Y&R this week Nikki learns she is pregnant. MTS real life pregnancy written in Nikki's storyline. Supercouple Days one year into the Steve/Kayla years and its paying off. I wonder how much of it is due to change in competition. Bo/Hope years were facing off w/ strong All My Children, rising Y&R, middle ranked As the World Turns. Steve/Kayla years were facing off w/ strong Y&R, not yet a hit B&B, weakened All My Children.

In recent years not so much. There was that boxing lesson in the 1994 episode we saw during the classics.

I thought they were gaining lost ground with Pamela Long return as HW. Perhaps the drop is due to strike material.

One month into the Writer's Strike so I think we're starting to see strike material on screen now. As the World Turns I believe around this time was Julianne Moore departure but I haven't found the exact date of the last episode of her original run anywhere. I thought it was very classy of her to return for one episode when As the World Turns was coming to an end. Fun fact, her return episode April 3, 2010 was 25 years 1 day from her debut episode April 2, 1985.

It's so funny how the fortunes of CBS daytime and primetime were in opposite directions in 1987/88. Daytime we saw Y&R regularly finishing #1, As the World Turns going strong, Guiding Light appears to have gained some lost ground with Pamela Long's return as HW, B&B was not yet a hit. Primetime we saw CBS entire lineup tanking and it was about to enter third place mess era.

March 3, 1988 Y&R Nina Arvesen debut. March 15, 1988 Y&R Chance's birth. Writer's strike began March 7, 1988. We'll start seeing the impact of the strike soon. B&B one year and clearance hasn't really moved (94% to 93%).

Yet somehow is not cracking the top 5. Y&R, the ABC big three, Days are all jockeying for position in the top 5. I know supercouple Days was popular, but I don't believe supercouple Days was a better show than Marland As the World Turns.

That way the kids could watch after school instead of just on school breaks. All those middle schoolers and high schoolers that came on board during the Steve/Kayla years would be mid-40s to early 50s now, and I'm sure a good number of them are still watching.

Mid-1990s Nikki was in her snooty lady of the manor phase and she needed to be knocked down a peg or two. Victor reminded her of her past by telling her she was considered a gold digger once. Nikki was introduced as a troublemaking promiscuous girl, became the OG ho turned housewife, then snooty lady of the manor. Now she's a messy matriarch/grande dame.

100% this. Storyline shows promise, execution is bungled. Wash, rinse, repeat.

1987 what a mess with pre-emptions and Nielsen people meters. 1988 might be a mess too with the Writer's Strike. As we all know, 1988 Y&R ties General Hospital for #1. Also in 1988, Live with Regis and Kathie Lee goes national in September, so watch the clearances of the bottom tier soaps.

Knots Landing
@Vee Love your recaps. The final 10 episodes of 1984/85 season were the peak of Knots Landing to me. Laura/Ruth rivalry was everything. I lived for the scenes where Laura called out Ruth and put her on blast. I think Ava Gardner appeared in the right amount of episodes. Ruth's story arc felt complete to me. Ava Gardner arc on Knots Landing was quite the contrast to Lana Turner arc on Falcon Crest. Ava was by all accounts well-liked by Knots Landing cast whereas Lana was allegedly throwing diva demands during her Falcon Crest arc. Remember too that Ava admitted that she took the part on Knots Landing for money so she was really in no position to throw diva demands. William Devane mentions Ava Gardner in this interview: https://www.avclub.com/william-devane-on-the-grinder-24-alfred-hitchcock-an-1798285513
