It looks like it stems back to Stefano and Shawn's childhood. The first casting call was for Shawn, age 7-10, recently from Ireland and speaks with an Irish accent. Maybe something happened with the parents of Stefano or Grandpa Shawn, and one of them saw something. I'm sure those 2 boys aren't going to be the only ones in the flashbacks. Until they are revisited as adults, they will always be seen colored through those memories. I'm happy to know that we will see through those colors and how it became what it did. Sounds great to me.
