I remember a news clipping of NBC trumpeting that Mel & Ethel had been signed to an exclusive contract by the network and would be working on one of their soaps. They never headwrote again, I don't think -  but did work on writing staffs of other soaps over the years.

I get the impression that they followed through on a lot of Marland's outlines as there weren't many radical changes in their tenure.

Here's another bit of nostalgia

That's a shame (although I certainly understand leaving for the movie gig).  I enjoyed watching Elliott, who seemed refreshingly natural and real as teenaged Billy.

So has there been any noticeable changes with the change of head-writer?  The changes were obvious when it went from the Pollacks to Cenderella to Depriest to Marland... so just curious if there was a noticeable change with these new writers?

I think in a few months time, Grover will take over.. and from what I read.. she made an effort to write a good show.. but was in over her head... we shall see if my impression of her will hold true.  I honestly assumed that Depriest would be lousy on this show and she was well above average.. and I assumed Marland would tighten up the show (since he wrote some strong hospital content on ATWT and GH)... and he was lousy on this show.

Most people on the soap boards are saying they don't see a noticeable difference, largely because the same dialogue writers are in place. The Brezes' writing credit is different from previous head writers. They're billed as "Story by Mel and Ethel Brez." If I remember correctly, Mel was one of three co-head writers on ATWT in the 90s.

Hi - I'm interested in these posts; I played Lynn Nelson on "Love of Life," under my prior name of Andrea Martin, and since had changed my name to Amanda Trees due to another actress in the media with the same name!  (I was advised to choose to be known under a different name, and kept my middle name of Christine the same.)  I played the half sister of Sandy Porter, played by Bonnie Bedelia.  Tammy Porter was the real mother I had searched high and low for, as she had to give me up at birth due to no way to support me and still follow her dreams of being in theater.  Lynn, a runaway teen searching valiantly for her mom, finally did find her - only to realize so many trials and tribulations in trying to work out a whole new relationship with her.  Vanessa Sterling stepped in and had me move into her home, thinking she could guide me into settling into life with a family.  Anyhow, over a period of time I noticed a few anthologies were written about soap opera history, and for some odd reason, my character was left out.  I was very active in the plot lines, and had many stories that were written involving all the other characters, so I'm just saying "hello" now, thinking to weave back together some of the tapestries of my life with you guys.  I'm doing music now, piano and writing, and singing.  My website is amandatreesmusic.com

Hi @Musical Soap Lady.  I found this on newspapers.com, from The Detroit Free Press.  Some folks in the Love of Life thread might remember you.  I didn’t start watching LoL until the 70s, unfortunately.  Would love to hear your remembrances.

Welcome @Musical Soap Lady!   I would love to hear about your years on LOL. Did you do any other soap roles? Were you Barbara Harper on The Doctors in 1968? What years were you on LOL?  I have you credited in 1965, but information about LOL is spotty.  (Cancelled Soaps Cast Lists and Character Guides Thread page 57).

Looking forward to hearing your stories.

How nice of you to post.

As you might have gathered, there are a few of us who appreciate the lost history of soaps.

Anything you can recall about your time would be most appreciated.

Yes, all the storyline you detailed has never been mentioned in histories of the show, so anything else you can add would be most welcome.

    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
    • I can see Kim being that way. Well, Kyle didn't have to say yes. LOL. The suicide attempt feels plot-driven. I don't know if even Long could've made it work. She'd spent so much time trying to make Reva and Kyle into a couple, it feels odd to just have them give up. Not to mention how odd it is to have Maeve agree to marry him. Re Charita---surely they could've at least tried  finding clips with who was still there. Maybe they wouldn't have been "big" moments, but surely she'd interacted with Ross, Vanessa, and Henry. Vanessa had dated Ed, FCOL. But Mo and Rick were there---surely they could've bothered to find some clips of her with them (and they did interact a fair amount) and used them. And with Ed they could've found some shot of her talking to him and just not cut to whoever was playing Ed in the clip. That to me is what feels lazy---they had more than a year to figure it out, and they went with a bunch of photos. If you were sort of centering it on Rick anyway---then find clips with them and use 'em.
    • I definitely think it's time to write off Nina for good. I think her killing Drew might actually be a good idea. She could completely lose it after losing both Sasha and Willow and she ends up murdering Drew and eventually she gets caught and sent away to prison for a long time.
    • I hope it's okay to post this here(as in from DC)
    • Quick question - did Christie and Leann share any scenes together in the '80s before Leann left the show?
    • This is the perfect way to encapsulate the situation. So many morally-reprehensible stories were foisted on the show and its characters in ATWT's dwindling years. Rape should never be used as a cheap plot device or in a way that degrades the victim. Jack's sexual assault was another heinous example of how nasty the the show's tone had become. The fact that people like Hogan Sheffer, Ron Carlivati, Jean Passanante, Charles Pratt, Dena Higley, etc., somehow end up winning awards for their material, decimates the credibility and integrity of the awards, IMHO. Soaps used to have a solid moral core and did not originally wallow in the gutter, rolling around in filth and depravity just to be cool, hip, campy, or whatever else modern-day PTB aim for. Thank you. Cruelty, degradation and misogyny are not components which lend themselves to successful soaps, which have always been predicated on warmth, family bonds, and providing a comforting haven for their audience. The genre has been crippled because the cynical and ignorant executives in charge understand neither the shows nor what the audience wants to see.
    • Beverlee was on a whole other level from Kim. It's not like they were in competition with each other. I get the feeling that Kim had a slight problem with the super-professional, serious cast members who just wanted everyone to be prepared and do the work, as she seems to like having fun on set. (She's made a few cracks about Chris Bernau being like that). Bev was definitely one of those. But they didn't work together that much. Yeah, they made her manic and also much weaker. She always had a vulnerability, but wanting to kill herself over that guy? No way. Not only that, he didn't leave her! She insisted he marry Maeve. When they did the tribute to Bert/Charita, the compilation of scenes with her showed how much the cast had been almost totally turned over in a relatively short period of time. Nearly every shot was of her by herself because most people she had worked with had been fired, left or been replaced. I assume they couldn't show her with people who hadn't been replaced, like Don Stewart, Elvera Roussel, or Robert Newman because they would have had to pay them for using their clips. It's dreadful to watch. Like she had no connection to the current show.
