From TV Guide July 20 1985. An article about actor's input into scripts and stories,

...

Not so Donna Mills, who's been known to go to the mat for her sexy, conniving Abby Ewing character on Knots Landing. "I will fight very hard for what I believe in for Abby," Mills says. As an example, she names a scene in which Galveston (Howard Duff), in typical chauvinistic style, advised Abby to keep her nose out of business matters and to stay home in the kitchen where she belongs. "The way it was originally written, they had Abby sort of meekly taking it all," Mills recalls. "I read that, and Isaid, 'Wait a minute. Abby wouldn't do that'."

So Mills called the producers and stated her case. "Ireally believe that the women out there who like and admire Abby or her guts would be offended by that scene. So I went in, and they totally changed it."

Mills says that the Knots producers are almost always receptive to her suggestions—but that doesn't mean clashes don't still occur. Just last season, it was proposed that Abby be the one who steals Val Ewing's babies, but Mills would have none of it. "I fought іt," she says, "because as bad as Abby can be, | didn't think she could be that bad. That's an unforgivable act." In the end, a compromise was reached: Abby had no compunctions about concealing information about the kidnapers until it became advantageous for her to reveal it.

It amazes me how Clint and Lisa Hartman Black have managed to stay together for so long in an industry where long-lasting relationships are anathema (sp?).

Something I was wondering about after recently rewatching a few season 2 episodes when they reaired on Plex’s soap channel the other day but what did everything think about Jane Elliot’s Judy Trent character?

I kind of wished that Knots had at least gotten some more mileage out of Elliot and I could’ve easily seen Mills and Elliot having a good feud for at least a season, but Judy was just an obstacle really for Abby.

I could picture Judy going fatal attraction on Gary during his later marriage to Abby.

Jane said in an interview that there were originally bigger plans for Judy, but the 1981 writers strike shortened Knots season 2 along with Judy's arc.

I love Judy's line to Abby "I'm not holding the check - you are!" Classic

I think was the actors strike, not the writers strike.

July 21-October 23, 1980 was the actors strike. Knots Landing season 2 was November 20, 1980 to March 26, 1981. April 11-July 12, 1981 was the writers strike.

Ah yes I found the quote “The job was supposed to go longer but the actors strike stopped production and shortened the length of the season, so my part got truncated’

One thing Knots and other soaps failed to do was look into the past and bring back characters.

eg Jeff Cunningham, Abby's ex could have easily turned up to see his kids and reconnect with Abby in some way.

Karen's brother Joe and a myriad of other characters could have returned for short stints to provide story for the long running characters, rather than always bringing in new people.
