Debunking the rumors and outright lies about Hurricane Helene and the relief efforts

the Charlotte (North Carolina) Observer has a regular feature called "Reality Check".  From the blurb:
      "Reality Check
NC Reality Check reflects the Charlotte Observer’s commitment to holding those in power to account, shining a light on public issues that affect our local readers and illuminating the stories that sets the Charlotte region apart. Email [email protected] "

Here's a new Reality Check article:
"Helene fact check: Here are the rumors and the reality in Western North Carolina"

        ^ Well worth reading.
Some of the rumors and lies are insane, such as Marjorie Taylor Greene's nonsense.
But also other lies that might seem reasonable to the naive,
either because they are carefully crafted lies that *seem* real, or because the lies have been claimed as true by someone they believe, or simply because these lies have been repeated so incessantly.

It's good to have the facts onhand when talking with friends/relatives/neighbors who sincerely believe this garbage.

Any conversation we can have with anyone, if it changes one vote --- that one vote could make a difference in a local or national election.

Another "Reality Check" feature (fact-checking article from the Charlotte Observer)

"Starlink reconnects Western NC reeling from Helene. Who gets credit becomes political."
(bringing Starlink internet to the region after the hurricane damaged the local Internet infrastructure)
          https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/business/article293356009.html

The article says that Trump falsely claimed credit, saying that he requested the units from Elon Musk, and a Republican congressmen claimed Trump got Musk to do it.
But FACT: actually FEMA had already requested Starlink for this purpose and the system was already in N.C. when Trump made his claim.

It also says that *previously* (months or years ago) there had been a grant application to provide Starlink to the region.  Now, Republicans and rumormongers are blaming Biden admin for denying that application back then.
FACT: the reason the grant was denied back then:

After Starlink filed that application, the FCC determined that it didn’t qualify for funding. According to a letter from the FCC chairperson, the agency found that Starlink:

          • Couldn’t provide internet at the required speed set by the FCC.
          • Would have imposed “high start-up costs on rural consumers,” requiring subscribers to buy a $600 dish to access internet.
          • Proposed using some funds to provide internet to places like parking lots and road medians, which are not underserved rural households like the program intended.

            Edit. My error.
My intention was singular, not plural -- the autocorrect changed it to congressmen from congressman, as the article referred to a specific person.
But the bigger error I made was that the article
actually says that a N.C. Republican *state senator* claimed this.
            Not a congressman.

Yikes that I messed up in relaying a fact-check!

(I mean we already know that Republican U.S. congresspersons are telling lies, but it's important that I not add to the misinformation!)

The legendary Sally Field shares her abortion story. Warning: This gets considerably detailed about her horrific experience and is not for the faint of heart.

                      Watching/listening, I cried a lot.

Then I pictured Norma Rae standing on the table holding up a Kamala sign.

There seems to be a lot of butt hurt males over at TwitX because Kamala Harris dared to go on the Call Her Daddy podcast as above.

The same people who were roasting Harris for not doing more press are now saying it's inappropriate for her to go on podcasts during the Helene aftermath. And of course she is still being attacked over not doing enough media...or not doing the right kind of media. It's a full court press, likely because they think if they push hard enough they can get Trump the "mandate" he is now demanding.

Autocorrect can be a plague (mine changed that immediately to plaque) but it is still strange to me that Politico let "neigh on" get through for "nigh on". How about "nearly" if "nigh on" is too hard?

                                    ALL: Sexiest men on soaps

I've said it many times, but the young men of DOOL and Passions from 1999-2004 helped me understand that liking guys wasn't a phase. That said, the shows did tend to over-indulge. I revisited some of the Salem Stalker era and it's like every episode seemed to have some combination of Jason Cook, Kyle Brandt, Eric Winter, and/or Kyle Lowder shirtless or in their underwear.

Yeah, it's gonna suck when they sacrifice Lulu for Dante/BLQ.

                                    GH: Classic Thread

                                    Week Eight, Part II (Conclusion)
Sean Swindles the Quartermaines: Despite Laurelton using up most of the week's oxygen, this storyline still had a significant surge. Quentin Quartermaine, single again, reconciles with Celia. She's once again her dad's sole heiress, and will get annual trust fund payments, too. Edward and Alan fear that Celia and Jimmy Lee's independence (in a manner of speaking) means they can take on Sean themselves.
Monica: "Alan, if the situation were reversed, wouldn't you and Edward do exactly the same thing to Jimmy Lee?"
Alan: "What does that have to do with anything, Monica? Of course we would do that. It's business. Whatever works."
Monica: "And every man for himself, right?"
Monica tells Sean, who lets Dimitri know that Pilar's role is to undermine Jimmy Lee and Celia. Once that's done, Monica admits that she's scared about how fast things are going with her and Sean. She doesn't want to throw out the relationship. In fact, she wanted to have both Sean and her life as a Quartermaine, which she thought was safe and sound. Disgusted by Alan's lack of morality in business and certain that extends to love, Monica says being with Sean is where she wants to be.
Speaking of missing morals, consider that on Friday, Edward wants to have Jimmy Lee arrested as part of a scheme to keep him in line. It's moments like this where I'm curious if Papa Q ever thought to himself, "Well, no wonder Tracy was willing to let me die."
Anyway, Dimitri stalls Celia, Pilar cozies up to Jimmy Lee, Jimmy Lee goes to take a shower, Pilar gets into bed, Jimmy Lee comes out in just a towel ... and Celia catches the compromising situation.

