does remind me that there must have been some dud moments in the 60-minute format we just don't see because little of the period is available in full.  I wonder how much longer the Dantes lasted under Marland.  David Hamilton is so disgusting. I appreciate the show making him disgust as some shows when they have stories about older men or women manipulating teens aren't as honest.  I can't see this Rick being friends with him. Chris Robinson's Rick, on the other hand, I could believe.
