I'm seeing this with the Liam Neeson outrage. People say that Northam should've "defused" the photo and been honest about it but here's Liam Neeson trying to be honest about something he now knows was wrong and he's still being vilified. We can use these things as teachable moments if people would just take a breath.

Literally no one asked Liam Neeson about this and at a press junket to promote a movie just seemed like a strange arena to be making this confession.  Neeson is Roman Catholic...he couldn't find a good priest to make a confession?

The U.S. desperately needs some type of Truth & Reconciliation forum, the way South Africa did post-apartheid.  South Africa certainly has its problems still, mostly rampant and unchecked corruption and income inequality but without the TRC, there's a good argument that society in South African would be paralyzed (and a lot more violent) had one never taken place.

These issues deserve open discussion, and there are teachable moments to be had, I agree.  I just don't know if a press junket for a movie premiere is the arena in which to do it.

Yeah, I don't know what made him think this was a good disclosure. But I'm talking about people on Twitter screaming "He thought about committing a hate crime!" Last I checked thoughts were just thoughts. If we start going after people for their thoughts then a whole lot of us are going to jail. I'm on enough blood pressure meds and anti-depressants without having to freak out about Liam Neeson's dark thoughts.

But seriously.  I agree that the moment to make that sort of confession was an odd one.  However, like you, @marceline, I am not gonna hate on someone like Liam Neeson, just because, in the heat of anger, he thought about killing him some Black folks.  There's THINKING about doing something heinous, and then there's actually following through.  Neeson realized he was about to jump off a very steep cliff, so he pulled back, so I'm good.

I've seen more than one individual try and draw comparisons between Ralph Northam and Brett Kavanaugh, and that needs to stop as well.  For one thing, parading around in blackface (while doing the Moonwalk) is not the same thing as sexually assaulting women while [!@#$%^&*]-faced.  Blackface is not a crime -- it SHOULD be, but it's not.  (Just as white people even THINKING about doing the Moonwalk should be shot on sight grounds for immediate incarceration ("Don't even THINK about collecting your fitty bucks, just take yo' ass directly to jail!") but that's not.  But I digress.)

OTOH, sexual assault and perjury ARE crimes; and those who perpetrate those crimes should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Yep.  I don't feel TOO sorry for these individuals, because, well, karma and all that.  But, you're right: they'd still vote for that man even now, so why bother even listening to their fake outrage?

I think part of Fairfax's problem is that he's living in an age when, thanks to social media and the like, people demand answers and they demand them yesterday.  There's literally zero time for public figures (such as Fairfax) to stop, take a breath, gather one's thoughts, consult a brain trust or two, and then decide the best course of action.  The longer you go w/out reacting to the allegations, it seems, the more guilty-as-hell that you look.  That's how you end up making the kind of WTF, possibly career-ending statements that Fairfax has made.

It's just like when a celebrity dies and people get their feelings hurt because so-and-so didn't respond to the news the SECOND it broke.  Chill the [!@#$%^&*] out, people.  Not everyone in this world has the luxury of sitting on their Twitter or Instagram feed.  Believe it or not, but some folks actually have lives.

Co-sign. I just don’t have the bandwidth to get upset about that. He was totally naive to think that wouldn’t have been a self-inflicted wound in this climate especially, though. (Not that it would have gone over well before, but still.) Speaking only personally, I appreciate the brutal honesty.

In this particular case it seems like one of those nominations that is meant to be a "gotcha" to liberals, as she is a woman and a minority. And the media will dutifully push a narrative of "Democrats in disarray" and of how Democrats will be seen as racist and sexist if they don't support her.

Oddly enough the hard right senator from Iowa also seems critical of her (although she will vote for her in the end, of course), which kind of steps on their narrative.

Quote from MLK

"This country has socialism for the rich, and rugged individualism for the poor."

We have massive socialism in this country. Just not for the regular people.

Socialism good

- Create endless military actions to keep the likes of Raytheon and Lockheed Martin in business(must keep those weapons lines humming)

- Have a lopsided judicial system and highest incarceration rate in the western world to keep the private prison contractors like Core Civic in business. And who do people think is managing all those border camps setup along the border. So you create a fake crisis that leads to those private prison contractors keep humming

- Massive tax breaks that leave the mega rich and corporations having to pay basically zilch(welfare) while selling to the middle class a MAYBE tiny tax break(although now we see peoples taxes have gone up) to - well not do anything.

But providing 300 million people affordable healthcare is bad "socialism"

    • Whoa. She should have fought like hell to get that. Was it the greatest show ever? No, but it had a fantastic cast and was practically guaranteed to last multiple seasons because of its star power. Could have certainly led to bigger and better things. If it had flopped she could have always gone back to soaps. Judith Light broke through on a sitcom where she was basically second banana to Tony Danza. That grew into a very busy and distinguished career. The woman is still regularly booked to this day.
    • I could understand her being frustrated by the fact that she'd been in the business 10+ years at that point, and probably couldn't even get in the door. But then again, she'd already gone out for pilot season once (that we know of) and she and  her agent knew a 35-ish woman had a very difficult time in Hollywood. I know she did a few guest spots, but other than Designing Women, nothing I saw--not even a Murder She Wrote, and that show had tons of ex-soapers on it. I mean, God bless Marilu Henner, but even having been on Taxi, she couldn't get arrested for years either.
    • I didn't rewatch that period, so I'm not really sure how much Bill is on. I recall something about him living at the boardinghouse. I think Van made Matt his guardian, and why she didn't name Josh would be a mystery to me, other than the HW decided they needed to keep Bill in Matt's sphere. Nola is also his aunt, although they don't know each other well, and Van wouldn't have trusted her anyway. There's Dinah---but she's unreliable. Billy gets out of jail around NYE.

    • That's on Kimmer. As someone posted above...she was offered roles in pilots but she would be part of an ensemble or supporting. She didn't want that so she came back to GL. I don't know what she thought would happen..someone offering her "Here's Kimmer!" or The "Zimmer Comedy Powerhouse Hour" variety show..but her housefrau fans did not have the same pull in HW as they did on the soaps. Forbes and Watros knew that you had to take small parts to get noticed ands start a career in primetime. I know she was in consideration for the wife in Evening Shade, but when you go up against Marilou Henner, the soap diva looses. I could see her frustrated in a role like that, where she has to be the understanding wife with a bit of sass, but she could have made it work, if it wasnt for her huge ego.  I think it would have been an issue haveing all the powerhouse comedy actors surrounding...(lets face it..Alice Ghostly woudl have wiped the floor with her...) but it would have been a good launching padd.
    • Oh good, so I don't have to wait too long haha. I'm glad she cares about seeing Bill graduate. I'm guessing I'm in for a bumpy ride between Bill and Matt, if he's going to be his caretaker? Who else could it be, maybe Josh?

    • Maeve makes a few sporadic appearances, but returns full-time the next spring/summer. She's back in time to see Bill and Michelle graduate, although she skulks around town and wasn't going to tell anyone she was alive. She comes back wearing this HUGE hat---which was a throwback to the old Vanesaa. lol.
    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
