Interesting that this guy says that no one was reading his article, and Kvitova is one of the most famous female tennis players in the world. Puts things into perspective as to why #TennisTwitter relies so heavily on manufactured drama with a handful of superstars and troublemakers like Nick.

Lots of good stuff in this interview, but this struck me in light of the Serena panic room incident from years ago.

This chart is hilarious. Look how dominant that first row was (Evonne and Tracy are the short-lived exceptions), which starts in the early ‘70s and goes well into the ‘90s. Then things just become a hash. The early-to-mid 2000s were at least super-competitive, but it wasn’t quite the merry-go-round we have now. I suppose one could argue that the constant turnover is exciting, but it’s hard for audiences to form attachments to players over time when success is so fleeting.

On one hand, the unpredictability of women's tennis adds a bit of excitement. You never know who's going to win the major titles.

On the other hand you don't get the same rivalries that you had in the old days, which kept people invested and interested. Navratilova vs Evert, Navratilova vs Graf, Graf vs Sanchez Vicario, Graf vs Seles. Everyone knew about them, even those who weren't that interested in tennis. But very few people will have their interest piqued by Osaka vs Barty, Muguruza vs Kvitova or Halep vs Pliskova.

Kenin. Wow. Such a confident player. Beating an in-form Bencic and saving championship points to do it.

I think if we had a happy medium like in the 2000s, where we did have good rivalries (Serena/Venus, Serena/Henin, Henin/Clijsters, Davenport/Venus, with Capriati, Mauresmo, Sharapova, Kuznetsova all in the mix), it would be better. I wasn’t around for Chrissie/Martina, but I can imagine it would have been fatiguing to see the same two women lifting trophies all the damn time (in the same way people tire of Federer/Nadal/Djokovic). I certainly got bored with Graf in the mid-‘90s.

I suspect we would have had a few withdrawals next year if Israel had won. I don't think many people would relish going to Jerusalem as things stand now. Not to mention it would have been a prime target for terrorist attacks.
    • And they've given us plenty. Sets, outdoor scenes, music licensing, etc. And that was the point of me using DAYS... so. It's obvious the casino set is not intended for long-term use, hence why it's likely it wasn't as evolved as the other community sets, etc.

    • I just had thought of how to save the Perkins family. (Inspired by Rituals) -- What if Marisa Perkins was Augusta Lockridge's sister? Fictionally, they could've both been local girls, one married rich and one married poor. Originally, I was going to suggest that Marisa be Sophia's sister, but then I realized Joe and Kelly would've been first cousins.  Of course, it would've truly inspired Sophia was if Rosa Andrade sister, with Rosa and Santana moving in to help CC raise the kids once Sophia disappeared.  While this could've avoided both gross CC and Santana affairs, the times were not right for a story about intersectional inequity.
    • https://www.instagram.com/p/DJxW5DLJLId/ Another World is my forever favorite soap opera. But it's finale is almost universally hated by its fans. What this is, is an edit where I've deleted everything I didn't like!!!
    • The Perkins family had potential to be a nice alternative to the more dysfunctional Capwells and wackier Lockridges... but I think a few factors did in the family. 1) Recasting of Joe Perkins 2) Bad casting of the Perkins Patriarch, and the one note writing for that character. 3) Lack of antagonistic interaction between the Capwells/Lockridges and Perkins.  (There was no awkwardness between Jade/Ted.. or CC disapproving of his son being friends with that Perkins girl, etc). 4) Wasting of Jade thus wasting the potential of the actress (which was realized on Days of Our Lives).  She had more potential than Laken oddly enough. The only member of the Perkins family that had appeal and a somewhat thought out story arc was Amy.
    • @GymnastGuyThanks for posting the three new Capitol 1985 episodes today. The two labeled March 12, and 13 are misidentified. The March 12 labeled one actually aired November 12 1985 which I figured out because Kenny Rogers' movie Wild Horses aired November 12th and it was announced over the "March 12" Cap credits. In addition, Craig Carlson is listed in the April credits but not the March. Craig left Capitol sometime after July 1985 before he rejoined OLTL in the credits by October 15, 1985; he was replaced on Cap by Radcliffe and Hamner. In these posted episodes Radcliffe/Hamner names appear in the March 85 episodes but not in the April.
