Joan Van Ark appears in a promo/pilot for a cooking show hosted by actress Alaina Reed-Hall (Sesame Street & 227). The show must have not been picked up as I don't recall it airing. Reed-Hall passed away in 2009.

This week in 1968, it was announced that Disney had signed Michele Lee to two more movies after The Love Bug. One of them was to be "a big musical." I'm wondering if Michele was one of the women considered for Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

@Soapsuds Great video, thank you.

This was the first Donna Mills interview I've seen/read where she mentioned Ava Gardner arc, and it's another positive account of it.

Of the Golden Age Hollywood trio that had short arcs on CBS soaps in the 1980s, all accounts of Ava Gardner and Dorothy McGuire I've come across have been positive (believe me, if Dorothy McGuire was throwing diva demands at Y&R, we would've known about it) whereas there are accounts of Lana Turner allegedly throwing diva demands.

I've been ready for a re-watch, but with the streaming thing not done yet I decided to buy the first two seasons so I could start re-watching in good quality. I'm going to try to spread the episodes out to the end of the year in hopes it's released in November/December like Dallas was last year.

So far I've done the first three episodes of season one and I'm reminded at what a good job David Jacobs did of establishing the series. The self-contained format could be hit or miss on some of the primetime soaps, but it works really well here.

My biggest takeaways this time is how unique the character of Laura was from day one. The immediately establish Richard as a scoundrel with a lust for power and the way he disregards her is pretty amazing. It's episode two and we're already running into one of her previous hookups and Richard pressures her into sleeping with him to get ahead at work. Then when he finds out he manipulated her into thinking that isn't what he wanted which is how he maintains control of her.

Another thing I had missed in all my previous viewings is that Kenny was having an affair with Sid's daughter Annie. I think that's an interesting nugget to place in the pilot since Kenny and Ginger give us our first ever cliffhanger when Ginger learns of Kenny's affair with Sylvie. I was a big fan of these characters and hate we didn't get more from them. Kim Lankford mentioned that when they left the show the plan was to give them a Nashville set spin-off but James Houghton didn't want to do it which upset her. I would've enjoying seeing them in their element.

Laura was the heart and candor of the show. She kept everyone in check and would not hesitate to call anyone out and put them on blast. Season 6 Laura and Ruth scenes were the best. Laura departure is the point for me where Knots Landing starts going off the rails.

I never really got that feeling early on, although I haven't watched the episodes in a long time. I thought they had a natural connection that eroded over time. Val and Karen never felt as natural to me. Any time characters have to remind us what good friends they are, I am wary.

The way I always saw it was that Laura and Val were genuine friends and the Karen/Val connection came from Michele and Joan's love for each other. As the show started minimizing Laura's role, the relationship with Val was gone.

Karen's closest friendships tended to be with the men IMO. People like Richard or Gary. And of course Abby was a wonderful relationship for her.

    • I have this nagging feeling we think of different ones as the best! Care to fulfill my curiosity? Which are you thinking of?
    • the famous babyswitch. the best babyswitch imo
    • Yes, it has. It was seen in the episodes when Dani broke into the house while Hayley and Bill were on their honeymoon. Dani and a Fairmont Crest security guard were also shown outside the house's entrance. Bill and Hayley were seen in the foyer when they returned. I imagine the set will resurface when there's a need for it.
    • There is some kind of arrangement going on between Justin and Evie, who seems to be caring for Sam. I'm not sure, but she may even be living there with Justin and Phillip. Phillip inviting Evie at least makes a little more sense (if the guest list was limited to women Vanessa liked, it would've only consisted of Trish and Helena. lol)  Maybe it was more common to hang on to performers, back in the day? Instead of immediately kicking them to the curb? Evie hadn't had much to do after Chet was revealed to be her stalker. With Rita, Jackie and Ben gone, there weren't many on the canvas she'd really worked with, other than Ross. They could've pivoted her back to Ross, instead of letting him languish love-less for nearly a year other than goo-goo eyeing Amanda. Nowadays, there might've been a moment written Jordan and Janet, an eye-wink to the audience about them having previously worked together.
    • I 100% agree that Bill and Haley's set would work better as a bedroom. I also think it might have made more sense to give them a penthouse instead of a mansion. Realistically they aren't going to have the room for multiple mansions, even with the larger studios. A more open concept penthouse would've been fine. I also wish more people lived together. The age confusion kinda messes that up but I would at least have Chelsea living with Dani. If Martin were Anita and Vernon's child (as he should be), I'd have these families living together as well. By doing that, the space used for Martin and Smitty's house could be used to build a dining room for the Dupree home and I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to throw a couple bedrooms in as needed.
    • CBS primetime was such a mess in the 1990s. 1990/91 fourth consecutive third place finish. 1991/92 to 1993/94 some signs of life but it didn't last.  1994/95 to 1999/2000 another primetime mess era. 1995 the sale to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. The only bright spots were Touched by an Angel becoming a Top 10 show and Everybody Loves Raymond starting to show growth. CBS primetime would have a comeback in 2000 with the premieres of Survivor and CSI and Everybody Loves Raymond becoming a Top 10 show, and the rest is history.
    •  Thanks! For some reason I had misremembered ER and Chicago Hope going directly head to head but that may have been because of the hype about both shows.    Poor Connie Chung. She seem poised for success and possibly the next Barbara Walters. I don’t recall her co-anchor gig on the CBS Evening News was well received though. She kind of tanked her career moving into more a tabloid journalist role once at ABC and especially once she moved off network TV to CNN and later more infamously on MSNBC.
