IIRC even in that scene he says something like you know what I had to do to protect you and there was real desperation in the way he played it, which is where I first got the idea that Luke may have also been sometimes forced to participate with the male John’s. And as the years went on he would kind of allude to having to do more than pick pockets/swindle at cards. It always read to me as something Geary decided was part of the backstory for Luke and played with it.
I used to wish a man was rushed into the ER one day needing emergency surgery and while operating Bobbie would realize it was their father, and we would get a story where they fully explored Luke and Bobbie’s childhood. True to form at the time I would have had Bobbie ultimately forgive him, and not Luke. It would be Luke’s unraveling to even see the guy again, and forgiveness from him was never going to be on the table.
