Doctor Who
With the 60th anniversary coming upon us I was completely shocked and sadden to come upon this haunting final message from the This Week in Doctor Who column back in 2011 @Vee @DRW50 https://twidw.doctorwhonews.net/archive.php?edition=2011-07-23 02:31:09 I’m actually surprised this site has all of Benjamin F. Elliot’s columns archived as it was one between a Yahoo group and the old Outpost Galifrey website. I use to converse with Ben regularly when KNME aired Tom Baker movie arcs regularly 1997-2000 as well as KBDI airing Perteee & Baker the during the wilderness years. The tragedy of the late Benjamin F. Elliot’s as much as hard work he put it inton it column was he didn’t foresee the rise of streaming services or of reconstruction or lost episodes i.e. Shada airing on Pluto TV like no strike happened. I don’t know what became of Elliot and he and so many other long term Who bravados liken Andrew Pixley, DV Blunt and of course the JNT crew were pushed aside.

Days return?
LOL I remember that. In this case I wouldn’t be surprised if Nick Fallon’s mutilated ghost reappeared again to drag Gabi to hell for her exit a la the ending of Jason Goes to Hell lol. Would be fitting lmao. 🤣

Several years ago PBS did try airing the Peabody Awards ceremony but there was just no audience for it so they stopped. The Tony Awards on CBS at least gave Broadway a night to shine but of course usually as its been last two decades appears to only focus on the biggest name draws.

Season 6 was definitely a big improvement as it did stabilize the show and saw a minor to moderate upswing again, but of course the season had a good three-four major overreaching story arcs that lasted all season long. Season 7 was fun overall but yeah there is a point where the short arcs really stopped working. Leslie Caron should have been on all season as her mysterious Nicole character’s arc got wrapped up too quick. Maggie’s alcoholism struggle was blink and you’ll miss it. Losing Chase and Cole did leave a hole. I didn’t miss Chase much but I wish they had gotten Cole to return full time instead of that guest arc. Then there was that strange story of Lance and Raquel Welch’s daughter, who he discovered was not only on Angela’s payroll but was pregnant with Tony’s kid. Season 7 ended on a high note and Frelich was in the works to bring back Foxworth and Dalton, which neither return panned out (personal reasons for Foxworth as partner Elizabeth Montgomery had first got ill).

LOL I’ve been amazed that CBS still airs the Tonys after all these years to very low ratings. This also reminded me of the disastrously hysterical Golden Globes press conference back in 2008 during the last strike. 🤣

Falcon Crest
I know it’s polarizing but I thought the crime noir identity that the Jeff Freilich era established seemed to work well for the show. I’m sorry that Lorimar felt the need to bring FC “back down to earth” by bringing back Stern & Black who promptly ruined it. The Dallas with grapes premise could obviously take the show only so far, so I think that’s why the New Globe storylines as well as Richard’s international business dealings ended up driving a lot of the show’s plots. In addition to being an old gentry landowner Angela was a Katharine Graham in a sense as she controlled a powerful newspaper and bought a lot of influence of politicians and such which really established her reputation.

Elena smashing that picture was the most interesting thing Elena has done in 3 years since having that romp with Nate on the examination table. Knowing JG it may be another 3 years before Elena does anything of interest again.

The biggest problem of this story is how chaotically (and idiotically) the story is written. No coherent or linear flow at all. And now all of a sudden half of Genoa City knows Phyllis faked her death? It’s biggest offense is the utter lack of any dramatic flair and suspense. I knew when I first read about Summer learning Phyllis is alive that this story was going to make Summer stupid again and it sure has which is unfortunate. It be so much better if Summer had just been left in the dark completely and still out for revenge.

Ehh given the fact Neil was completely destroyed when Pratt turned him into a bloodthirsty villain to which Neil was never able to recover from nor did any subsequent writers take the opportunity to redeem Neil and spent his last two years as a sad lonely caricature, I can accept the slight retcon/restoration to a pre-2015 Neil’s character.

Unfortunately it came at the expense of also canceling East New York. Go figure: https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/east-new-york-canceled-cbs-1235604861/amp/

Eh today’s Neil tribute just fell flat. I was wondering why it took 2/3 of the episode before Malcolm made his entry. I mean it was good to see original YoHarmony and Malcolm here but the appearances felt ever so brief and abrupt I really couldn’t savor the moment. PS welcome back Khan!

Did I hear Wyatt right about him being single? 🤣🤣🤣 Hope having DID would be a horrible idea. Plus I could see Thudley giving her alter names like Faith, Grace, Love, Charity etc. Just no.

I really hated Holden as a character there from 1993-1995 always acting like a smug and pompous jerk during that time period. One of the main reasons why I preferred Damian and Lily as the better couple versus another reunion of Holden and Lily. I too felt Holden’s attitude towards Iva was unnecessarily cruel. Thankfully all those annoying Holden pop-up visits came to an end with Holden being off screen for a couple years and the character was reset upon return. Aaron being with Julie was bad writing as well given everything that happened with Julie, Pete, and Jenny. It also gave way to the atrocious off-screen writing given to Julie in the 2000’s, first of Julie being a raging alcoholic groupie or something and then later of Julie being terminally ill. I recall right the main reasons for John and Lucinda’s divorce were the whole Duke situation, Lucinda’s lack of support for John during Andy’s alcoholism and jealousy of the time John spent with Kim, and ultimately John having an affair with Susan out of spite.