Mike's Paternity: Jeff's allowed to stay with the Webbers, even though Mike comes thisclose to preventing it. The social worker has to take both of the youths' feelings into consideration. Even though Mike's mad about sharing his room and school supplies with Jeff, and initially complains to the social worker. he still eventually does the right thing and walks back his griping. Soon after, Ginny stands up to both Mike and Derek. Mike's grounded, Derek can stay out of it, Mike's forbidden from hanging around the studio, Ginny doesn't want to hear it from Mike, and if Derek doesn't stop trying to influence Mike against Ginny and Rick, she'll get a court order. "Listen, I am sick and tired of playing games with him. It is high time that you and Mike figure that out." Go Ginny!

Frisco and Felicia: Along with talking about Laurelton, they get some romantic/comic relief material on Thursday. Frisco throws out his back, and nobody at the Brownstone will let him go to the police academy. "Help me! I'm being held prisoner! In my own house!" On Friday, Frisco's well enough to do some barely subtle snooping and eavesdropping.

                                    Other thoughts:
-- Trixie's still around, albeit offscreen. Ruby says she's got to get back to Kelly's, or else Trixie will quit. The great Jessie Brewer and Dan Rooney drought continues.

It's cheap looking b/c it is cheap and quite honestly most of the poses are not flattering to the actors.

Infinity was a group that wanted to take over Sampson Industries. Long story short, because of Kyle taking over Lewis, and Kyle claiming to be HB's son (HB even lies and tells him he is, even though the truth is that HB and Sally are Billy's parents, not HB's wife Martha. It makes Billy and Kyle maternal half-brothers. Kyle's father is another former lover of Sally's.) he and Billy are enemies. Billy's lost his job, starts gambling and drinking too much and is in danger of losing his and Van's home. Kyle's friend David, who's his second in command, is part of Infinity and decides to use Billy's natural hostility to program him to kill Kyle.
It nearly works. The music video, featuring Mindy and the Infinity symbol is played at Mindy's reception. Billy shoots at Kyle, but hits David. In the confusion, David is about to shoot Kyle himself, but hits Maeve, Kyle's former lover and Reva's rival. David's shot and killed by his lover Suzanne (played by Frances Fischer). Billy goes on trial, but is saved when Beth and Jackson play the music video (that has the Infinity symbol in it) and a trance-like Billy raises his finger (like one would a gun) and starts mumbling "must kill Kyle" and "I don't want to shoot my brother" or some such.
It's a lot more complicated, of course, and it's kind of infamous among GL fans as a bad story (before Clone Reva, it was probably the most egregious example of GL trying to jump into GH/DOOL territory). It's a lot plot-heavy, and involves a lot of disposable characters, but it is grounded in a family conflict. And those aspects are more relatable.
Re: "golden era" of GL. As you've figured out, there are probably several. I think the Long/Curlee era (mid-89 to mid'93) was the best mix in terms of story and acting. Most of the stories flow organically and build on each other. There's a mix of characters both generationally and from different eras for the viewers. The stories are grounded, not shock for shock's sake, and for the most part avoids trying to copy trends.
The Marland and first Long era have lots of upside, (the Marland era with Morgan/Kelly/Nola is what hooked me on soaps in general, and Long with the Lewises). I haven't seen much of the Dobson era (or don't remember it) but I'm intrigued by what I have seen, and it has characters I recall, like Rita, Evie, Jackie, Justin and of course Alan.
'86-'87 are rocky, '88 is a quagmire due to the writers strike, '94 is a mess, the mob/SanCristohell era grates. And '05 to the end is a sad decline.

A true miracle would be if this kidnapping made Stephanie interesting again. She was only watchable when she was a neurotic mess. Of course, Abigail Klein has the range and charisma of a lamp post, so it's probably a moot point.

I'm sorry to hear that. I hear about the "old" old times, but cannot participate. The only radio show I was able to listen to in real time (because I was alive then) was the CBS Mystery Theater that used to air during the 1970s. My brother and I would listen to those often.
I read about GLs more distant past, but that's all I can do. Disappointing. I occasionally see your comments and those of a few others here about how many people don't seem interested in GL's more distant past...it's tough to be when there's no first-hand memory and there's very little out there. Frustrating for you probably...melancholic for me.
Carry on, Reverend. And thank you.

Not the best choice to end on that bad acting audio.
Not much suspense anywhere to be found.
