In his book, Jed Allan talks about Paul Rauch hiring an young  actress to play against CC. Jed says she was there for 3 months and made his life a living hell. He said she was an angry woman who upset the cast and crew.

WHen he asked her why she took on the role, she replied that she was just killing time until something better came along. He mentioned she was living with a nice guy, a well known actor at that time.

They were glad to see the back of her and he says it was only the second time in his career he's had to deal with someone like that.

Who was that actress?

I’m pretty sure it was Wanda De Jesus (Santana). Jed was very vocal about how horrible she was to work with. If the Dobsons would have been allowed to bring back Gina Gallego like they wanted to this could have been avoided and Santana may have lasted until the final episode.

She was there for about 9 to 10 months... and she was involved with Jimmy Smits.

I will say that Santana did get a good exit where she decided to start over in a new city and on the flight out of Santa Barbara ends up being hit on by a good looking guy.. and she laughs/smiles as she looks out the plane window saying good bye to her past and hello to her future.

I am pretty sure Jed Allen did not keep a excel file of exactly how long the actors stayed on Santa Barbara so it is understandable if he was off by a few months.

Here is a link to an interview with Michael Brained.

In his autobiography Jed Allan said that he literally hated Wanda DeJesus (Santana), and in fact she did not seems to have an easy temperament. In your opinion, what makes her so unbearable? Do you have any anecdotes?

Wanda is a terrific flirt. On the surface she seemed serious, but that was only with the work. Like most good actors, you want to get things right...according to what you think is right. Certainly what you think is right will sometimes clash with what other actors will think is right, no? Wanda and I had a great working relationship, when she and Jed were bickering I would stay out of it. I could always get her to laugh, though. We were always having fun.

Ironically, I remember liking Wanda De Jesus as Santana and thinking she had good chemistry with Jed Allan.  That was a bright spot in an otherwise difficult time for SANTA BARBARA.

    • I found the reference in the AWHP synopses -- it was 1995 but not directly related to the loanshark.

    • One of the dumbest situations (Lando) ever. What audience member is going to invest in a storyline with a recast they don't like and a triangle where one character is short-term? It bombed as it should have done. So much of JFP's tenure just reeks of desperation. I don't get how someone could produce SB (which did have flaws but was often brilliant) but make so many terrible mistakes at GL.   I still think JFP would have worked better as a director and music supervisor. Her music work at SB was top notch.  It just seems that Rea was minimized during JFP's tenure because I can't imagine her okaying so many of these casting choices.

    • We see the same with GH, where Mark Teschner, the casting director, reportedly has less say since Frank Valentini took over. Some producers want to take over every aspect of their shows.  I think Lando may have been a CBS push.
    • No idea but she won Emmys & she was the Casting Director at the same time for both ATWT & GL. She hired Lisa Brown with no job for her. Then Marland made Brown his muse so he created both Iva & Nola for her. But, I think we know that Jill does what Jill wants.
    • I did notice a decline in the quality of the performers being cast once Betty R vacated/retired from her position. We would have been spared from the nightmares of some of the castings that dominated the show in the last decade or so of the soap. JFP was an example of someone, no matter the gender, who had no business being in the position they were in.
    • If Betty Rea was the casting director, why was so much of GL during JFP's reign cast by her? Walker, Deas, Crampton, Lando, etc. JFP takes credit for Dusay as well. What is the point of having a casting director, if you don't let her do her job? What happened when Rea left?
    • So much on here slips my mind but this is the first I remember hearing of Peterson's passing. Very sad. Nell was a thankless role, clearly set up for a cheating storyline with Frank, but Peterson did her best.  Betty Rea Rea was the casting director for the soap opera “Guiding Light” from 1970 to 1996 and simultaneously the casting director for “As the World Turns” from 1979 to 1983.