Falcon Crest
I’m not sure if it was planned or not, although Wyman really wanted her off the show and character killed. I’ve read that the coffin was also supposed to hold Chase’s body as Foxworth was already wanting off the show. I’m not sure entirely what happened between Wyman and Turner, it seems there was beef between them long before the show. While Turner may have tried to play innocent in the press, I have read Turner had very strange and aloof behavior on set which turned off the rest of the cast.

Apparently Sony and CBS just couldn’t come to a financial agreement despite being on a ratings upswing recently. Meanwhile CBS is looking to reboot Matlock(LMAO!) in its place: https://deadline.com/2023/05/swat-canceled-cbs-6-seasons-reasons-no-season-7-1235357982/amp/

Backstage details about that famous season two cliffhanger: There were nine different versions of the confession scene filmed for the cliffhanger (re: Carlo Agretti's murder). Instead of Julia's confession, the various drafts of the script of # 040 contain alternate confession scenes with Lance (b & w scene still above), Melissa, Richard, Diana, Phillip, Angela, Chao-Li and Cole. Even the cast members themselves did not know which version the producers would choose until the episode was broadcast — except ABBY DALTON, who was called by supervising producer BOB McCULLOUGH the day it was scheduled to air. The killer was chosen on input from CBS, but the network did not dictate that it had to be Julia. So CBS did not know for certain who the producers chose as Carlo Agretti's killer until just minutes before it aired. LORIMAR delivered the final print of the season finale to the network, CBS Television City on Beverly Boulevard in Hollywood, the night it aired. CBS, of course, sent the episode to New York via satellite at the last minute, where it aired first due to the different time zones in the U.S. From the alternate versions, here is each confessing character's motive for the murder of Carlo Agretti (unused segments): Lance: "He [Carlo] kept pushing me. First the marriage. Then he threatened to cut Melissa out of his will. He was pushing me around... You [Chase] were pushing me around... She [Melissa] was even pushing me around. Then, at the baby shower, he [Carlo] threatened me. I wasn't going to stand for that. Not after what I'd already put up with..." Melissa: "He was no father. I was nothing more than another bargaining tool to him. He wanted Falcon Crest so badly that he traded me in marriage to Lance. Then he threatened to cut me out of his will. That didn't give me much choice. With him gone, I controlled the Agretti Vineyards, I finally had my own source of power." Richard: "Carlo Agretti was a hypocrite who spurned me in public while privately trying to bleed me dry. I offered him double the market value for his property. But he resented that and threatened to expose my own father as a Nazi. I couldn't let him do that." Diana: "It was my only option. I had orders to get the Agretti Vineyards at any cost, and 'the company' has never recognized any limits. Results are all that count. There was an agreement... Richard had to deliver the entire California wine industry to 'the company' or give up any hope of independence. I wanted him to survive out here... to succeed. I was in love with him. I wanted him free... for me..." Phillip: "It was the only thing left to do. Agretti had fought Angela for years. He was preparing to sell out to Richard. That would've been disastrous for Falcon Crest. With Carlo and Richard both clawing away at her, there was no time for the niceties of legal maneuvering or negotiating. I had to expedite matters. Angela has given her life to Falcon Crest, and... you see... I love her..." Angela: "Carlo got exactly what he deserved. He sealed his own fate when he threatened to cut Melissa out of his will. I have no regrets. He would've done the same to me. You [Chase] don't understand anything, do you? From the time I sat on my grandfather's knee... until now, I was the chosen one to care for and enhance the legacy of Falcon Crest. Your father had no aptitude for that challenge. My strength, my dedication covered for his weakness. And then you came here to change all that? You're nothing but an opportunist who still has his head in the clouds at thirty thousand feet. You don't have the faintest idea what it takes to maintain the greatness of Falcon Crest!" Chao-Li: "Mrs. Channing took me in when I was a young man with no place else to turn. She made me a part of this family. I owe her everything. Carlo Agretti... he fought her at every turn. There is nothing he would not have done to win control of Falcon Crest." Cole: "I did it all along because he would not let me prove to Melissa how much I loved her — and she was carrying my child."

Yeah I was afraid of that this stupid story would cause Summer to regress a bit. It would be more understandable if she still thought Phyllis was dead.

Lynda Hirsch's Column Cancelled After 45 years
Wow the end of an era. Who was even still carrying Ms. Hirsch’s column in 2023 though? The worst for me when it came to bizarre and/or factual errors back in the day Candice Haven’s syndicated column including misreporting on Kale Browne’s firing (she said he decided to quit when all the soap rags said he was fired lol).
